My original notes had the ghost appeal to Best’s mercenary side, offering a priceless relic as a reward. It’s true that Best shut right up in Chapter 3 when he realized Gravedust was negotiating more gold for the group, so he’s not immune to financial considerations.
But as Phil really started to warm to Best’s anxiety and veiled impostor syndrome (not at all autobiographical for us, oh no), it was much more natural to make that Best’s motive. A remnant of the original idea remains in a later scene, where that relic is offered to Best as a consolation prize.
I think going with the destiny motive was a good call. It added a bit more depth to Best.
I really like that the timing of that “Yes” gives away who it is.
