Guest Comic by Aaron Wood (Annotated)
When we ran this comic, Aaron Wood’s chief claim to fame was doing the art for Near and Far, but that strip seems to be as abandoned as Coping with Failure, these days. Aaron, though, can still be found on Etsy, Behance, and the New York Comic-Con. In nerd circles, he may be best known for cheeky mock-propaganda posters like the one for Skyrim here.
Peanut butter and jelly will always have a special significance for me beyond dancing bananas and consonant-heavy abbreviations to use in crossword puzzles. It was the sandwich my mom and housekeeper used to make, and it quickly became the only thing I ever wanted for lunch (except for its occasional variant, peanut butter and honey). It’s still a comfort food for me, so I can identify with Bandit here.
Heavy Aladdin flashbacks in that third panel! “All this for a loaf of bread?”
I get the “combine peanut butter with something sweet” part. I don’t get why it’s almost always jelly in the US, but it’s so iconically American. Kind of how kebab pizza is so iconically Swedish.
Not just any jelly. Peanut butter and Concord grape jelly. Or jam. My mom made it every fall, and it beats the Welch’s stuff hollow.
I know some people swear by strawberry jam, but that’s Just Not Right.
I usually go with just straight peanut butter, myself. But occasionally?
Orange marmalade.
There’s a tradition in our home. If you don’t like what was cooked, there’s always peanut butter. My Darling Bride likes hers without jam, jelly, honey, etc. I’m happy with any berry concoction except strawberry. Honey and even molasses are good too.
I don’t know… I see honey used a lot instead of jelly or jam. Or bananas…
Or onions… Those are pretty common too around here.
For when you really aren’t so much concerned with your health, I occasionally go with Peanut Butter and Marshmallow Fluff =)
Thanks for the shout out! And thanks again for this awesome opportunity! <3
