“I’m not a tavern tale wizard. Do you seriously think I would explain my master stroke to you if there were even the slightest possibility the Gastonians could affect the outcome? Yes, I have been preparing it for weeks already.”
I’m glad I’m not the only one whose first instinct was that reference. My only concern with this development is that the Sky Elves were the major selling point for the support of Don Gobligno.
Do you think I would be here talking about my plans if you had any chance of stopping it? I’ve been casting spells like crazy for weeks now….maybe months…come to think of it, I can’t quite recall the last time I rested…probably not an issue…
I note he acknowledged there’s a time limit on how long they can probably hide themselves elsewhere.
Someone should really have thought to bring up the inevitability of them being discovered anywhere habitable they go, and point out that it’d be better to have allies when all this hiding nonsense finally has to come to a stop, than to uncloak themselves into a world ruined by Gastonian-fueled war.
Someone should also bring up the fact that it ain’t just mortals fueling war, if Tectonicus’ support for the Trolls and Dwarves is any indication. So warlike temper tantrums are also inevitable and will likely continue well into whatever future the Sky Elves hope to hide until.
It’s more a reference to the “Gilded Age” of the ’20s and ’30s of the USA. Lots of growth everywhere, but many social issues and lots of corruption as well.
I just keep reminding myself that the former Peacemakers just finished a marathon session with a group of oracles. They’re not going to get blindsided by anything.
There’s actually some symmetry in this. The Land Sharks decided to go their own way leaving the Worlds Rebellion and the Sky Elves may do the same. At least they won’t be aiding Gastonia so that simplifies matters.
The Wood Elves have already been driven out and the Gnomes are covertly sneaking away. Right now it seems that Gastonia has whatever humans and shit elves are sticking around out of patriotism/etc.
he’s doing what’s best for his people, Namely getting them out of the massive cluster fuck the local politics have turned into. He’s not really wrong to do so either, from his perspective none of the local factions have dealt with him fairly, so why should his people risk subjugation or extermination for them when they can just fuck off into the wild blue yonder and settle somewhere with fewer raving lunatics?
Which, I think, is exactly what Clair just figured out. It also explains why Caneghem has been going along with the Houses without really seeming to commit to anything except using magic when asked.
In a way, this might be the best result for the Peacemakers. It indicates that the Sky Elves won’t be fighting for Gastonia as long as they give Caneghem enough time to finish up his plans first, and meanwhile Caneghem might not care about any Sky Elves who choose to fight for the World Rebellion voluntarily. He just won’t order anyone to do it.
Seeing as how they are relocating to a land of abundance that shouldn’t be a problem. Seriously his arguments are sound and seeing as how listening to the Peacemakers got them into an alliance with a duplicitous human dominated council why should any of them listen to their latest proposal. The irony is that the sky elves are probably the most evolved of the races and they’re choosing to do the same thing the least evolved race, the landsharks did, leave the fight.
Dude’s been prepping the whole damn time; definitely smarter than we gave him credit for, and in the name of protecting his people, too! I’ve got nothing but respect for Canegham right now.
Also, it’s still a good thing for our heroes in the short run, right? It means, at least, that the Sky elves won’t be fighting alongside Gastonia, which hurts Gastonia quite a bit, does it not?
Yeah, okay, fair… guess the Archmage has only been playing for time when Gastonia fell apart… thing is, is he really sure there’s not something even worse out there he’ll be porting everyone into? Not necessarily a bad thing to have a fallback plan… even if said fallback plan is on fire…
Maybe they just finally went on strike, what with all the employee deaths, and benefits including being at the center of the pentagram when they sacrifice you to Tentacle-sama.
If either side wins they’ll eventually come after the Sky Elves for what they did.
So the Archmage is nowhere near as intelligent as he thinks. It’s better for the Sky Elves to be on the winning side in the long run.
What did the sky elves do? If Gastonia wins they might come after the sky elves, but the savage races would have little reason to do so. Also neither side would have resources to do any sort of pursuit so far outside their territory, especially when looking for a people capable of magically cloaking a floating city in a rather large world. This really is a smart move on the Archmage’s part. It gets his people out of a war they have no stake in. It also still helps the peacemakers just not as directly as they would like. This is still removing an ally of Gastonia it;s just not making an ally for the savage races.
Penk is only interested in destroying those who oppose the rebellion. If the Sky elves just withdraw from the battle then it’s no different than the land sharks defection so the savages won’t hold a grudge. As for Gastonia that all depends on who wins. Taro and his descendants would hold a grudge, but then again the great houses seek domination over outsiders so getting stabbed in the back is only a matter of time. The heroes winning is the likelier outcome and I don’t see them holding a grudge.
I can’t say as I disagree with Caneghim’s reasoning. If the Sky Elves are capable of taking their majestic cloud city and slipping out before any of this gnarly stuff goes down, why not do so? It’s a big planet. Yeah, it sorta leaves the World Rebellion and a lot of innocent people in the lurch, but could he as a leader seriously ask his people to fight a war they could avoid over territory they don’t even need?
The only flipside to it is that he’s essentially kicking the can down the road; eventually they’ll be discovered again, and eventually, they’ll run out of places to hide. I wonder what the future Sky Elves will do.
If Caneghem- at least- does not prohibit individual Sky Elves from aiding our protagonists in a personal capacity, I will have no problem with his decision.

How I wish I could upvote these comments…
“I cast that spell 35 minutes ago.”
Perfect
I’m glad I’m not the only one whose first instinct was that reference. My only concern with this development is that the Sky Elves were the major selling point for the support of Don Gobligno.
This man is not a republic serial villain.
He did it thirty-five minutes ago.
Yeah, that’s what I’m guessing, too. Unless he found a spell already written for that purpose, right next to the ancient rooting magics spells.
I think the problem is gathering energy for the spell rather than creating it from nothing.
The sun is up. The energy is just being thrown out in a freakin torrent.
Photosynthesis: Not just for wood elves.
In case of emergency break glass with tiny hammer and clearly read magika.
Do you think I would be here talking about my plans if you had any chance of stopping it? I’ve been casting spells like crazy for weeks now….maybe months…come to think of it, I can’t quite recall the last time I rested…probably not an issue…
‘Do you think I would have explained my plan if there was even the smallest chance of you quoting Watchmen at me?”
Twelfth? What a weird word to see typed out.
Also, does that mean the hit game Kingdoms of Arkerra has eleven expansions coming??
His math is a bit off, its more like 1/11th, but twelfth has the word elf in it.
I’m sure he’d be fine with saying one elelfenth of the continent, for the sake of punnery.
Funnily, in German, elf means eleven.
I much prefer 6 in German.
According to Sigmund Freud, what comes between fear and sex?
Funf.
Those jokes work SO much better orally than written.
I never heard that one, very good!
So does neunundsechzig.
Kinda like Worchester has a silent orc in it.
Now I’m gonna pronounce that word as W-Orc-Hester.
Possibly sequels like some games where you visit different regions in each game.
Or its Australia
By his machinations, he would secure peace. And by peace, we mean, “Peace bitches, we out!“
Honestly, it isn’t that bad of a plan. Getting the hell out before hell rains down.
I note he acknowledged there’s a time limit on how long they can probably hide themselves elsewhere.

I think the worry is more hell raining up.
Given the range of those siege cannons Gastonian has been building quietly.
So his plan is to peace out.
Also, I just figured out that “Guilded Age” rhymes with “gilded cage.” Glad I caught that before it ended. Better late than never I guess.
Dangit Loyal beat me to the “peace out” bit.
It’s not really a rhyme, but more of a homophone. I think it’s actually called a pun in this instance.
Just who are you accusing of homophonia?
It’s more a reference to the “Gilded Age” of the ’20s and ’30s of the USA. Lots of growth everywhere, but many social issues and lots of corruption as well.
You mean circa the 1880s. There was certainly not much growth going on in the 1930s.
No surprise, running away seems to be the Sky Elves mo.
When all you have are doors, everything looks like an exit?
Yeah, there also that ‘creating floating city to get away from people on the ground.’
And then they crashed the city.
I just keep reminding myself that the former Peacemakers just finished a marathon session with a group of oracles. They’re not going to get blindsided by anything.
Why does this come to mind? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03eNODCDdqY&t=84s
Thank you so much for sharing that!
Maybe the Sky Guys will find land and OH SHIT, why are there so many Land Sharks here?
This!
So, just humans then.

Yeah, I’m kinda with Canegham on this one.
Pretty much yeah.
I love how I got the perfect Avatar for that line! XD
History could have told you they’d be neutral from now on. They live in the wind, swishhhhh.
They’re … Swishterland!
That last frame is just too perfect.
And for some magical reason, it seems to be copied from your avatar!
Something tells me he’s been planning to move since the moment the Peacekeepers showed up the first time.
Which, I think, is exactly what Clair just figured out. It also explains why Caneghem has been going along with the Houses without really seeming to commit to anything except using magic when asked.

So long as his next words aren’t “In fact we’re halfway there already, so uh, about that war you thought you were going to be fighting”
Talk to the mana. Neutrality never felt so badass.
This seems appropriate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FjWe31S_0g
Ten bucks says it fucking falls and the sky elves become ‘Slightly Above Sea Level’ elves.
Please… Please let him get his just desserts. Please.

A nice dish of Floating Island, perhaps? http://cafejohnsonia.com/2012/07/julia-childs-floating-islands-recipe.html
The alt-text is a serious truth bomb.
I have nothing but respect for the archmage right now. He’s got game.
You don’t get eyebrows like those without immense cosmic power.
It’s part of the class upgrade.
Prestige class feature?
That’s an oddly specific percentage of how much of the world the war takes up to know.
He’s obviously been weighing the pros and cons of the city staying in one place or moving for a while.
Someone’s been busy!

So is someone going to bring up the cult that’s unraveling all of existence at some point?…
Maybe they just finally went on strike, what with all the employee deaths, and benefits including being at the center of the pentagram when they sacrifice you to Tentacle-sama.
“Do you seriously think I’d explain my masterstroke if there remained the slightest chance of you affecting its outcome? I did it 35 minutes ago.”
I see your objection and raise you an eyebrow.

That is the face of someone who’s been planning this for weeks.
Cannyghem.

Porthos Fitz-Empress likes this.
