Don’t confuse the superclass ‘NPC’ with the subclasses ‘Mook’, ‘Boss’, ‘Plot-point Death’ and ‘Bystander in a GTA-style game’ (whether this last is simply a subclass of Mook is controversial).

Subclass ‘Quest-giver’ is usually indestructible, and subclass ‘World-filler’ (the most numerous class) is, even if not indestructible, a non-tempting target for PCs who aren’t playing psychopaths, and rarely a viable target for the Boss and Mook subclasses, who generally go for PCs and Plot-point Deaths.

I believe you mistake Auraugu’s role in combat. To my mind the champion of the fuzzy peoples is a skirmisher, thus his primary role is to engage the enemy until big guns arrive and avoid dying. He has been performing both tasks formidably and there is a reason why he was included in the champions’ team. Hyes.

He also seems like a commando: a lightly-armored mobile threat that works best behind enemy lines; destroying supplies and key personnel. Considering some of his previous deployments (the beach attack, the retrieval of the Graia’s Bough) his timing here is a case of best positioning for him, wiping out key enemy leaders behind enemy lines while others (Penk, Hammerhead) occupy enemy attention.

Depending on what the gods of plot require, the Champion of the Fuzzy peoples could be in to cause massively tactical casualties. Or a swift Ardaric-owning.

You know bringing up a point a couple of comics ago about who’s good and evil but even as entertaining as the fuzzy Champion and all , they definitely lean more towards badguys then good. They may have reasons but culture is much worse. Comparison

Humans – Gastonaisn mainly. Expansionistic, somewhat racist, close minded, but generally not too horrid. They did/do have slave rings and all, but don’t seem to WANT to fight people. Pulled inot war by World Rebellion

Gnomes – Serving the humans, somewhat second class citizens, but still own place, and seemingly happy where they at. Don’t seem much racist towards them and funding for their projects, even if war.

Sky Elves – Isolationist Race. Kept to themselves. Haughty, but diddn’t seem to bother people. Forgot why they joinned the New Alliance. Jerks, but don’t think attacked others. Pulled into war by World Rebellion

Wood Elves – Also Isolationist.Kept to themselves, but generally decent people. Least from what is seen. Attacked by the World Rebellion and joinned en mass with Gastonia.

So pretty much on Alliance side Gastonians/ Humans the baddest guys. Save our heroes and their organization etc.

Now to look at the World Rebellion

Gnolls – Forgot if correct term, but whatever the Fuzzy people are. They are probabbly the worst . Unlike the others, They cause GENOCIDE on the cat people. They killed em straight up for their land and wiped them down to a man. Also from the story, apprently they did this to MULTIPLE races. That’s REALLY evil.Yes survival…but Genocide..hunting down people horrible.

Avians – Not much known, so they seem fine.

Trolls – The Main Bulwark of Rebellion. Don’t know too much, cept they worship god of death and destruction and fire. Also seem jerk tendencies (taking in fact when Penk was flirting with Troll girl, mentioned Troll women being jerks or some such?Or did they value blood/warfare?Forgot) So no idea but ah well.

Goblins – Materialistic, kind of like Gastonians mixed with Gnomes. With less morales it seems.

Land Sharks – Cannibals in mass, who are barely controled tendencies to not eat allies and foes alike. While amoral, from a humanoid standpoint, no one would be okay watching their loves ones/friends/allies being eaten by anyone. So can be considered also evil, but more genetics?

Dwarves – The most sympathetic of the Rebellion Races.Lost their land to humans, and the reason they fight the most well understood . Leader is a scumbag, but the rank and file probabbly want their land back and such.So they would probabbly be the good ugys on Rebellion.

Now taking into account both sides..just..anything that has people who commit Genocide seems really horrid.Genocide and cannibals. So while the heroes on both sides okay, they do represent overall factions. If Alliance wins..probabbly more land loss, defanging the Rebellion…stuff like that.

But hwat happens if Rebellion winss? From Penk’s discussion and the general Land sharks and fuzzy People…it’s doubtful anyone would be left, no?

The Sky Elves joined up to keep from becoming irrelevant in the rapidly-advancing world stage. Their magic would only take them so far when emergent technology was becoming increasingly capable of replicating even their most grand spells. There was also, apparently, a food shortage that they had to deal with, given that their only alternative was conjuration, which was basically thievery.

The Land Sharks I can’t really call evil. They’re terrible, of course, but with the exception of HAMMERHEAD I struggle to even call them sapient. It’s like if you took Dug from Up and made him really, really violent, then cloned him a couple thousand times over.

While the Gnolls are unmistakably villainous in their culture, it’s difficult to describe them as particularly menacing. Though they wiped out the other Fuzzy Peoples, it’s been made clear both in their words and in their narrative presence that theirs is a path of survival at any cost. Said narrative presence is virtually nonexistent, in fact, aside from Auraugu and Arfa – the latter of whom was seemingly introduced primarily to remind us that Gnolls were in fact a thing. Judging by this and the usual racial composition of Savage Race background characters (vast majority Troll, smattering of other races), the Gnolls may in fact be even more endangered than the Savasi.

Which of course is the theme tying the Savage Races together. They have piss and table scraps for land and resources, and have been pushed to the point where they will do anything to secure themselves a home and a land worth living in.

Thereby tying in nicely with the existing abundance of Alliance/Horde parallels.

They _say_ they have “piss and table scraps” for land and resources, but I don’t think we’ve seen any maps or other evidence to support that. Could just as well be propaganda.

      Don’t forget:
-The Trolls – and now, the WR – practice racial slavery (Orcs)
-The WR (Harky) led our guildies into a death pit when they came in as diplomats
-Now dogface is attacking a M*A*S*H unit.
Yes, both sides are ugly, and both deserve some sympathies. I know where mine lie right now.

The gnolls committed genocide because the badlands in which the Fuzzy Peoples lived only had enough resources to support one civilization. It was either kill the other fuzzy races or suffer and die with them.

The point is that it’s a vicious cycle. Any chance of the Savage Races improving culturally is negated by the wanton imperialism of Gastonia. A culture in a defensive crouch trends heavily towards conservatism/traditionalism and wholesale rejection of any and all cultural precepts of the invader.

One thing to watch out for in analyzing a conflict is that the dominant power can easily portray its domination as legitimate, and define peace as the uninterrupted continuation of its domination. So, using violence to suppress rebellion is “maintaining the peace”, making it relatively easy for a dominant power to portray rebels as villainous, and to blame for all violence that occurs.

On top of that, of course, the dominant power enjoys the material fruits of domination. So, just look at us! We’re civilized, and they’re barbarians! Which is to say, we’re rich, and they’re poor, which is why we’ve got the nice buildings and roads and so forth.

The upshot is that I think these two factions are balanced, in moral terms, but the Gastonians have been in the dominant position for some time, and so look better at a casual glance.

Dont be so quick to see romance. Ardaic is a servant of Gastonia first and foremost, and the alliance with the wood elves is crucial to gastonia’s survival in the face of the warhost bearing down. Syr’nj is literally the one holding that alliance together. she dies, and gastonia’s chances at survival are far, far darker.

at least, i think that’s Ardaic’s perception. the truth is, frankly, irrelevant in comparison right now. so do i see romance here? no. i see a similar need for her well-being, but its not enshrined in personal feeling.

I dunno. The ellipse was written meaning there was a dramatic pause intentionally, leaving personal feeling up for debate. As well, take into account what syr’nj said before the battle, the ‘nj girls tend to fall for men like their father. And the most emotionally closed male in this comic is Ardaic. I’m not sure if this was intentional, but the love triangle potential is there.

Er, the detour into Syr’Nj/Ardaic shipping is nice and all, but I was really referring to the black humor of a hospital where you have to declare whether the patient is expendable or not when they’re brought in.

And yeah, triage is definitely a thing, I just find this particular instance somewhat darkly humorous.

It strikes me that, thinking of this as an MMO, Ardaic has functioned as an archetypal quest-giver NPC — exactly the sort of NPC of whom fans will eventually complain, “Hey, you in the fancy armor, why don’t you ever go out and fight instead of asking us to do it all the time?”

Except it sounds like Ardaic is, in fact, about to go out and fight.

This is the sort of effect the five in tubes have, making the world come alive around them.

Although, admittedly, Auraugu always sounds like he’s giving a wrestling promo.

I think Ardaic is going to rip his shirt off Hulk Hogan style. He certainly has the mustache to pull it off.

He shall pin Auraugu’s fuzzy shoulders to the mat for the count of three, remove his mask and send him scurrying back to his Peoples with his tail ‘twixt his legs! WOOO YEAH!

The part of Miss Elizabeth shall be played by Sr’nj. Having already waylaid his Sweet Lady, the face shall have no choice but to upend the rampaging heel. This is how ‘rasslin works!

I was just waiting for this to happen again to point it out:

    Auraugu has some issues.

For someone allegedly “the champion of fuzzy peoples” (people isn’t plural enough?), a bona fide wrassler and supposedly the courage of the team… Aura is a little too fond of picking on women and weak nameless mooks.

Sure, in fuzzy’s defense, that shouldn’t sound that sexist by both he not being even human to start with, and with magic, hammershit and science being abundant, this shouldn’t be an issue.

But no. Everytime he’s wrasslin’, he’s either picking Unnamed Soldier #765, old farmer Anderson (okay, I’m making this one up, probably) or the heroines.

Well, let’s see how wasted he’ll get by facing a NAMED moustache bearer and a flora druid in a wooden cabin (druid locked in a cabin? Might as well lock MacGyver in a tool shed)

Peoples and people (as a plural) mean different things.

People is the plural of person.

Peoples is the plural of people, which is a singular noun – roughly synonymous with ‘nation’.

Who the other Fuzzy Peoples are is an open question, or maybe he’s only the champion of the Gnolls, but they’re not a united people, and the other peoples are other Gnoll tribes.

As to your point – some of the best fighters in Arkherra are female – Frigg, Rachel (and the other Sisters), Magda, Brunhilde, etc (and, let’s face it, Madam Arfa probably kicked serious amounts of ass in her youth) – and even the major women who aren’t serious asskickers – the Nj sisters, Bandit – can hold their own in a fight, even if it isn’t through sheer strength, so Auraugu fighting women is hardly picking on the weak. And unnamed mooks also make up the bulk of the characters Byron, Scip, Frigg, and pretty much every other character have fought. Every fighter goes through piles of mooks before they get to the boss fights. Ones who’ve only been shown fighting named characters included – we’ve just only been seeing them during the boss fights.

It’s my impression from Madam Arfa’s story that the gnolls committed genocide against all the other fuzzy peoples.

So the reason he’s the champion of the fuzzy peoples, rather than merely of the gnolls, is that all the other fuzzy peoples, and their champions (save Karmakat, maybe) are dead.

About the women and old people thing- he may in fact simply believe that they’re the toughest and strongest of his enemies. Remember, the head of his Matriarchal race is Lady Ardra, hyes? In Gnoll society, if you’ve lived long enough to get old, you’re a badass. If you’re a female, you’re automatically more dangerous than the males. He probably thinks that picking on the rank’n’file would be poor sport.

Dude… do you KNOW anything about Hyenas?! Gnolls, being hyenafolk, says a LOT about why he’d target the female members. Female hyenas are bigger, stronger, and possess more testosterone then the males!!

The female hyena’s clitoris is in fact bigger then the male’s genitalia. Females are, for this reason, the pack leaders of hyena, and therefore the gnolls… which makes the gnoll matriarch’s threats terrifying in retrospect…

He’s going for the one’s he thinks are strongest, the Women, because with his biology, gnoll women are almost CERTAINLY the stronger physically of the gender.

Plus, as a guy who plays unarmed fighters whenever possible, he probably went after Rachel because she’s another unarmed fighter… it’s always a test to see who’s the stronger of the unarmed.

I know Arkerra doesn’t have a Geneva, but they could sure use a few of their Conventions right now.

So any other Lucha fans out there who read this comic??

Any bets on whether Auraugu is a Rudo or a Technico?? I would guess he’s a Technico overall, both for his focus on high-flying maneuvers and his general heroic charisma.
