Yalaria – much as I pity her for empathic/ethical reasons – is purely misdirection. She’s a sideshow to keep the cattle from noticing how many of them are dying for their government’s war. It’s a fairly standard tactic for any government in a time of war. I think they call it ‘maintaining morale.’
