Annotated 24-19
The part of me that’s like “c’mon, let’s move it along, let’s moooove it along” feels like Byron and Syr’Nj are MAKING FUN OF ME ON PURPOSE, here.
“Isn’t it nice to have a story that, despite some broader social implications, is so devoid of real conflict that we have to crank the dial on what should’ve been a minor discussion between you and Gravedust? An arc so quiet that the only fight scenes were flashbacks to two guys we hadn’t even mentioned before the previous chapter?” asks Syr’Nj, playing Animal Crossing.
“Yup,” says Byron, sipping a margarita. “I wonder how long we can go without doing anything consequential at all!”
You guys are lucky you’re this cute together, that’s all I’ve got to say.
Yeah, I still think you’re being too hard on yourself. If there are no quiet times, there is no character development, and the “Smashing things” times are way less compelling.
You guys managed an excellent balance, which is one of the things that makes Guilded Age one of my all time favourite webcomics.
Cheers,
Côté
You didn’t rush it, which counts for allot. More importantly, you have us invested in the characters enough that we care even when they are not sword swinging.
Hey well, I didn’t latch on Guilded Age because of the action. It was the intro pages, where I think the only action was a single arrow into that orb of Tectonicus. It was about that comedic dialog and oddball kind of incompetent band of quirky fantasy characters, kinda like a sucky group of D&D.
Honestly, I think the action sequences are usually the weakest part. Mind you, it’s NOT a swing at Waltrip’s work at all. I just don’t quite appreciate action properly on comics in general, I feel. It’s like my fish brain can’t quite fill in the blank from panel to panel to sense a fluid action going. lol
