“You think you’re useful? What? You can cast WEB? Call me when you can crit greater cleave through 16 enemies in one round like our berserkers and we’ll talk.”
I don’t know what it’s like at this moment (I quit playing WoW, in an amazing coincidence, shortly after they went from making minor tweaks to balance in each patch and revising the whole system whenever a new expansion came out to revising the whole system whenever a new patch came out), but there have certainly been times when mages did dismal damage compared to all the other damage-dealers.
“Syr’Nj, give yourself to the Altruists. It is the only way you can save your friends. Yes, your thoughts betray you. Your feelings for them are strong. Especially for… sister. So, you have a little sister! Your feelings have now betrayed her, too. If you will not turn to us… then perhaps she will…”
“Search your feelings, Ardaic, you can’t do this. I feel the conflict within you. Let go of your hate.”
“It is too late for me, Wood Elf. Iwatani has shown you the true nature of the Altruist. They are your masters now.”
“Your thoughts betray you, Ardaic. I feel the good in you, the conflict.”
“There is no conflict.”
“You couldn’t bring yourself to fire me before and I don’t believe you’ll destroy me now.”
“You underestimate the power of the Heads of Houses. If you will not surrender, then you will meet your destiny.”
Possibly Iwatani has no problems with the assassination attempt failing. It could be that he even wants to use Syr’Nj to take down the other “Altruists”.
Oh, right. I almost forgot that Iwatani is acting on his own in some of the things he does. And Syr does not know that, given what she was told by the assassin, so maybe there might be some gun-jumping happening…
Don’t mind me; I’m still trying to get everything straight in my own head. :P
My lord. I just twigged on the name Caneghem!!!
It might be because I’m currently playing Might and Magic III from GOG.
Nice tip of the hat to classic games, even if they weren’t MMO.
“Guys, you’re not even player classes. You’re one of those weird NPC classes in the DM’s guide that no one ever remembers exist. I don’t even know how to level you.”
I like how Syr’Nj is upset not only that the la-li-lu-le-lo Altruists threatened her life, but also that they couldn’t even abide by their own ultimatum! Being evil is one thing, but respectable evildoers at least have the decency to be consistent!
I’m still not sure how much of this is the “altruists” working together and how much it’s Iwatani acting alone behind their backs, but I would put my money on Iwatani.
Literally. I would withdraw all my money as coins, in whatever currency that gives the highest weight to value ratio, and put it on top of Iwatani, thereby crushing him.
He’s probably set up the assassin early because he knows if she doesn’t trust the altruists she won’t try to tell them she was attacked and will avoid putting herself into his way politically to stay clear of them…
Actually because she didn’t join immediately that is why they set the assassin. The instant that she indicated that she needed to decide they knew she wouldn’t decide their way. Being altruist would imply no wish to make your own decisions, but allow others to make them for you.
I suspect His Grace Iwatani is acting independently of the usurpers. The ursurpers know that even if Syr’Nj said “No”, the best she could do was make noise. And who she’s going to tell? Besides, they could launch a public smear campaign and suddenly no one would find Syr’Nj credible.
Plus I don’t the ursurpers are interested in starting a war with the wood elves after having chased off His Grace Pardo (and not too mention already fighting a war with the savage races).
“You think you’re useful? What? You can cast WEB? Call me when you can crit greater cleave through 16 enemies in one round like our berserkers and we’ll talk.”
“Find Saurfang. Then we’ll get this whole thing done in one global cooldown.”

‘I can’t hear you over the sound of me casting grease. Oops! I seem to have cast burning hands to ignite the grease!”
“Mages are completely outclassed in DPS by everything else”, well, this settles it, Sepia World is the evil twin version of our world.
The game mirrors WoW, not D&D.
I opened this page and at first I was like “OH SHIT! LOOK OUT BEHIND YOU SYR’NJ!” and then I figured it out.
Whew!
“Syr’Nj, give yourself to the Altruists. It is the only way you can save your friends. Yes, your thoughts betray you. Your feelings for them are strong. Especially for… sister. I don’t know if I should dunk you in a recently used, unflushed toilet or give you a basket of delicious cookies…
…
Would both be acceptable?
Compromise: you can toss your cookies at me.
…but everybody still has both of their hands. :/
Now I really want to see that happen in the comic.
You don’t keep a mage around for the dps, but for conjured food and mana water. But then, I guess you only need one…

“The Altruists” is a very subtle yet surprisingly menacing name for them. Really menacing man. Very cool.
“Not only do they call themselves altruists…” *sighs* “…They’re right behind me, aren’t they?”
She’s not Wily enough to pull that off.
See, that was my reaction!
My lord. I just twigged on the name Caneghem!!!

Looming above her like that, perhaps they’re better named as TALLtruists.
Ha!

Pfft, so much for “bring the player, not the class.”
