Annotated 40-9
Okay, so we last saw Syr’Nj treating the fatally poisoned Kur’Ik and refusing to choose between her life, Kur’Ik’s, and the other Peacemakers’. Looks like she, much like the TV series Game of Thrones, has decided to solve some seemingly intractable problems with fast travel. (We’ll somewhat hand-wave how she managed to get the younger sky elves’ attention so quickly, but I’m going to assume she worked out some signal they’d be scrying for after the end of Chapter 37.)
Love the ‘tude the three elves are putting out here. This is serious business, no one’s treating it like a day at the beach…but they, and especially Clair, do not lack confidence in their ability to win this battle. If their appearance had not broken the Cultists’ concentration and disrupted the “big ol’ thing” they were combining their magicks into, the Cultists might’ve had a one in ten chance of victory. As it is, well…
Really, John deserves to give this whole sequence a chef’s kiss.
I’ll repeat: Syr’Nj was “miles away” the last time, too….
I love how in Panel 4 Syr’Nj’s crossbow is at just the proper angle so it looks like she’s shooting a big Nerf gun, but with real arrows!
Everything about this page is perfect, but Clair’s little smiles are IMO the best bit
Goodnight, brother Asok. Oh wait, he’s a troll, maybe he can walk off a bolt to the
eyebrain. Can’t remember if he appears later.Asok was the human. The trolll is Ulak. He does appear later, in the final battle. And a rather enjoyable scene in the epilogue. Possibly more, but I didn’t want to go back far enough into the archives to see.
I’m also not sure this is supposed to be him, since he hasn’t been tagged since Frigg was ‘Zerked, and this troll doesn’t seem to be quite as warty – Ulak has a prominent growth on his right cheek, which this troll isn’t showing either here or in the last page…assuming it’s the same troll in both.
Good points, thanks.
The cultists of uncertain species remind me of Jim Woodring’s Pushpaw character from Frank.
