Final Rant-asy

on July 11, 2012
Posted In: Articles

Now, before I launch into full rant mode, allow me to explain the events that prompted this long-winded bitchery:

1) Living in Virginia, I was totally mollywhopped by Mother Nature on the twenty-ninth of June and had my power knocked out along with a million other folks in the tri-state area. Waking up in a pool of gross sweat on the thirtieth, I muttered to myself, “fuck this noise,” and headed out to find other accomodations. I had to go all the way out to Frederick, MD just to find a hotel that had both electricity and vacancy… and only because I decided to start looking for lodging at seven-thirty in the morning that day.

2) By some serendipitous miracle, I broke down and bought a Vita… on the twenty-ninth, mere hours before the fateful storm that would turn countless people into honorary Amish.

3) By the first of July, I found that the Holiday Inn Express was slowly eroding my sanity. In a last ditch effort, I tried to keep my shit together by downloading Final Fantasy IV: Complete Edition. Even after twenty years, that game is incredibly engaging. It completely reminded me of why I used to enjoy JPRG’s.

4) The next day, while charging my Vita, I poked around the internet and watched Square-Enix’s concept trailer for their “next-generation” technology. It completely reminded me of why I no longer play JRPG’s.

S-E is clearly more concerned with making movies only vaguely disguised as video games. Even worse, these movies are absolutely fucking terrible. All emphasis on gameplay has been shirked in favor of meandering, incoherent plots, irritating characters, atrocious dialogue and the ear-sodomizingly terrible voice acting.

Really, Final Fantasy XIII served as the paradigm for the new Square-Enix development initiative.

ConnectiCon!

on July 9, 2012
Posted In: Blog

We’re going to be at the gigantic, sprawling spectacle that is the one and only ConnectiCon this weekend in Hartford, CT! I’m personally super excited to make my triumphant return to this convention after five years, when I hung up my critic hat and vowed never to return until I had something to put on a table.

(And we have several somethings to put on the table. Also available in the Guilded Age Store, of course!)

I’m also super excited to see so many awesome webcomics peeps there, there’s just too many to mention! Come find all of us in Artist Alley. Guilded Age is gonna be at table 19, close to the exit, sandwiched between Hello with Cheese and Super Art Fight. I’ll try to keep the noise down while I huckster, fellas.

Speaking of which, count on me to either kick some ass during a live Super Art Fight bout! I don’t know who my opponent’s gonna be, but it hardly matters. I lay waste to all my enemies rather indiscriminately.

See you there!

OM NOM NOMINATED!

on July 5, 2012
Posted In: Blog

It is my distinct honor and privilege to say that I’ve been nominated for the Philly Geek Awards’ Comic Writer of the Year. To be nominated is a big deal for me, and a milestone of my journey into being the big deal comics creator I want to be. It’s my first nomination for a comics award and hopefully not the last.

Guilded Age is and always has been my first super serious attempt at making real-ass comics that matter to people. So perhaps I’m actually getting there sometime soon.

Thank you all for reading and supporting Guilded Age, me, T, John, David and Erica. We have tons of more places to go and things to do, but we wouldn’t have accomplished what we have so far without the best damn audience in the world: You guys.

EA’s Reboot on my Neck

on June 15, 2012
Posted In: Articles

In a statement released yesterday, EA’s Frank Gibeau discussed the commercial performance of two of the company’s recent franchise reboots, namely SSX and Syndicate. Apparently, only one of the two actually turned out to be “the success [EA was] hoping for.” Now, before I go ahead and spoil the surprise for anyone who missed this bit of gaming news, let’s just take a brief little look-see at each game individually and compare it to its predecessors.
