Chapter 4 – Page 24
Once again, we’d like to thank our crack team of Continuity Errorists. We’ve sent a letter of apology to the former Payet Best stunt double and now recognize our makeup & special effects department is at fault. The entire department has been sacked, and their duties will now be performed by catering.
Aw! I wanted Syr’nj to do science to him.
So did I!
i must say so di i.
Indeed.
I think Best is using…*wails on guitar*…coda-ed language.
And that, Best, is why you fail. Only someone who is the worst sees his friends as backup singers, yes.
Love this story still, I’m really enjoying following this one. I’ll check it multiple times at night until I find a new page. ^^;
Friends? When did they become friends? They were just working together.
And they were not only working together Best did most of the work aka most kills. Sure he did it in a very not-planed and instinct-driven way but it was effectiv.
Effective at killing, maybe. Not effective at accomplishing anything.
left alone, he would’ve lost all the kids and nearly died himself in the ship crash, he may be powerful, but he doesn’t seem that smart…
That’s right Best you don’t need them; you practically soloed that instance. I hope we don’t go to long without seeing more of Best because I really do like him, and I feel like he should be an adventurer swooping in to ruin the gangs plans/ take all the credit for himself. It’s a role perfectly suited for his oddly endearing blend of delusion, competence, and charm.
Ah well. Soloing gets you more exp anyway.
Though I have to note that Best’s wording seems a little over the top regardless of the fact that this is a fantasy comic. I don’t think even really arrogant people actually talk like that. I could be wrong though.
Good show anyway. :) Hopefully we get more “besting” in the future.
“I don’t think even really arrogant people actually talk like that.”
Just think of Best as a medieval precursor to gangsta rappers.
He’s a bard who’s trying to become a legendary hero- it’s like having both learned to write professionally and decided to live your life specifically in order to make your autobiography as awesome a story as possible. People may not talk that way, but legendary heroes do, so I get the feeling he thinks over all the lines he could use in any given situation and picks the Best-sounding one.
Oh yes, a quote comes to mind:
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…”
O – I – C – WHAT – U – DID – THAR!
Ah. I can even now hear the whine of “I’m just playing my character. Why aren’t you letting me play my character?” from Best’s player, in some metagame dimension. While Frigg’s player sits there, smug in the knowledge that he’s perfectly safe, thanks to his voluntary embrace of the concept of PC Immunity.
Wait… Fall? I dun wanna wait that long. :C
Syrinj is probably the most sensitive one in the group, and even SHE”S had enough of Best. Off to a solo career, eh? well, i don’t suppose that’s TOO bad (though for all i know next page will show Byron waking up into a berserker rage and anhillating him…Byron’s normally a calm, intelligent, thoughtful individual. perhaps that means the “on” button is just as hard to get working for this berserker as the “off” button. mind you hard does NOT=impossible.) If he does make it safely to the end of the episode, i hope Payet does Ok..and of course I hope he gets that life lesson he’s in dire need of without too high a body count being involved.
Byron needs to channel less Bill Bixby and more Lou Ferrigno.
Best retains his title as best character in Guilded Age.
Indeed…
Something tells me he’s going to aim for the “Best Villian / Boss fight” catagory next.
I expect waking rage.
And all of my suspicions have been confirmed.
First off, love the update. I would have enjoyed seeing Worst get clobbered, but you can’t have everything ( where would you put it?).
You know, I’ve been looking over the archives, and I have a bizzare question.
What class, exactly, is Frigg?
Early life suggests Rogue. But, she was brought up by the Stoner Sisters, and uses a Cleric’s favorite weapon, the Heavy Mace. ( OK, she would have had to burn a Feat for the Tower Shield, unless that is just supposed to be a heavy steel shield…) Her whole “This is a fight, hits or GTFO” line tends towards a Barb, except Barbs don’t like heavy armor, and tend to not use shields because they really prefer the massive damage output of two-handed weapons. She certainly doesn’t have the Cha to go for Pally, but seems too smart to go pure Fighter.
I see her as a Riott Tank(D&D Online build) with bludgeoning rather than slashing focus.
But that is assuming we want to shoehorn the character into some form of D&D.
Actually, I have been seriously thinking this over….
I think we are looking at a Gestalt party.
Worst ( ugh) is a Bard/FIghter That gives him his Skill-monkey points, but still gives him the fighting skills.
Byron is a Barb/Fighter Pure combat oriented dual wielding can’t be hit in light armor Ninja substitute.
Syr’Nj is a Druid/Warmage ( Except that, being a Science-doer her Warmage abilities show through as Sciencey-stuff)
Gravedust is a Fighter/ ( I want to say Cleric with his ways with the spirit world.)
Bandit is a Rogue/Fighter.
And Frigg, who got me started on this, is a True Neutral Cleric/Barb. ( Up to this point she hasn’t needed to use any spells, and hasn’t seen any reason to. And, we haven’t seen her get into any serious combat yet. If I’m right, I will be very interested to see her get into a real battle, since a properly run Cleric-Barb has some very sneaky tricks up their sleeves.)
I agree with most of your thoughts there, except for Frigg and Gravedust. Gravedust is a shaman (as he says); Frigg doesn’t have to be anything other than a Chaotic Good cleric of Kord (or an equivalent deity with the Strength domain). She certainly seems to be all about strength as the answer to everything. Which of course is part of her charm :D
Frigg’s a Crusader.
In a little more detail, the characters’ classes are on the title=”cast page”>Cast page…
Frig is obviously enough rogue for evasion aka 2 and enough barb lvls to snake some rage and uncanny dodge while keeping full bab and other pluses when not in heavy armor maybe and atleast 2-4 in fighter for feats and tower shield and heavy armor proficiency then she would now be a high enough lvl to start getting into all the really easy to abuse prestige classes all the while not taking exp penalties for multi classing due to being human and not extending any of the classes too far from each other and at the same time taking such small lvls in classes would make her fort and reflex saves amazing and the will a little low but nothing the feats and prestige classes cant fix with 1-2 lvls power gaming is easy in dnd 3.5 hell making immortal/god slaying kobolds by lvl 4 is doable by the rules as printed.
Well, assuming we do…
She makes dramatic entrances and throws down a lot of smack talk. She also hits things hard. Assuming we’re throwing ToB out (she could easily be a Crusader) I’d say Fighter with the Zhentarim and Dungeoncrasher variants, PrC’ing into something like Dread Commando.
You guys are all wrong. She’s just a warrior with cross class levels in bluff.
Uh, guys? She’s a Paladin. A humorously sideways take on a standard Advanced Dudgeon & Draggin’ Paladin. “Crusader” is a contraction of “Okay, she’s an AD&D Paladin, everybody gets that, what with the mace-swingin’-plate-covered-member-of-a-monastic-religious-order thing, but we don’t want to get a stink and desist letter from Whizzers of The Coast or whoever the hell owns D&D these days, so we’re callin’ her a Crusader ‘cuz that’s about the same thing and that’s that”.
…Seriously, you’re embarrasking yourselves.
Well, Wizards certainly doesn’t own the word Paladin, and Crusader is a class in D&D anyway. But yeah, it’s on her character sheet. She’s a paladin.
She’s a Frigg-ate. End of discussion.
;)
Hm. Wonder who’ll get paid for rescuing the kiddies…
I’m guessing the rest of the group as they are the ones that have the kids with them, which is interesting because I would imagine Best isn’t one to walk away from a job unpaid…
I for one am glad to see him leave though, sooner Best is gone the sooner Bandit comes back into the picture ^_^
Best will come back for his share, but something tells me Bryon wont be interested in paying. I smell Round Two…
See, now that Best is shown to be a pompous, conceited jerkass, there’s no way he’ll live to end of the storyline.
I like how best is like “Frigg?” And she just goes “Whatev.”
The bloodstains on Best’s shirt have magically vanished between this page and the last. Whatever cleaning product he’s using, I want some!
Best couldnt tell you what brand it is, but he remembers the advertisement
“It’s the best!”
Clearly a magical belly shirt of +5 stain resistance!
Panel 2 made me laugh. Indifference may be the best onomatopoeia I’ve ever seen (and I’ve seen some awesome onomatopoeia in the comic Daisyowl).
What’s the onomatopoeia equivalent of TV Tropes’ “Unsound Effect”? Non-omatopoeia, perhaps?
I was wondering why you guys didn’t just read the comic again to see what they said about the characters. Byron is a Berzerker, as has been stated often, Gravedust is a Shaman, as he’s stated at least once near the beginning, BAndit is obviously a thief, the Shit Elf is a Bard, Frigg (which, by the way, is english slang for um… ‘personal-gratification’, my English teacher had told me that, back when I was in high school, can’t believe I remember that.) was either a Cleric or ‘Paladin’, since she came from a church, but I wasn’t sure what Syr’nj was. I doubt she’s a warmage, since she acts the opposite of a warmage, and I’ve yet to see any spell-casting on her part. Her inventions don’t count.
“Hey check it out, I put sulfur on a piece of wood, and when you strike it against a rough surface, it lights on fire”
-GASP- “Magic!”
Just foolin’ around, don’t hurt me. ._.
Frigg is also (and this is a MUCH earlier use) the name of the Norse goddess of the home. Some folks have said she’s the equivalent of the Greek Goddess Hera; but unlike Hera, Frigg has her own warriors and is a tough cookie, and stands up to her husband when she feels the need.
Frankly that’s kind of who I thought of when I saw the name: a warrior priestess.
Hawk summed it up the best but If you want to get DND about it, they call her a Crusader in the character page which I assume the class is like a Paladin but without the magic.
Check, evil now. (Or, well, evil soon enough.)
Not so sure about that… I get the feeling that Best is still stuck on himself as epic hero, and thus pursuing noble goals- simply not allied with Our Heroes anymore. If that’s the case, then he’ll probably go on taking the same kinds of jobs the party does, and if we see him again it’ll probably be as their competition- antagonist, sure, but not evil, because he’s trying to do what they’re doing, just without letting them take any credit.
I’m sure he sees himself as good. But then, I don’t think people who do evil things do them because they wake up one morning and think, “you know what I could really go for this morning? Some evildoing.”
Poor Best; kicked out of the group right before they get big. And he was the most talented member. Or at least the handsomest.
“But Brian, we don’t want Pete, we want Ringo…”
Read the “Erfworld” comic on Giants in the playground for the most epic onomatopoeia ever. Also a good comic in its own right!
Guilded Age is made by some of the people who did Erfworld.
I’m afraid not, duder. They’re just good friends of ours.
Dammit! So close!
Of course, my statement will be correct as soon as I meld the counterparts from both groups into one person!
MUAHAHAHAHAH! It’s alive!
And they’re not on GitP anymore, anyways. Erf’s on its own site now.
I say “Good Riddance.”
Good Riddance!
Best may be a competent fighter but he’s too much of an insufferable douchebag. Why people find him to be likable at all is beyond me.
I’m kinda baffled why he’s so popular as well. >.>
Because he “should” have gotten asoep’d to death. I like watching a character succeed when everything says they should fail.
He’s an RPG twink.
It’s not that we like him. Quite the opposite. Like the Joker from Batman… He’s the guy we love to hate.
Sadly, just about every FRP has a character like Best. They show up, upstage everyone, manage to outdo everyone in a number of ways, and then get miffed that people won’t fall in line behind them like brainless sheep.
The worst part is when their character really is competent. It’s the other PLAYERS, not characters, who get frustrated. The last FRP I was in had one of those characters. Unfortunately, that character was played by the GM’s wife, who couldn’t stand my wife. My only viable option was to leave the group.
Best brings back sad memories for me. I’m glad to see him go.
Now the only question is, how does Bandit join the party?
Best’s clothes don’t have any blood on them anymore.
Hah. Best has not yet learned that you don’t win certain fights. You just loose less obviously.
I’d feel sorry for him if he wasn’t such a prick.
Wait. People think Frigg is anything but a fighter? She’s not a magic user. She wears plate mail. Her wisdom stat’s probably through the floor. Sure, she was part of a religious order, but she was “drafted” against her will.
Besides, none of the nuns seemed to be magic users of any stripe.
The character page lists her class as a Crusader.
I bet Bryon’s just gonna get up and be like.
“Is he gone? Bout time…*
I bet Byron’s gonna tell his drinking buddies “how it felt”.
Hey Best! Trolling is against the forum rules.
He’s flame-bait…
OH MAN! It would be awsome if that was how he died, later in the serries.Either by Bryon’s hand, or by Friggs… or most likely, by his own.
It’s taken me this long to remember that the sky elves were rubbishing the party over the idea of a “flying machine” at the start of this chapter…
http://guildedage.net/webcomic/chapter-4/chapter-4-page-3/
Wait, Catering? Thanks, but I don’t want SFX made from Pop Rocks, Mentos and Cola. And while the actors now may enjoy applying pancake, raspberry juice lipstick may just be counterproductive.
Its pretty obvious that Best isn’t the chosen one that the retarded village thought he was(considering his name was wrong), so honestly I don’t know if its dumb luck or just pure douchebaggery that has kept him from getting killed by kobolds so far.
I think it’s probably the fact that he’s an incredibly skilled douchebag.
To be honest, when I saw her hold up those syringes in the former page, I thought she told him to keep still because she was gonna prevent their wounds from getting infected or something.
No way did she have his welfare at heart in that scene. That was a cold “don’t you get near my friend!”
So anyways, I’m not much for camaraderie but even I know you need friends around as
meat shieldserm, people for the enemy to aim at besides you, I mean,at the very least some free XP.Man, defining friendship is hard.
Yeah. For my role playing games, I usually have really un-observant characters or really dumb characters… Extreamly unlucky.
I always make 1 close friend in the party (different player every time)… and they die by trying to help me. XD
I hope Best gets whats coming to him. Karma Houdini’s are so fuckin’ annoying.
Good riddance!
My biggest regret – No more Guilded Age until fall. Probably mid-September if I had to guess… or later even.
Finally find a webcomic I love, and it goes on hiatus… Arent I lucky?
Who’s on hiatus?
It’s the joke you made in the alt tag. A couple people think we’re not coming back until fall. Heh, heh, they’ll get SO CONFUSED.
Who are you?
Nono, T said they’ll get confused, not that you…
…Wait, where am I? Who am I? What happened to the ducks made of muffins sequestering the moon clavicles?
They’re on holiday.
One. There’s always one. I knew it, I knew it.
Is the person on the far right supposed to be anyone we know in the last panel?
Sigh…I had hoped Byron was just playing possum and was about to make his dramatic comeback. Thus far he’s been a disappointing berserker (though an interesting character).
Aaaaand back to disliking the bard… opinion probably swayed by Frigg’s indifference and finalised by his Cartman-style outburst.
Really… the bit where he feels he has to justify himself, THEN looks to her for backup because they had sex… THAT right there is weakness of character… and she ain’t gonna support him for it.
Still somewhat impressed that he beat Byron… but it is still possible that Byron let him win.
But anyway… nobody likes a ragequitter.
