Even though Best is definitely going to fall into the giant glowing pit of destruction, it’s going to be just fine when our heroes realize that the REAL Payet Best was in their hearts all along.
You know. I been thinking about it..and besides Byron’s rage…he’d make a real good paladin.
He’s this nice guy who tries to solve problems noneviolently. He tries to help others, and keeps everyone in mind.
Heck he even knows his badside and tries to surpress it [ He could just let go, become a loner, reave and gain ,oney.].
Anyone else think Byron would be a good paladin? That tragic past part would make him even better crusading against the horrible stuff he wants others not to experience
I think he might, but I don’t see Byron as the type to let anyone else take flak for his actions, even a deity. Personally just think he is too self reliant for it.
Well think in modern [ whatever newest dnd setting] paladins don’t need a deity. They can work for a goal or a overall belief.
Paladins in Warcraft fight for the Light [humans ] so figured. And he dosen’t have to relying on someone anyways.
Paladins can come across as self reliant. They put forward the image of being self sufficient so that others can do the same instead of looking for help. and makes the others better through example?
But again..love Byron…also..come on Byron x Frigg..or Bandit if she ever returns
Byron is willing to risk himself when the cards are on the table. In the hour of need he certainly steps up to the plate. He hasn’t really dedicated himself to self-sacrifice though. He’s a simple man with simple desires. A meal on the table, a roof over his head, a stiff drink at the end of a hard day’s work.
If it weren’t for his condition which makes a regular life impossible, he’d probably just be a standard businessman, worker, or tradesperson of some sort enjoying the quiet family life. Truth be told, at times it feels like that’s the greatest tragedy in his story. All these years later, he’s escaped the battlefield but the war still follows him wherever he goes.
I don’t really see him as the Paladin type. He doesn’t have some greater cause he serves. He’s just a regular Joe who knows right from wrong and has the will and courage to act in accordance with what’s right when others would falter. Incredibly admirable, but not a Paladin.
agreed. just because he is really Good doesnt make him a paladin. hell, most people refuse to play a Lawful Good character that isnt a paladin. which is a shame. paladins arent the only good force out there guys.
Mostly agreed as well although Byron does display some of that palladin-ish self-righteousness/arrogance in the 2nd panel. He might might make a decent paladin if he weren’t so zerk-prone.
Eh, they don’t have to but it is generally part of the image. Just like how mages often have a bit of snobbishness associated with them and thieves are supposed to be greedy compulsive liars.
It’s a part of the image that Byron fits quite nicely.
i disagree. i for one love to see characters break the mold rather than play a stereotype. it makes for much more interesting roleplay. I love seeing a paladin choosing good over law when forced to, and i really like to see them put up with a chaotic character and instead of striking him down and taking him to jail, they try to help them instead. my chmpaigns tend to be roleplay/story heavy though, so your mileage may vary. i prefer it to the gary gygax(RIP) KILL LOOT KILL LOOT philosophy. but i digress. to each his own.
Dude, of course I love seeing things break the mold. I would imagine that to be a common trait in readers of this comic.
That doesn’t mean refusing to acknowledge that there is a mold though. It’s precicely because we don’t usually expect rogues be chivalrous that it is pleasant, fun, and noteworthy when we get a Zevran.
I think we’re talking about two entirely different things now. Like I said, Paladin’s don’t have to be self-righteous or arrogant. They most certainly don’t have the stereotypical Paladin Ego trademarked or anything. Doesn’t mean that’s not something often associated with them.
Actully..I’d love to see breaking the mold in more then 1 way. I say…to show them evolve…get dual specs or multi-classing? I mean…it’d be interesting. And would be unique.
Byron Zerker + Monk / Paladin [ Focus and Rage with clarity and loyalty/protection]
Frigg Crusader + Zerker [ Opposite. Based on being angry and fighting..would be a excellent combination. Or strategist with her love of Chess]
Synj Tinker [ Think a Eberon Class ]+ Druid [ Thinking that shot about her being a princess..maybe she’ll grow more with nature..but still use technology..kind of a good blend and maturity in accepting both sides of her life]
Gravedust Shaman + [Actually I don’t know what to multiclass Grave as…needs more focus on his story.I’d think Ambassador…but..thats more profession less class ].
Bandit Thief + Illusionist [Thinking…she survived…and just hid herself with some last minute magics to keep herself alive…and it’d fit.She always seems more then one could think of.]
Best I’d like to see to never grow up and just crushed by reality…but thats me
That is a very nice assessment of Byron’s character, and I agree with it.
The few times I did play PnP D&D I played a neutral good fighter, but he tended towards lawful. Paladins in D&D never seem to characterized as the least bit humble, which is one reason I always preferred fighters.
Don’t know if you’ve noticed or not but he doesn’t need to be rescued all that often. It’s easier to stay composed when you’re swooping in to save the day than when you’re helplessly hoping for a second party to extend your mortal existence beyond the twenty seconds you have left.
He actually caused it by being a petulant whiny bitch, but either way I don’t think responsibility is really a concern for him right now. When you’re in that moment with the fight or flight instinct kicking in you don’t really maintain the high level brain functions used for ethics, philosophy, and the general blame game. Personally all I’ve ever been able to summon is thoughts like “Sweet Jesus I’m drowning! How do I make this stop? Somebody save me! This wanton flailing accomplishes nothing!”
Never occurred to me until after I’d gotten my feet on the ground again to get pissy about the life-guard’s inconveniently timed nap.
That pun sleeves me speechless. I’m just sew impressed. It seams I won’t ever be able to come up to your measure. But, I pleat with you, don’t let my groaning stop you. The gussets of laughter are worth the suffering :P
Come on… weave a few more puns for us…
Also, the tension is tearing me apart. What fate have been forged for our heroes? They should better brace themselves for it, lest they fall prey to the writers ripping fantasy.
Our heroes are definitely knot in stitches, this grave problem may just unwind the threads of fate that have woven them together. Our close knit men and women will be torn asunder, lest the writers cuff Best upside his pompous head. Leather or not they survive, I’m sure the story will continue on A-Crochet.
That was a sad day for the aliens. Every year, they hold a great mourning, complete with fireworks, so they can remember the explosion of the mother-ship, their defeat. They cradle their vengeful wrath, and they will return. Gods help us, when they do. Or at least Payet Best or Chuck Norris…
Time to wake up, Best.
or turn into the Joker to Byron’s Batman.
Heheheh, “tune” in.
The show was then canceled and Gravedust’s toy figure was left on the store shelf until a grubby collector purchased him
Heh heh.
Even though Best is definitely going to fall into the giant glowing pit of destruction, it’s going to be just fine when our heroes realize that the REAL Payet Best was in their hearts all along.
+1
So, cardioectemies all round then?
So why is Frigg the only one hauling?
It looks like Syr and Dust are reaching down to grab Byron and Best directly when they get close enough.
Better question. Why doesn’t he just grab the f’ing rope?
He already botched his Climb check, so the +5 to Climb the rope gave him isn’t going to do him any good.
Damn…
Hang on Byron! Best isn’t worth the guilt that dropping him would cause!
The Auld Grump, hmmm, random avatar, eh? let’s see….
That assignment was random?
I’m really beginning to think these “random” avatars are using some kind of appropriateness algorithm.
The fun part comes when the chapter ends and we add new avatars. Then everyone will spin the wheel!
Make that bitch turn.
You know. I been thinking about it..and besides Byron’s rage…he’d make a real good paladin.

Also like how he put himself at risk. No one else seemed to want to save Best
He’ll put himself in harm’s way to save someone he does not mesh with.
Byron is willing to risk himself when the cards are on the table. In the hour of need he certainly steps up to the plate. He hasn’t really dedicated himself to self-sacrifice though. He’s a simple man with simple desires. A meal on the table, a roof over his head, a stiff drink at the end of a hard day’s work.

another addition to that, paladins dont HAVE to be self righteous or arrogant, thats just how they are often portrayed. another shame.
Eh, they don’t have to but it is generally part of the image. Just like how mages often have a bit of snobbishness associated with them and thieves are supposed to be greedy compulsive liars.

Erk…must do better job of proofing before posting.
*…never seem to BE characterized…
Hed make a good samurai. They were very businesslike to begin with
Out for money and the occaisional good deed, all that bushido
Stuff came later
Correction. That’s more like a redeemed DK’s story than a paladin.
Worked for Cecil.
I like the reversal of expectations implicit in his being a berserker — that is, he’s desperately trying *not* to go berserk.
Also, it looked a lot to me like Frigg’s got some sort of paladin thing going on, which is another nice reversal of expectations.
Pffft. Like they’d kill off the main character. Best’ll be just fine. I pretty sure it’s about time for another sidekick to kick it, though.
Oh Yeah? Where’s Bandit? Not to mention that the entire party was dead before…
(Though I do agree that they wouldn’t kill someone again.)
“IS THIS THE END OF OUR HANDSOME HERO?”
Byron looks like he’s handling things just nicely.
Oh, you’re talking about Best? The way he keeps carrying on, he’s hardly heroic. Just really really lucky.
Don’t know if you’ve noticed or not but he doesn’t need to be rescued all that often. It’s easier to stay composed when you’re swooping in to save the day than when you’re helplessly hoping for a second party to extend your mortal existence beyond the twenty seconds you have left.
Particularly if you are the one who caused the mortal peril to begin with by being an arrogant, self-centered ass.
Best has skills, sure, but he’s still a whiny douche who I will probably always see as more of a liability than an asset.
He actually caused it by being a petulant whiny bitch, but either way I don’t think responsibility is really a concern for him right now. When you’re in that moment with the fight or flight instinct kicking in you don’t really maintain the high level brain functions used for ethics, philosophy, and the general blame game. Never occurred to me until after I’d gotten my feet on the ground again to get pissy about the life-guard’s inconveniently timed nap.
So he’ll fall into the vortex… and wake up floating in a glass tube?
I’m with you on this one. And I’m a bit surprised that no-one else has predicted this, to be honest.
Cheers,
Cote
So this is what Best saw in the basin, him dying like a little bitch.
Well, that tears it!
Looks like Best is slipping up
Hmm, I’m starting to fear the worst!
Think that he and Bandit will return as ghost or something?
And somewhere, a tailor just heard the siren song of a cash register…
You know…I think that tailor that made the jacket was fucking with Best.
Or just got fucked by him and decided to return the favor.
I’m surprised Best isn’t keeping his cool better. I guess it’s because his fate is in the hands of others and not his own.
Still, he should have tried to transfer to the rope instead of grabbing onto Byron’s hand like that.
I was thinking of the same thing. Since they have two unoccupied perfectly knotted rope, why not use it?
Damn, way to make things even more thrilling. I want the next page now! Why don’t you work, > button? Why??
By the way, the random avatar feature is awesome. I’m considering removing my gravatar just to see wich picture I would end up with.
It was said that day that Byron’s douchebag grew three sizes…and then he dropped Best.
I’m thinking this may be when Byron and Best find out just how deep the rabbit hole goes.
Now if only Best had dressed practically for dungeon-delving…
Well, this is new. Now Best is the hanger-on…
I could wish that everything goes fine.
But I honestly kind of wish that Frigg will lose her grip/stance/whatever, and fall in with Byron and Best…and topple Syr and Gravedust in with her…
One goes they ALL go. heheh.
For the glove of God, you’re tearing me apart!
*grin* Well, I have to hand it to you, Captain.
That pun sleeves me speechless. I’m just sew impressed. It seams I won’t ever be able to come up to your measure. But, I pleat with you, don’t let my groaning stop you. The gussets of laughter are worth the suffering :P
I think I just got served. :P
Don’t worry about it, Captain, Hawk’s just tailor-made for punnishment.
Come on… weave a few more puns for us…
Also, the tension is tearing me apart. What fate have been forged for our heroes? They should better brace themselves for it, lest they fall prey to the writers ripping fantasy.
I dunno, I feel like I have nothing to grab onto here. I fear I may be slipping.
The Heroes are fine, it is Best that looks to be in danger.
Byron’s not home free just yet. He’s kind of hanging by a thread right now.
The story continuing without the main characters? I’m a frayed knot – there’d be nothing to tie it together.
I’m LOVING Dusty’s expression in this.
Hey, look on the bright side, if Best dies maybe we can get Bandit back!
I forgot to wish everyone a happy “when Will Smith saved us from the aliens” day. Now it’s too frackin’ late.
That was a sad day for the aliens. Every year, they hold a great mourning, complete with fireworks, so they can remember the explosion of the mother-ship, their defeat. They cradle their vengeful wrath, and they will return. Gods help us, when they do. Or at least Payet Best or Chuck Norris…
stupid self fufilling basin, showing him this death so it could eat him by tricking him into smashing it and summoning this vortex
