Depending on the edition. In fourth ypu can e a paladin or blackguard of any god, and dark doesnt necessarily mean evil. Sometimes a good god might need someone to do something obviously evil to cause something great to happen(doing the wrong thing for the best reasons). The god won’t have one of its pure followers do this, that could corrupt them. That god will have followers specifically used as a sort of “hitman” or assassing group, and these are avengers or black guards. Ofcourse this is flipflopped for the evil gods, but the evil gods don’t use paladins to do good things, they are used as healers in their armies.
And this is the kind of Bullshit (well this and many other things) that make me ignore the 4th edition all together. Seriously, good gods that use Assasin groups?
Dark gods that use Paladins as healers? (heeellloo? ever heard of Dark-clerics?)
the first is just to modern thinking and unrealistic(Seriously that just make the “good” gods Hypocrits) ,the latter is just…..dumb.
Sorrry i would like to phrase that nicer but i just cant.
Anyway. He may have the best interests for his folks but he thinks his goals can only be obtained through brute Force and War and that he is right to do so . Hence he made a Pact with a Dark god. Yeah Lawful-evil Blackguard i would say.
Same sort of crap EQ2 pulled when they decided to make good Assassins and evil Rangers (and the other classes that used to be good/evil being made neutral)
actually in dragon lance , the gods of choas used lord Soth to usher in the cataclism and the good good used Raistlen when he was a “black” magic user and served under hes dark cleric master, to change the path of the traveling forest from consuming everything including their lands to becoming a movable wall around the towers of magic.
in both cases the gods were the “pure” good and “pure” evil at work using less then normal vassals for their plans.
“the first is just to modern thinking and unrealistic(Seriously that just make the “good” gods Hypocrits)”
Oh really ? Just because you’re good doesn’t mean you are naive.
Plus, if Good Gods were not to use assassins, then no good country, no democracy would need special forces units to do some unsavoury job that still needs to be done.
Even in the real world with the Christian religion, a good God still uses killers. In the scripture, all things came from God & that even includes Satan; recall that Satan IS still one of God’s Angels, but he’s a Fallen One.
All of God’s Angels do God’s bidding, in one way or another. Satan spreads evil only because God still allows him to; do you think he could if it was against God’s will? Nope, God could unmake Satan, just as He made him.
Another of God’s Angels is known as the Avenger; the one who smites at God’s command such as the first-born sons of Egypt, even as Moses was there to lead the Hebrews out of there.
Yeah, there’s plenty of room for good deities to do bad things…They operate on a level that mere mortals can’t understand & they don’t fit into the “moral codes” of mere mortals.
I would say more Barbarian if we are going 4th Edition. They focus on Strength, Constituion and Charisma and actually channel primal spirits to power their rages according to the book.
On another note- DAMN. Who among the Peace Makers can directly stand up to Hammerhead should both they and the Champions go face-to-face and head-to-head? He crushed three of his brothers at the same time with ease. Frigg comes to mind as the only one with the raw might to match him, but hers is not a reliable power nor has Frigg shown herself as using it… tactically. :-(
Yeah, he’s clearly the anti-frigg. He’s the bruiser of the team and a bit of a loner, but armorless, smart and contemplative, and little to no apparent interest in getting laid.
This giant chunk of cartilaginous man-fish could be right up Frigg’s alley – she got all misty-eyed over remembrances of a half-ogre, after all. We’ll see if a few rounds head to head don’t stir some hot instincts in the two. Diplomacy ala Byron and Syr’nj – gunboat diplomacy in this case…
Yeah but you know how this kind of nemesis fights usually are?
You -expect- that similiar oppenents will fight each other and suddenly its all mixed up.
So i bet its Syr fighting hammerhead with her science and probatly winning since brains over brawns and yada yada yada………Like i said, that would be typical. Thought i would be glad to be wrong here.
Also i wonder who will be the Anti-bandit in the champions team?
Brag obviously. The guy was tossed out a mountain and got back up to carry his friend to get medical attention. He also got back up after Frigg KA-SMITED his out of his boots. And the man hunted down Gryphons and such with his bare hands no less.
I’m so confused!! I thought we were supposed to be rooting for the people who looked like us -I mean the heroes!! How dare you develop both sides of a conflict to highlight how there are no one-dimensional villains in real life!
I think up until now Penk wasn’t officially one of the Champions. (I haven’t been able find where it was announced). But if he wasn’t, he just made it by acclaim, and Harky is about to burst with pride.
Now, who do you think the Champions will appoint as their speaker to the leadership council? I would love to hear Iver’s and Don Gobligno’s responses if Champions they appointed Hammerhead, but I think we all expect it will be Magda, she is the only one with the patience needed to deal with politicians.
He’s still not one of the champions… and neither is Hammerhead yet. Harky *just* finished saying that only he and the avian leader had the authority to appoint people as champions. Harky hadn’t actually invited Hammerhead to be a champion.
I suspect Penk is about to get told off and then eaten for vastly overstepping his authority.
Yeeaah…Locke you’re not so great at this reading comprehension thing, assuming you’re not being ironic.
The whole reason Harky here in the first place is in search of a Champion from the land sharks. Penk just persuaded the obvious candidate to take the role FOR Harky. All he did was save Harky some verbal sparring, and maybe literal sparring.
As for procedural quibbling, strictly speaking Penk only encouraged Hammerhead to volunteer as a champion. He’s not claiming the right to confirm the appointment.
Background of final panel:
HEY OUR BIG GUY IS GRABBING THE LITTLE GUY
HEY THE LITTLE GUY DIDN’T DIE JUST NOW
HEY MUST BE A SMART THING
HEY YEAH OUR BIG GUY IS A SMART GUY
HEY YOU GUYS ARE MISSING THE MEAT
MEAT! MEAT MEAT MEAT
Just been re-reading page 15 and 16 of this chapter.
What we see in today’s page is the direct result of Harky discussion with Gondolessa.
From page 16, “Search a champion among the most unhinged of our coalition”. So let’s visit the landsharks.
From page 15, “Haven’t you be pruning the feathers of a potential successor” “Not to his knowledge” and page 16 again “take the boy with you”. Hence today’s panel 3 “Atta boy. He will do.”
The best proof of trust a mentor can show is to let his pupil take risks. Harky is a great mentor.
he literally just said he had to stay there to keep them from eating eachother and their allies(so he can’t join a council 4 tents over),but now hes leaving?
Kid’s got moxie!
Well, he IS a bard apprenticing to a paladin. He’s gotta have a high charisma.
paladin or invoker?
Let’s go with Paladin. Invoker’s don’t have Charisma as one of their main stats :)
Naaaa i go with Blackguard. Anti-paladins are always way better. And i think it fits him well as a servant of a rather dark god.
Dark really seems to be the only kind of god the setting offers.

Why can’t Harky just be a Barbarian who Elite-classed into Divine Champion with decent Charisma O.o?
Even in the real world with the Christian religion, a good God still uses killers. In the scripture, all things came from God & that even includes Satan; recall that Satan IS still one of God’s Angels, but he’s a Fallen One.

…And he’s still got both hands!
That’s…that is boss.
I could probably have said something better, but that’s all I got now.
Atta boy.
Damn!
And thus does Hammerhead prove his wisdom and Penk prove his potential. :-)
more like his scrotal capacity, thats a three ton land shark dammit!
On another note- DAMN. Who among the Peace Makers can directly stand up to Hammerhead should both they and the Champions go face-to-face and head-to-head? They’ll never go face to face.
The Champions and the Peace Makers will ally in common cause against crazy psycho-invaders from Sepia World.
Oh, they have to go at least once. ;)
Ya, but Frigg yells loudest. :P
…Oh my god, Hammerhead will become smitten for Frigg, thus solving Frigg’s…
I’m not sure if I want that idea to manifest.
Yeah, he’s clearly the anti-frigg. He’s the bruiser of the team and a bit of a loner, but armorless, smart and contemplative, and little to no apparent interest in getting laid.

Frigg, or Byron if he looses it as he’s shown to be rediculosuly strong when bezerking
or bandit – strenght’s worthless if you can’t hit your target
Yeah but you know how this kind of nemesis fights usually are?

I’m actually not certain that Hammerhead will be the champion. He’s more of a leader than a Champion. More of a Harky than a Penk.
Looks like Penk is Hammerhead’s new best “chum”.
heh, i see what you did there;) so chunky you can carve it XD
Turns out Harky didn’t just bring him here to be bait.
Damn right, when under pressure, penk is far less of a worm than that lady-troll believes.
I’m so confused!! I thought we were supposed to be rooting for the people who looked like us -I mean the heroes!! How dare you develop both sides of a conflict to highlight how there are no one-dimensional villains in real life!
Weeeelllll, i have always rooted for team monster. And the only real Villains were the human-politicans here for me :D
I love how proud Harky looks in panel 3.
He just looks quizzical to me. Like “Well, he’s probably gonna get eaten, but I guess I should let him finish talking just in case?”
Whoo! Go Penk!
“Now could you let go of my hand? I’m pretty sure you just replaced the bones with a fine dust.
He’ll just regenerate. Not a problem.
He has cahones of titanium. I do believe that none can deny that.
It’s a fantasy setting. Boy’s got a set of mighty mithril ones.
I almost missed the bullets he was sweating in panel 2. (Not a criticism–that just means he’s paying attention.)
Couldn’t be more proud.
I think up until now Penk wasn’t officially one of the Champions. (I haven’t been able find where it was announced). But if he wasn’t, he just made it by acclaim, and Harky is about to burst with pride.

“-DEVOUR YOU,” finished HAMMERHEAD, as he scooped the young troll into his mouth, swallowing him whole.

Last panel: *CRUNCH*
“Aaahhh, my hand! My drumming hand! I’ll never drum again!”
It looks an awful lot like the landsharks have reduced their own numbers by about 50% while this conversation was going on.
I THINK they were just all fighting over the 3 Hammerhead killed.
Am I the only one hoping for a Turk-and-JD-style bromance between HAMMERHEAD and Penk? Guy love, between two guys?
“you, sir, have found the saltine!”
“We’re gonna breeaak knights! We’re gonna eaaat ’em right!”
…and Hammerhead’s teeth grew three sizes that day.
…and did Penk’s hand regrow by next morning.
Looking at the background whets my appetite.
“I… I am, Hammerhead.”
“No, I am Hammerhead.”
“No, I’m saying I am, Hammerhead.”
“No, I HAMMERHEAD!”
“No, you don’t underesta-”
“NO, YOU NOT UNDERSTAND, I AM HAMMERHEAD!”
*Chop*
Penk. Harky. Family resemblance?
Trolls
Thas raycess!
But Harky does have that look a parent gets when their child does well, he almost looks like he could cry.
I wondered that myself.
That is a proud face (panel 3), or at least it seems to me.
I love the landsharks. ‘Nuff said.
I love…carpet.
Better prepare your carpet cleaner for after the landsharks are done there.
Just been re-reading page 15 and 16 of this chapter.

*stands up and claps* BRAVO!!
*looks around, realizes she’s standing in her living room and her three kids are staring at her in puzzlement, sheepishly sits back down…*
The more I see “The World’s Rebellion” the more I like them, is that odd?
That’s not odd.
That’s quality writing.
*smirks fondly and takes off fedora, holding it to my chest*
he literally just said he had to stay there to keep them from eating eachother and their allies(so he can’t join a council 4 tents over),but now hes leaving?
