Hm, here’s another magic-using shit elf like Best and E-Merl, even though the thing about shit elves is that they’re supposed to have lost their magic. Perhaps it’d be more accurate to say they’ve lost their magical community, leaving a lot of raw talents who have to more or less build their own curriculum, whereas the sky and winter elves are a lot more coordinated.
For this plot to be a bit more Guilded Agey and not too much of a Clement Clarke Moore riff, we needed two separate Santa stand-ins. So it’s only logical that the conflict would boil down to which of them was the better one.
I think it’s a bit disturbing that the elf wasn’t wearing anything under that robe.
If you worn a robe all the time… would you?

I had gotten the impression that E-Merl didn’t cast spells, just use magic items. Similar case with Best and his axe.
That isn’t merl.
E-Merl’s mentioned that he can cast minor cantrips, and Best has materialized his axe-guitar out of nothing and made drastic shifts in his appearance. Both rely a lot on their tools, but both seem to have some abilities the tools can’t explain.
I always read it as that the shit-elves had specifically lost their Elf magic, and so had to draw upon other magical traditions. Such as the magical college for E-Merl, Bardic traditions with Best, or cultism for this elf.
