But a shadow is not the same thing as an object. He is merely a shadow of the form that is human. And the form of human is merely a shadow of…? I Am curious at what will happen when a shadow tries to exist where the light creating him comes from, but I’m gunna have to reread the idea of forms for any of this to make perfect sense.
HR just thought “the cave” to its logical conclusion, in my opinion, given what he knows and what has happened.
But, his train of thought shows some problems, the biggest, in my opinion, is: How does he know, where this plane lies, and where there are just more shadows of shadows of shadows of ad infinit shadows?
Or is it one of the points of the inevitable change of view, to determine this direction?
And to clarify, HR uses what I see as a rethorical question at the end of this panel, which implies, that he would already know this, or at least presumes to.
So he knows the “real world” is an illusion (hence why everything is monochrome), and the world of our heroes is the real one. I wonder when they’re going to unveil the third one.
Or to Amber. He would probably prefer to end up in Amber. I’m fairly certain that any human who ended up at the gates of Chaos Would be invited in as dinner.
So he started reading Plato with the Cave Allegory and then simply gave up?
Is he really 100% oblivious of Platonic Idealism and the Theory of Forms? Did he work for 30 years (in the entertainment industry!) just so he could come up with those on his own?
My guess? He knows the theory behind his work is not original, and he knows that Carol knows that, but he feels the need to explain himself to the readers.
He’s seriously cracking that fourth wall with all the expo.
my question is: is the camera rotating around him, or is mr. creepypants executing a slow spin while he talks?
ooh, even better, perhaps he’s executing an extremely fast spin, but the refresh rate of the panels makes it appear as though it’s a slow spin. HR stands for Helicopter Rotor, I’m sure of it!
At the time this was actually taking place? No. A swift intervention to the nuts could have done a lot of good. But in the current, non-flashback timeline? Yeah, you need other methods to deal with him now.
Most involve violence. At least the ones I would recommend.
He looks so earnest and happy in that last panel. For the first time, I can kind of see why Carol is caught up in his quest. Not that I think it’s a good idea.
Plato’s wall: if we’re looking at it we’re not only paralysed but sufficiently anaesthetised not be be able to detect our bodies or the space between us and the wall in any way. Escape doesn’t seem likely in such conditions.
Interestingly enough, the technique used to program nearly every video game these days, Object-Oriented Programming, reflects this Shadows of Shadows idea very neatly. Presumably Kingdoms of Arkerra was coded using this technique. Make of that what you will.
I wouldn’t call objects shadows of classes, and insofar as classes are related to reality at all I’d say they’re more ideals of reality than shadows of reality.
Maybe the programs are the objects and the reality we know is the shadows.
He has it all backwards of course.
In so far as what is a shadow and what is the object… the ideas are the reality and the objects made as an attempt to actualise those ideas are the shadows. They are a poor imitation of the idealised purpose-medium that the ideas were.
What does a CEO need with a starship?
A crew.
And an Orion Slave Girl
A crew of liberated Orion slave girls.
He needs the starship for a PR campaign. I think we can all agree he needs something to compensate for the shadows of ideas coming from his mouth.
What does anyone need from “shipping” stars?
Creepy CEO is creepy.
Also: “shadows” is pinging my Babylon 5-o-meter.
Babylon Five-o?
The second version was just nasty!!!!!!
So some creepy dude came to CEO Guy and asked him what he wanted, and that’s how they all ended up in this mess?
Anyone else have the urge to photoshop panel 3’s speech bubbles with “it was this big” jokes?
THERE WAS A FIRE-FIGHT!
‘Cause he was hung like this.
“So I’ve decided I’m gonna blow my company’s entire R&D budget on this quackery. You want in? It’ll be fun!”
Lol!
Well, hey!
The magic seems real enough, so it can’t all be quackery!
I’m with you, H.R. Let’s go flying off that slippery moral slope!
I feel like, for some religious groups, this sums up the garden of Eden.
I feel like H.R. took a dive into the deep end of the philosophy pool and never came up for air.
Oh, he came back up. Just he came back with the Bends.
H.R. is not just bent…He’s completely WARPED!
GOD created time so everything wouldn’t happen at once.
Grumpy Onry Dinosaurs?
I don’t think they have the power to do that.
By his own argument he’s already there – his shadow of a shadow is what’s stuck in this lower realm.
Also, why does reading webcomics require such an abundance of philosophical references? I’m looking at you, “Strong Female Protagonist”
If he wants to get out of the Shadow Realm, I know a lot of out-of-work Yugioh villains that could probably swing that . . .
You can’t spell megalomania without ‘HR’.
This is giving me unrealistic expectations of video game company CEOs.
All visionaries are!
This whole page is a flashback happening in Carol’s head. She’s thinking: “This is the point where I should have turned and run, and kept running …”
I have decided that from now on, in my mind, H.R.’s new name will be HR NutsNStuf
I’ve been wanting to do that for ages, but with different words. NutsNStuf seems more appropriate though.
Oh hey look, it’s the linchpin of existence. Let’s fuck with it.
sounds like fun, I’ll go get the kangaroos you get the sub ready….
“Lets go to the place where things become things and make them not things any more.”
It’s shadows all the way up.

So he knows the “real world” is an illusion (hence why everything is monochrome), and the world of our heroes is the real one. I wonder when they’re going to unveil the third one.
So H.R. is going to “the Courts of Chaos”
Or to Amber. He would probably prefer to end up in Amber. I’m fairly certain that any human who ended up at the gates of Chaos Would be invited in as dinner.
it’s okay if you want to go into the shadows, but make sure to take your pornstache with you.
Well. My video game concepts professor always said when you make games, you are god.
So he started reading Plato with the Cave Allegory and then simply gave up?
Is he really 100% oblivious of Platonic Idealism and the Theory of Forms? Did he work for 30 years (in the entertainment industry!) just so he could come up with those on his own?
Yeah that’s kinda my reaction here. Surely he realizes he’s mostly just restating Plato’s ideas here?
I guess it’s too late to suggest he seek professional help?
At the time this was actually taking place? No. A swift intervention to the nuts could have done a lot of good. But in the current, non-flashback timeline? Yeah, you need other methods to deal with him now.
Most involve violence. At least the ones I would recommend.
Oh, come on, HR has gotton so far, so at least let him finish it.
Also, to seek help, you need to know you are too insane to be safe for the public. And about that, I refer to a famous Seven quote.
Did anyone else see HR’s cameo in the latest X Men movie? Sure, Dinklage didn’t look exactly like him, but the resemblance was uncanny, says I.
He looks so earnest and happy in that last panel. For the first time, I can kind of see why Carol is caught up in his quest. Not that I think it’s a good idea.
Looks like someone’s been reading too much Chronicles of Narnia.
OMG… H.R.’s powers clearly now stem from… his mustache.
It speaks verbosely!
It is not a mustache, it is a mind controlling symbiotic alien that lives off mucous, soup dribbles, and CO2
Plato’s wall: if we’re looking at it we’re not only paralysed but sufficiently anaesthetised not be be able to detect our bodies or the space between us and the wall in any way. Escape doesn’t seem likely in such conditions.
‘Neath the trimmed growth, the lip still lurks.
Interestingly enough, the technique used to program nearly every video game these days, Object-Oriented Programming, reflects this Shadows of Shadows idea very neatly. Presumably Kingdoms of Arkerra was coded using this technique. Make of that what you will.

Maybe the programs are the objects and the reality we know is the shadows.
ya nerd! with your nerd hair!
seems like a serious leap of logic.
but he proved he was cray cray along time ago <.<
Dude you are so deep I can’t even see your shadow anymore.
He has it all backwards of course.
In so far as what is a shadow and what is the object… the ideas are the reality and the objects made as an attempt to actualise those ideas are the shadows. They are a poor imitation of the idealised purpose-medium that the ideas were.
I miss the Tie of Badass.
If we’re going to places that don’t exist, could we stop off in Equestria on the way? I’d like to visit.
