Huh. Iwatani’s name is conspicuously absent there. Sounds like Bedard knows full and damn well what he’s been doing… and supports it, perhaps? Interesting.
Yesssssssssss. you beat me by two minutes with your comment. Nobody in Gastonia govermint sneezes without
Iwatani being involved in making it happen. Pretty sure “yes” was not the answer expected from his grace. Pretty sure Mister B is leading Myamoto into the only possible conclusionby design
I’ve had the impression that Bedard was Iwatani’s co-conspirator all along. We haven’t really seen him do much to that effect on-screen… but he’s always had the vibe of moving pieces behind the screen, generally backs up Iwatani’s aims without seeming to overtly side with him, and it must be remembered that he controls the press…
Or… Bedard smells what Iwatani is cooking and doesn’t like it much but isn’t stupid enough to go after him openly. The plan may be : lead Myamoto to believe he is the king Gastonia needs, show him Iwatani is in his way, then covertly back him up and use him as a figure-head/ fall guy.
Nov12 Ugh. there is no record of Marie Antoinette ever uttering those words, in fact they are from Rousseau’s &#ie10;Conf2ss8ons„, written when she was 9. and MA actually cut down on her spending and donated a great deal to charities. If you’re going to use an example please at least do some basic research.
The clerics could not identify the victim. The burns were too intense and extensive, even necromantic restoration wasn’t enough to provide a useful semblance.
Even if he hadn’t fallen prey to a House Iwatani father-son bonding moment, that guy was generally shown to be a good and decent person, therefore not a candidate.
You know what would be fantastic if that was the case? If Taro ends up being a good king.
I mean, he’d be manipulative, and scheming, but take an observant child who’s been trained to the skullduggery of cloak and dagger politics, put him in a position of authority and tell him that the people need him to do the right thing? He’s going to get a HUGE hero complex, but instead of being easily manipulated or reckless, it’s going to be tempered by trying to cope in ‘real world’ ways with his problems.
He’ll be an absolute terror to his enemies and eventually screw up the ultimate plans of the Shadow Government (though in a way that’ll probably make his dad super proud of him), but for the general populace, he’s going to usher in a golden age.
I’m conflicted: a bit of me would like to watch Taro make a heel-face turn and be a good – no, great – king, tearing down what his character has been built up to be and confounding the schemes of the Shadow Government; but another bit of me dislikes the little psychopath so greatly that I wonder if I’d really like to watch that… (And another bit of me thinks that Taro being a good king would be fantastic – in, alas, the meaning of “remote from reality”.)
Nyehhh. I don’t see Taro being the sort to develop a hero complex. His childhood passion is to be the Bond villain, sitting in his smug chair, stroking the cat.
At least Roman History points to the contrary. Almost every Caesar who started as a child sucked, to put it politely. And Taro obviously seems to be a terrible person.
While he is certainly not among the worst of the Caesars, newer research (meaning: research from the 20th and 21th century) doesn’t judge him as kindly as early centuries did. So I am not sure whether i would consider him an exception.
This strikes me as incredibly unlikely. The elder Iwatami might be a good king if he turns his scheming and manipulating towards the good of the realm, and it’s possible that he would because he can fake empathy and would view Gastonia’s success as his own success. Taro, however, has always been portrayed as reckless and cackling gleefully at the suffering of others. If he’s given a chance to rule he’d be more likely to become a Caligula or a Joffrey than a Solomon or an Elizabeth.
I get the “you’re a dead man already” trope – but why? Miyamoto doesn’t seem to be the sharpest tool in the shed, so couldn’t he be manipulated? Why should they off him? Why this whole setup? And why is Bedard leading him to be a would-be-candidate for the throne?
Yes well, because you clearly want the job, we shall now do everything to make sure you never get it. In fact, could you step into the next room? I have an assassin waiting and he charges by the hour!
That would be RUDE. This is not the gentleman’s way.
Slow working poison, I guess.
But I don’t think he will really try to KILL him.
Disable him, and see him suffer, yes.
But not KILL.
So much more civilized that way.
Hahahaha, I didn’t expect Miyamoto to make that face! This is getting good.
This IZZZZZZZZZZ getting good. Think Iwatani is behind all this scheming? I don’t think “yes” was the answer expected from his grace.
I don’t think it was the answer desired from his grace, but I do think it was the answer expected (which is why his wine was poisoned 35 minutes ago).
Nah, in that case it was the answer both desired and expected. Expected because… him, and desired because then the poisoning is justified? :P
He needs a man he can put on the throne, so he can stand behind it. Wheels within wheels.
Yes, put wheels on the throne! That way you can push it over a cliff.
Oh, you don’t need wheels on a throne to push it off a cliff. You can just drive a Goblin War Machine into it at sufficient speed. Bonus points FTW!
SICK BURN!!! Man… “soft shuffle dis” must be one of those abilities.
Seems like the number at the top of Gastonian society are going to be even smaller…
Oh yeah, that’s a death flag if I’ve ever seen one.
I read it as “I assumed you would say no so I already picked someone else”
Booooooo
Dick move Mister Bedard, dick move. I wholeheartedly approve.
Never trust a man with non-transparent glasses.
Gonna get murked’ soooo haaaard…
Their motives are very opaque.
Does every page have to go under the lens?
Some people find that the puns help them focus.
Personally, I find them convexing.

Or: kill this Iwatani dude, become king, the end.

Interesting how Miyamoto’s tag has been changed to “His Grace Miyamoto.”
That was always his title.
I stand corrected.
Mr. Bedard is now my favourite character. Well played.
The clerics could not identify the victim. The burns were too intense and extensive, even necromantic restoration wasn’t enough to provide a useful semblance.
The name, the face, the comment. You truly have it all.
And you, of course, have the face to comment on it.
You are the man to appreciate this kind of handiwork :-)
The silent, plotting type. I like this guy.
And his glasses.
EEEEEEEEE intrigue!!!!
(sorry, the gravatar made me…)
Oh. Oh dear. Bedard seems to be channeling Lord Vetinari and he’s already up to irony.
Trolling McTrollface
He’s doing the huge grin and all, it’s just hidden behind the moustache.
Oh, oh my. Where ever could this be going~?
Whoah, I was just thinking about miner guy, is, is it him?
If memory serves, when we last saw him he was poisoned by Iwatani.
Even if he hadn’t fallen prey to a House Iwatani father-son bonding moment, that guy was generally shown to be a good and decent person, therefore not a candidate.
His amazing taste in overcoats is sorely missed
Well, he’s poisoned.
It’s always the villain in glasses (Sorry, Log Horizon reference, carry on people, nothing to see here)
I don’t know why, but I think Bedard’s suggestion for king will be Iwatani’s brat… Taro?
Yep, I think you nailed it. Was thinking the same thing. Time for the son to shine.
You know what would be fantastic if that was the case? If Taro ends up being a good king.

Severus Alexander was pretty good. At least until he got assassinated. :/

I was going to make a comment about evil lens flare…
But then Phil had to go and make the alt text and I got distracted giggling.
Well, dead noble’s town here we come.
Reading previous page:
“…and I believe such a future-looking future monarch may be in my household”
Oh, FFS, take a room, you two.
New page:
“…then I’m afraid you should have shown more initiative.”
*spills one’s drink* No, wait! What? What did just happen here?
Waiting for the next update breathlessly.
*Look at new gravatar*
Note to self: stop drinking molten lava.
Miyamoto may or may not be seconds away from being stabbed in the back by the new king…
I get the “you’re a dead man already” trope – but why? Miyamoto doesn’t seem to be the sharpest tool in the shed, so couldn’t he be manipulated? Why should they off him? Why this whole setup? And why is Bedard leading him to be a would-be-candidate for the throne?
I’m not sure he is going to die. He may be manipulating Miyamoto for some end.
well, this IS an awkward moment isn’t it?
Yes well, because you clearly want the job, we shall now do everything to make sure you never get it. In fact, could you step into the next room? I have an assassin waiting and he charges by the hour!

When conversing with notorious schemers, it is advisable to panic if they start referring to you in the past tense…
This feels like roman republic becoming a roman empire.
dislike for monarchy, but needing one due to the crisis of the time.
…I almost feel sorry for the ‘savage races’.
Okay. Out of curiosity and ignorance, where is the alt text? I had assumed it would be under the comic, but nothing’s there.
I saw the last panel and… Well…

Their numbers are dwindling…
