So, is this E-Merl’s player roleplaying being a stinking drunk and the player inadvertently giving the NPC a clue that people can come back to life in this game, despite it being a totally normal function of the MMO?

Or is this E-Merl the actual stinking drunk inadvertently giving the (unknownst to him) evil councilmember the secret that Syr’nj and co. know the secret to coming back from the dead?

I’d instead bet on it being E-Merl being automated offline, like Rachel was. (remembering that she woke up to her character being nonexistent, not that she was playing and then suddenly stopped having a character when she died in that one particular way.)

That still worries me. I feel like all my MMO characters are off having loads of fun and adventures while I am offline and all I make them do is farm materials and craft stuff.

Yes, but if Misa was the true mastermind, she’s not doing her job well. Her first attempt to assassinate/otherwise remove her brother from the picture failed (feigning ignorance when she let the pirates kidnap him and/or instigating the kidnapping) and she hasn’t made any move since. Either she’s got a VERY grand plot in the works, or is just about as dumb as the kids that climbed into the sack.

He does look much younger now, with less neck flab and wrinkles. Plus his jawline got more defined?
I know what this has to mean: Iwatani back then was from the future, and the one talking to E-Merl now is going to travel back in tme to before his plots backfired on him.

Stylistic changes, I think. There’s a rather distinct difference between Erica’s characterization and John’s. If you look at that page, Syr’Nj’s cheekbones are much less defined than John usually draws them.

BUT SHANNA AVATAR PROCLAIMS THAT TIME TRAVEL IS THE ANSWER.

But they’d still want to keep roughly to the same design and character.
Iwatani really isn’t the sort to haggle or insist upon the “worth of his name.” Or even show much of a reaction to adventurers haggling with him.

I think it’s as simple as “they weren’t planning to make Iwatani and co. such a big part of the plot”. Or even, “the character concept changed over time”. Keep in mind how many characters they’re juggling, and that these comics are uploaded over years with no opportunity to go back and edit. I stay away from making webcomics for precisely this reason, as I’m too fond of editing and re-editing to ever be able to handle such a rapid comic turnover.

It also depends on if he can make himself look blameless at the time. Someone who say, spends a lot of time at home without many servants can’t mysteriously vanish without people talking. And, well, if it’s convenient at the time, her death may be something that’s already planned, but he’s waiting for a moment where it’ll do him the most good.
