The end still doens’t justify the means

And speaking of Horde (your refering to wow I take it?) the current Horde has proven (despite some acts of honour) to be little different from the old one, despite many preachings from that side. Even in vanilia the Horde had tons of evil quests (or as it’s members like to call it: “Grey area” :/), and in cataclysm it has become even worse.

What gets me most is that there are a lot of fans who still talk about the Horde being “the underdog”, “misunderstood”, or even the “honourable noble savages”.

However, while both the Allies and the Axis both had the same motives of winning, their methods were definately different.

Considering that Italy, Germany, and Japan are all still sovereign states rather than having been absorbed as territory by any of the Allied nations, I’d have to say that the Axis and Allies did not really both have the same motives for victory.

No, they had the same motives for victory, they just didn’t have the same motives for entrance to the war. Both sides wanted to defeat their rivals in order to survive, and hopefully also gain power. Many historians have also argued that territorial gain was an hoped-for objective of France (before they got plastered) and America. Britain simply wanted to retain foreign possesions. This was supported by such post-war acts as the creation of Nato and the Marshall plan, where, even though America could not gain actual land, they did gain considerable influence in previously neutral and hostile areas. Likewise, France’s return to French Indo-China after the war strongly suggests that they never gave up their ambitions to empire; they were merely delayed.

The reason why Britain was initially reluctant to enter the war (hence, different motive for entrance) was that they did not believe they cuold win. As Stanley Baldwin famously declared ‘the bomber must get through’. The German Airforce was considered superior to the British, and it was estimated that each day would see reports of 20,000 civilian casualties from bombing raids. The British knew they could not continue the war in those circumstances, and so felt that defeat was, if not inevitable, at least very likely. This was the reason for the policy of Appeasement. Appeasement failed because, as we know, Hitler wanted war (AJP Taylor disagrees, but his books have been trashed by generations of historians).

France wanted to attack Germany from the moment Germany started talking about Anschluss (and some historians suggest from the re-occupation of the Rhineland). However, France knew that war would not be feasible without British support. Since Britain didn’t have any problems with the Anschluss, France was forced to go along with it. France was especially keen to fight over Czechoslovakia, since it the lynchpin of France’s eastern containment strategy for Germany (essentally the same plan as for World War One, but replacing Russia with all the tiny little states formed by the Versailles treaty). Britain still said no. Thus, the different entrance motivation for France was that Britain wouldn’t let them. If Britain had been supportive of war, France was quite willing to invade and attempt to sever the entire Rhineland from Germany, and probably also East Prussia.

The United States wanted to stay out so that they could sell weapons to both sides (again), but Japan said no.

Interestingly, the only group that truly wanted no part of the conflict was the USSR. However, Stalin was realistic enough to know that Hitler would inevitably invade, and it was simply a matter of gaining time to prepare (hence the non-aggression pact).

So, in truth, all sides wanted the same things from war: Profit, Territory, Power, Survival. It was simply a choice of when to enter, and in what circumstances, that they differed.

None of this changes the fact that Germany, Italy, and Japan conducted the war in truly horrific ways, and, being a westerner I am therefore quite glad that the Allies won. However, the motivations were not different.

No offense, but are you some kind of fellow traveller? It’s incredibly naive of you to ignore the degree to which the Soviets played the French Front Populaire, the annexation of the Baltic states which was engineered by the Soviets in the 1930s culminating in the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, and let’s not forget, the completely unprovoked attack on Finland in 1939. If all of that’s not empire-building, I don’t know what is.

Given that he said, “So, in truth, all sides wanted the same things from war: Profit, Territory, Power, Survival”, and explicitly included the USSR in the analysis, I don’t think he’s giving the USSR a pass. The point was that the USSR didn’t want to enter the war, because they knew it would go badly for them.

There’s a lot more to say about the motives of any of the participants. suffice to say for this discussion, that none of the big players were innocent.

Precisely. I don’t deny that the Soviets were empire-building. It’s really quite clear that they wanted an empire. However, they didn’t want to be in the war because they figured it’d hurt the empire.

Fair enough. But I believe, based on the Soviets’ political maneuverings and army deployments, that the plan wasn’t so much to not participate in the war as to try to get the Germans and Western Allies to do as much damage to each other as possible first so the Soviets could swoop in and conquer the whole lot. For some reason the Bolsheviks had always believed that Germany was THE place to have a communist revolution–almost the first thing Lenin did after winning the Russian Civil War was to try to start one in Germany.

The reason for wanting a revolution in Germnay was because it was nearby, and too big to easily conquer. The Balkans they could take by themselves (as long as no-one else got involved), and the same was true for Poland and the Ukraine. Germany, especially once it was unified (thankyou, Bismarck!) was too strong for them to want to attack head-on, and such an attack would inevitably have triggered outside intervention. However, if they could trigger a revolution, then the Soviet Union would be able to stretch from the Pacific to the borders of France, and would have access to the North Sea (and thus the North Atlantic), the Pacific Ocean, and the Mediterranean. They would also be militarily and economically so strong that they could basically just laugh at the rest of the world. Remember, Germany fought three imperial powers (England, France, Italy) to a standstill all by itself in World War One, while Austria-Hungary dealt with Russia. Only when America got involved did things get a bit more ugly. Germany, Austria, and Russia would be nigh-on unstoppable.

Yeah, those are probably the nostalgic Pre-WoW fans..since nothing the Horde has done since that game makes sense with their character in previous games. Hell, Thrall ain’t even in the Horde anymore, is he?

As for “this” Horde? I can’t really say either side is good or even neutral. We have yet to have any real information on them that doesn’t come from a Gastonian. All the elves seem relatively bastardy for different reasons but none in a flat-out dangerous way. What it comes down to is Harki fought the main characters..so he’s the opposite of a protagonist. A Contagonist, if you will.

I think Harki’s a bit too restrained. He should embrace the sweet, cold grip of omni-genocidal nihilism and destroy EVERYTHING. But NOOOO, he has to have “heroic motives”.

I’m going to be so happy when Nega-Best arises from the void and uses his newly-gained dark powers to sunder all existence. So happy. Hopefully he even does so while cracking one-liners and laughing madly. Those are the BEST villains.

This is not the first time a troll has trolled. Homestuck has done it, the classic “Troll under the bridge” did it all the time, and it’s probably been done to death in mythology… Hell, we’re not even getting into the film “Troll 2”, which is hardly even connected to the first film, thus having forced fans of the first to sit through a bad film that had nothing to do with the original.

Yeah. Trollception seems to happen a lot these days.

Don’t insult it like that. By which I mean insult Troll 1. It was literally not connected at all. It was a movie called “Goblin” that was re-titled for America so that people might buy it thinking it was a real sequel. That’s it. It wasn’t even published by the same distribution company.

Her limbs were always vaguely attached – it wasn’t a complete trifurcation – so the troll blood could still work. You just have to treat them as really ridiculously large cuts, which is why Harki’s torso no longer resembles a broken sieve.

Though the path of war yields no roses until many seasons after the deaths of your enemies nourish the path, the dog of battle sometimes leaves a turd of loss on the path of war that you step into with your boots of purpose.

Brian Blessed’s voice is far too boisterous for the hawkman’s quiet commentary in this scene. Then again, I can’t claim to have seen all of Brian’s roles.

It’s fun to say: Brian Blessed. I hear if you say it three times, he appears behind you and shouts loudly.

Also, I was going to say how I hear Hawk-Guy completely differently, but, damn it, now I read his lines in a Sean Connery voice. Thanks a lot, Garygolf.

His tendons were cut, so he fell. I think, that it reaffirmed him in his belief, that he is not meant to kneel before others.
