Penk will either horribly regret this decision… or make the best friend he’ll ever find.

Time for Penk to cut his teeth. Hopefully his jawing off won’t come back to bite him in the ass.

It’s possible he’s bitten off more than he can chew, but I feel confident that soon he and HAMERHEAD will be chewing the fat like old chums. Of course, asking HAMMERHEAD to lend an ear might be unwise. They probably shouldn’t play cards or pool, either.

    Penk’s got guts.

But not for long if he doesn’t get out of Hammerhead’s range quickly.

    They’re HAMMERHEAD and Penk
    Yes, HAMMERHEAD and Penk
    One is a drummer
    The other’s like a tank
A land shark and a troll
    Out for Arkerra’s soul
They’re HAMMER, they’re HAMMERHEAD and Penk

I like how HAMMERHEAD’s name is written in allcaps, like MONOCULUS! minus the exclamation.

In other panels he was compared to other Land Sharks. Due to their hunched-over posture, Land Sharks are surprisingly short. Compared to the tall Harky, of course he would look a bit shorter.

Yeah, but his hands were big enough to wrap around an entire normal-sized land shark and squeeze. And unless those deer were really tiny, that means his hands are pretty big (and look big on this page as well)

I should clarify though… I stated last page I wasn’t sure hammerhead could be the champion shark because that guy’s hand looked much smaller, about the same size as the rest of the hands on the chapter cover page. Whereas his should be notable larger. Of course, the chapter isn’t done, or mabe decisions have been made during the cover.

Wow… All this writing out makes it look like I care much, much more about this then I actually do.

He was compared to other land sharks before. Land sharks are actually kind of short compared to a troll as tall as Harky.

I think it’s a case of when one shouts something the others either shout it as well (like a shark feeding frenzy) or just kill the guy that shouted.
So when Hammerhead shouts something the others don’t have many options, they just shout as well as they can’t take him down.

Best referenced a hive-mind back in Chapter 9, ep 10. But the alt-text there suggested that they just think the same thing because the sharks have five or six thoughts to choose from.

With all due respect to those who are concerned for Penk speaking so boldly: I think you underestimate Hammerhead. Perhaps Hammerhead may have misunderstood his brothers, but he’s not just above mindless but wise enough to see the limitations of his people. If so, he may be wise enough to admit his error and respect what Penk said. Ripping Penk limb from limb will not make him better than his brothers whom he sees as mindless.

Similarly, you may also underestimate Penk. Perhaps he sees this and that’s why he spoke out so bravely.

Or perhaps Penk was just being rash in his honesty. But if Hammerhead spares and even respects Penk for his frank truth-speaking, then Penk got lucky and I find being lucky worthy of its own respect.

I don’t know, I think you might be overestimating Hammerhead.
He clearly doesn’t have a strong enough command over his idiot brothers that they don’t try and do what they tried to do in the previous comic (“You’re not strong! Raargh!”) and he didn’t really have any compulsion against eating them for it.

The average landshark is not very bright and works mainly on impulse, not reason. When HAMMERHEAD told his brethren to move aside, they immediately jumped to “challenge of strength – FIGHT!” They paid for their mistake, but they couldn’t really help it: they’re not really capable of thinking ahead on a regular basis. HAMMERHEAD knows this, and so knows there’s really no point in attempting to command them, as they’ll just do whatever flies to mind first, regardless of whether or not they’ve learned before that half of their choices are bad ideas.

That said, if we are to assume that HAMMERHEAD is to become one of the world’s champions, he’s going to need some kind of successor to take his place governing the Land Sharks.

I predict that the next storyline within this recruiting-the-World’s-champions storyline will be HAMMERHEAD establishing a system of government amongst the Land Sharks, to replace him while he’s out championing.

If you look at the last page you’ll see his eyes aren’t on the sides but facing foward. So he shouldn’t have a blindspot in front of him.

Depending on how similar to actual sharks Land Sharks are, HAMMERHEAD might not even need to see Harky to know where he is – he’d be able to sense it by the electrical activity of Harky’s nervous system. In hammerhead sharks, this sense is keener than in others squaliforms – some hammerheads can detect prey buried under dirt and mud this way.

Of course, air is less of an effective conductor of electricity than water, so HAMMERHEAD might have to rely on other senses. Like sensing the pressure changes in the air caused by Harky’s presence and/or movement – sharks can sense movement this way in water.

Again, assuming land sharks have a similar range of senses that actual sharks do… :)

Actually, it just occurred to me… the hivemind of sharks could be based on that. I was going with pheromones like insects, but if their senses are equivalent, that’d make more sense. They “see” each others impulses via bioelectrical sensitivity and get caught up in each others moods. That’s why proximity is important.
