Between panels 4 and 5, Rachael could have 1. Retreated from her lunge, 2. Used her left arm to block. 3: Kicked. 4. Tripped. Instead she did none of those. Getting an uppercut in the chin is a sign that you really do suck at melee combat. If you’re offering to teach someone, you need to be vastly better than them in SOME area, not using your special power as a last resort/cheat code.
All of that’s a lot easier said than done. Especially when the other person, who’s used to moving as fast as you do in plate armor, isn’t slowed down by it.
BarGamer has a point aobut the sequence as shown not making a lot of sense. However, that only applies if every action in the fight is depicted. I consider it likely there are missing bits which explain everything.
Next page; Frigg waking up, Rachel standing above her with hands on her hips and stern expression on her face, asking “When I said ‘I can teach you how your holy hammershit works’, just what did you think I meant?”
Not enough room to kick, she could have thrown a knee, but it looks like Frigg landed her hit first. She also doesn’t have a hold so I don’t see how she could have tripped (you can’t just stick your foot out, you know?). You’re right about her open guard, but taking an uppercut doesn’t mean you suck. It generally just means you haven’t spent months/years training to keep your left hand up and your chin down.
I’m gonna say that the entire point of this is learning to use the cheat code though. Challenging Frigg to a fight is the only way to get her to put up with it.
Hmmmm….. Y’know, I’m looking at it from an illustrator’s p.o.v.;
1: it’s a comic
2: a visual “shorthand” is needed (not film, after all… can’t do a full choreography)
3: highlights of the round shows each combatant “giving” as well as “getting” in extreme closeup
4: an action cliffhanger.
Rachel cross-blocked… which is just plain stupid irrespective.
Frigg wasted her block by blocking upwards rather than towards her opponent.
Both of them seem to be disregarding footwork and fighting with their eyes shut… and ridiculously enough, the latter is less atrocious than the former.
But mostly just the X-block. Rachel obviously watches too much flashy anime or medieval equivalent. What easier way to get both your arms pinned uselessly against your body.
Hmm. If this follows comedic narrative imperitive, they will fight to a draw, find new respect for each other, pledge eternal friendship, get drunk, and have a hilarious new fight over who gets to buy the next round. Then we see them staggering down the street, arms around shoulders, singing rude songs.
Or, one wins the fight, and the other seethes with resentment forever after. Could go either way.
Methinks differently. Since the point of this exercise is to get Frigg to access her power, I think the fight is about to take a dramatic turn in Rachel’s favor. The pummeling allowing Frigg to in turn “turn it on”, at which point it will probably require outside intervention to keep Frigg from killing Rachel for reals.
And at that point Best miraculously reappears to sing a song goading the ladies more and more into revealing their true nature. Speaking of nature then Syrnj will try to break up the fight only to get pulled into it. Then we’ll see Bandit jump in revealing herself to have been hiding in the bushes watching all along. Then……E-Merl wakes up in a cold sweat wondering….what does it all mean?
Finally, some action.
Ooh. Holy cat fight!
Naa, More like a cougar vs. she-wolf fight.
I guess you call Rachel the cougar, right ?
‘Imma chagin mah lazer!’
I have achieved a new level of Super Paladin. You may call it Super Paladin 2.
NOOO HOOOLDING BAAAACK!!!
Okay, but I really doubt pulling up really large beets and throwing it at walking bombs is a super power. Now floating in air, that’s a power.
Someones been watching a little G Gundam.
You may now insert your jokes about Rachels use of ‘Shining Finger’ on Frigg.
*Eyebrow Waggle*
Damn, beat me to it, sir.
This hand of mine glows with an awesome power! Its burning grip tells me to defeat you!
SHINING FINNNNGEEERRRR!
Shes fingering her? Sounds hot :3

Not really; we can’t see all of what is happening in panel 4 so it mostly comes across as super nitpicky.
She is vastly superior at using the shiny golden glow power, I thought that was obvious ?
Next page; Frigg waking up, Rachel standing above her with hands on her hips and stern expression on her face, asking “When I said ‘I can teach you how your holy hammershit works’, just what did you think I meant?”
…and if the point is to show off the special power?
You don’t have to suck at something for someone else to be better than you at it.
^^
What he said.
Also what she said.
Not enough room to kick, she could have thrown a knee, but it looks like Frigg landed her hit first. Shrug. Looks pretty solid to me.
My reaction as a reader..? “ZOMG! So AWEsome!!”

Oh shit. Rachel’s got the touch.
She’s got the POWEEEEEEER
She is such a bright girl, but maybe it is time for her to lighten up. Or is it that Frigg just turns her on?
I don’t know the answers to any of those questions, but I do know that since Rachel has appeared, I’ve taken a shine to her.
For my part, I especially like her teaching methods. While she has a hard time getting her pupils to participate, her lessons are always illuminating.
It’s good to know that the divine Light of Life can be used to beat the crap out of people. Speaks volumes about the nature of life.
It is rare to find a teacher with that special golden touch.
Agreed. It’s in the heart, it’s in the will, it’s in her mighty hands of… Steel? *mutters, gets out pencil, begins to check working.*
When all hell’s breakin’ loose
She’ll be riding the eye of the storm
KA…ME…HA…ME….!!!
*10 episodes later*
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-
Yes, I suppose invoking the name of the first king to conquer and unite the Hawaiian islands would bring great power.
They all need a little bit more fibre in their dies.
s/dies/diets
Commence the laying on of hands!
Faaaaaalcoooooonnnn…
THIS HAND OF MINE GLOWS WITH AN AWESOME POWER
Thunder…! Thunder…! Thunder! THUNDERCATS!
HOOOOO!
Hadooken!
YYYEEEEEESSSSSS!
[dramatic japenese voice] Open the Gate!
Is Rachel about to evolve?
Now’s my chance, I’ll distract her with these fireflies, then punch her in the teeth.
Pocket sand!
COME AT ME, HO.
<— You are pissing me off now, ho.
Don’t smite me, ho!
Is that the Hi Pro-glow?
“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.”
SHO-NUFF! Rachel’s got The Glow!
Hmm. This is my prediction.
Years of watching professional wrestling have brought me this amazing power.
now if only they started a fight with each combatant’s theme music…
…now I’m curious as to which one was trained by Hulk Hogan… (I’m guessing Rachel. Frigg seems more, ah… UFC.)
I’m just waiting for their outer layers of clothes to fall off as they tumble into a conveniently located mud pit.
Poor E-Merl is going to miss out on an eyeful.
And at that point Best miraculously reappears to sing a song goading the ladies more and more into revealing their true nature. I’m caught up!!! YAAAYYY
spoiler, Frigg’s going to say, ‘goddammit Rachel, leave me alone!’
FALLLLLLLLCONNNNNNNN-
…well done. You’ve taken the Cat-Fight, and somehow De-sexified it. I guess I’ve got nothing left to live for. Except Fish Stick night…
Idk what you’re talking about sir. This is the hottest holy beat down I’ve seen in awhile. I know my holy mace isn’t having trouble smiting. lol
