Annotated 12-17
Employee feedback, lightly salted.
We were still conscious of the fact that watching people watch things is a lot harder to make interesting than watching people do things, so we brought as much comedy as we could to this intro. This would be primarily Phil’s scene, but this page is more me.
We still weren’t aware how important Carol would become to the story, but we were starting to get there. As a result, her attitude begins to shift. She’s still snarking HR, but she’s increasingly concerned about him, and somewhat surprisingly, the story encourages the reader to relate to that concern.
I first read this page and had the thought that I need more context for Carol’s introductory quip. Not about the divine couch potato mentioned therein, but about the possible reasons she occasionally believes in intelligent design.
At the time, it was a trending topic in the background noise of my life, and so I can’t imagine anyone waffling on that. Especially anyone with a solid college education.
Was that just a one-off insincere snark, or did one of you actually flesh out that chunk of background for her?
I’d say Carol was playing with a somewhat lose definition and less interested in the science denialism, more in the core notion that the proof of God is that the complexity of life could not have developed by chance.
That’s kind of how I interpreted it. It didn’t really make sense to me any other way. Glad I’m not alone :)
