One writing tip that I don’t consciously follow as often as I should is to make your comic relief a counterpoint to the main story, a kind of compare-and-contrast exercise. While Rachel is busy rediscovering her purpose, Frigg is wallowing in weakness (certainly as she herself would define it) and is saved by circumstance and chance.

Killing the most important figure in their order isn’t something that would occur to the newer sisters. That kind of contradiction is for the advanced class.

I was very ready to change this aspect of the story if Phil didn’t like it. He signed off on it, but voiced a few concerns about how dick-obsessed Frigg was getting. We decided that was something that needed resolving next chapter, which ended up making that chapter a lot more interesting.
