A lot of talk about choice coming from the one character who doesn’t seem to have any.
Isn’t that what he just said though?

Ayup. ‘I didn’t choose the
thugavatar life, thethugavatar life chose me.’But He did choose to leap nose first into a volcano.
Yeah, I’d say he pretty clearly and intentionally chose this life. He may not have realized just exactly what he was getting into, but that’s on him.
He might have chosen to go through with it, but he did not choose the course laid out before him. His destiny has long been decided by people other than him (chiefly Harky), and the only choice he had in the matter was “rise to the occasion” or “let your people down.”
He chose to give up choice.
What does it say that Penk needs a mask in order to face his duties?
It’s called a helmet. And, as per the discussion he had with Auraugu, the mask isn’t to hide, but to show.
…It says he’s the hero that Arkerra deserves, but not the hero it needs?
I’m pretty sure that Auraugu is commenting on the role, not the helmet.

None of the Champions, save Magda (the other devotee of Tectonicus) are.
And I certainly can’t say I blame them.

Magda and Penk’s buddy Auraugu, but he seems more happy he gets to fight alongside Penk rather than impressed that he did it….
Even Auraugu, champion of the fuzzy races who has a perpetual grin (complete with “^ ^”) in his face does his best attempt at frowning.
Or Rana, who’s just doing the “oh, those must be the truck nuts of the team” face.
What about Hammerhead, he’s gonna check if he can really hold his claim of being the loudest… or just checking if that armor won’t get in the way of sampling what’s, in “everything is prey” terms, an everlasting gobstopper?
All they see is a kid in a weird costume.
Wearing what increasingly appears to be a Tectonicus-Face helmet.
And, we finally see why Tectonicus had to have such huge nostrils. xD
A costume that’s about two sizes too big. I really hope he lives long enough to grow into it.

Is Magda a little sweet on Penk? Or is that just a “gosh, thanks new boss!” posture?
Well, he’s basically the fist of her god in the flesh, so, a healthy mixture of admiration and fealty.
She wants to be fisted by her god?
Considering it’s Tectonicus, that couldn’t ever be anything but hot.
She doesn’t really bear Tectonicus any fondness though. She still believes in the ways of the Savasi Mystics, but has forged a begrudging alliance with the god of the trolls in order to be the warrior her people need her to be right now.
Considering both Penk and Harky, it seems this is a mindset that Tectonicus values. She is presumably a more valuable servant to Tectonicus because she’s willing to put aside her personal beliefs to serve her people (and in doing so, the trolls) rather than a less valuable servant for having loyalties outside of Tectonicus.
The colors are so bright. We got the three primary colors nice and bright: the blur ranger, the yellow ranger and the red ranger.

Healing only matters if you get hurt. You can’t get hurt if you kill your opponent before they can fight.
Even Rambo kept a needle & thread inside the handle of his combat knife though that’s definitely a badass method of “healing”.

Is it just me or are they a sentai team? Only problem is the dwarf isn’t in pink and the shark isn’t in green. But we’ve got Yellow, Blue, Black, and Red as the leader . . .
Just about. The tradition sentai is five, taking the positions of Lantern (Leader), Fist (Warrior), Leaf (Scout), Mirror (Mystic), and Pillar (Support), but adding an extra sixth now and then is not out of the question.

It is hard enough to visualize Tectonicus with the nostrils in fiery form. They look like eyes, but they are in fact the nostrils.
Then you go and make the nostrils the eyes on the helmet…

Actually, I don’t even view that as nostrils on tectonious. He obviously has two large eyes, and a number of smaller eyes, like some spiders do.
I think this was concerned back in the comment section when Harki nearly died and Tectonicus spoke to him.
It makes perfect sense, to me. Everyone knows you get eye-boogers, when you’ve got Penk-eye.

I quite dislike how bright Penk’s armor is, it’s a bit of an eyesore.
I think our esteemed artists may have chosen such, um, ostentatious armor for Penk because they knew it wouldn’t suit him. Our troll-bard still has to choose his true mask, which will probably result in him throwing off the Tectonicus mask.
Well, I may be in the minority here, but I think the armor looks better in the light, so to speak. Not exactly my favorite, but better than it looked last page. It has promise. ;D
