Annotated 35-21
It might add to the unsettling energy that we seem to have skipped a frame or two: a head-shot of Gring shouting “PRILL!”, maybe, followed by another head-shot of Prill glancing back and realizing death’s hungry tentacles are right behind him, and then we’d go to this sequence of desperate running. I don’t know if I can explain why it feels correct to skip those here, but it does. Although the hugeness this two-panel composition gives to the monster doesn’t hurt.
It won’t be the last time we skip a couple frames in their subplot.
The Frigg-Magda bit here is Flo building on Frigg’s long history of insult comedy and Magda’s established difficulties with smack-talk. “Good at everything about being a Champion except being mean” is a pretty good way to sum Magda up.
Oh hey look Penk, there’s your drum! Good thing you stuck with the group and we found it so fast, right, Penk? … Penk?
LOL
At least he’s not the oldest person in town anymore.
It’s something really when Frigg is the one reminding you about priorities. Sure Magda doesn’t know her yet, but it sorta should radiate from Frigg that if SHE is reminding you of them, you’re really, REALLY messing up your priorities.
I don’t think priorities have anything to do with her objection to Magda’s “you are a human”-level insults.
Was more the “and a future CORPSE!”.
But I do admit, it wasn’t really a quip. So… Was it even a quip? Hence, the priorities.
No? As jdorr said, “Just…just stop” didn’t have anything to do with priorities.
I get less a priorities motive to stop and more a “you’re embarrassing yourself” motive to stop
That’s the vibe I was getting too. I do find it remarkable, though, that Frigg doesn’t just (verbally) smash her in return. My, how she’s grown!
I don’t think she swings that way.
The alt-text clarifies it. It simply is too painful to the delicate ear of such a connoisseur and practicer of the smack-talk arts.
Frigg is like uh yeah, eventually I will be a corpse? So?
I think the skip works because this strip picks up from the champions’ perspective, and they wouldn’t have been paying attention until the Horror shattered the mason’s workshop.
I love Magda here. She reminds me of another female dwarf introduced late to the plot.
Before hovering over the link I debated whether you were linking to TootS or Pratchett.
