I’m glad I’m not the only one whose first instinct was that reference. My only concern with this development is that the Sky Elves were the major selling point for the support of Don Gobligno.

I think the problem is gathering energy for the spell rather than creating it from nothing.

I note he acknowledged there’s a time limit on how long they can probably hide themselves elsewhere.

Someone should really have thought to bring up the inevitability of them being discovered anywhere habitable they go, and point out that it’d be better to have allies when all this hiding nonsense finally has to come to a stop, than to uncloak themselves into a world ruined by Gastonian-fueled war.

Someone should also bring up the fact that it ain’t just mortals fueling war, if Tectonicus’ support for the Trolls and Dwarves is any indication. So warlike temper tantrums are also inevitable and will likely continue well into whatever future the Sky Elves hope to hide until.

He’s not really wrong to do so either, from his perspective none of the local factions have dealt with him fairly, so why should his people risk subjugation or extermination for them when they can just fuck off into the wild blue yonder and settle somewhere with fewer raving lunatics?

Which, I think, is exactly what Clair just figured out. It also explains why Caneghem has been going along with the Houses without really seeming to commit to anything except using magic when asked.

In a way, this might be the best result for the Peacemakers. It indicates that the Sky Elves won’t be fighting for Gastonia as long as they give Caneghem enough time to finish up his plans first, and meanwhile Caneghem might not care about any Sky Elves who choose to fight for the World Rebellion voluntarily. He just won’t order anyone to do it.

Seeing as how they are relocating to a land of abundance that shouldn’t be a problem. Seriously his arguments are sound and seeing as how listening to the Peacemakers got them into an alliance with a duplicitous human dominated council why should any of them listen to their latest proposal. The irony is that the sky elves are probably the most evolved of the races and they’re choosing to do the same thing the least evolved race, the landsharks did, leave the fight.

If either side wins they’ll eventually come after the Sky Elves for what they did.
So the Archmage is nowhere near as intelligent as he thinks. It’s better for the Sky Elves to be on the winning side in the long run.

    • Sporf

      April 21, 2017, 11:41 pm | # | Reply

What did the sky elves do? If Gastonia wins they might come after the sky elves, but the savage races would have little reason to do so. Also neither side would have resources to do any sort of pursuit so far outside their territory, especially when looking for a people capable of magically cloaking a floating city in a rather large world. This really is a smart move on the Archmage’s part. It gets his people out of a war they have no stake in. It also still helps the peacemakers just not as directly as they would like. This is still removing an ally of Gastonia it;s just not making an ally for the savage races.

Penk is only interested in destroying those who oppose the rebellion. If the Sky elves just withdraw from the battle then it’s no different than the land sharks defection so the savages won’t hold a grudge. As for Gastonia that all depends on who wins. Taro and his descendants would hold a grudge, but then again the great houses seek domination over outsiders so getting stabbed in the back is only a matter of time. The heroes winning is the likelier outcome and I don’t see them holding a grudge.

I can’t say as I disagree with Caneghim’s reasoning. If the Sky Elves are capable of taking their majestic cloud city and slipping out before any of this gnarly stuff goes down, why not do so? It’s a big planet. Yeah, it sorta leaves the World Rebellion and a lot of innocent people in the lurch, but could he as a leader seriously ask his people to fight a war they could avoid over territory they don’t even need?

The only flipside to it is that he’s essentially kicking the can down the road; eventually they’ll be discovered again, and eventually, they’ll run out of places to hide. I wonder what the future Sky Elves will do.
