Yeah, really. I am going out on a limb to suggest that mother is bedridden, or some such–will they plug her into the game and give her a second life? Will this motherly transformation win Shanna over to the side of HR (evil)? Stay tuned…

Not gonna happen. It shouldn’t be relevant to the plot here… but it is a part of Shanna’s backstory that seems to be consistent between universes.

Aha. Another thing the GAverse Shanna has in common with her Fans!verse counterpart: an institutionalized mother.

To be honest, I think the breakdown and institutionalization of Judith Cochran is as close as either Shanna gets to having an “origin story.” The term doesn’t entirely fit her, because she’s a lot more changeable as an adult than, say, Superman or Batman. Everything really important about them, you get in a few key scenes. Shanna in Fans is a very different creature in the start of Book I than she is by the start of Book II, who is almost as different again at the start of Book VI. Even Guilded Age Shanna, who obviously doesn’t get as much screen time, is already going through some pretty radical upheavals.

Still, Judith’s the keystone. Take away what happened to her, and just about everything about Shanna changes. I doubt she’d be in journalism, for one thing.

Meanwhile, in the P&Averse, we got a glimpse of Judith (albeit living on the street, not in an institution), but not Shanna. Interesting.

Just how many webcomic continuities is Shanna Cochran a part of?
Or is it a simple matter of she goes where you go?

Shanna’s shown up as a regular in two, Fans and GA, and other versions of her have had cameos in David Willis’ It’s Walky and Shaenon Garrity’s Narbonic. Those are the ones I know of offhand. There’s a lot of this sort of “alternate character stuff” going on in my work, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if another Carol shows up someday.

Heh… I remember the Alt-Universe Penny & Aggie that sorta got absorbed into the Fansverse. Not sure why that stands out as particularly memorable… but it does.

No trouble. Fans is my first comic, still located at http://faans.com. For the evolution of Shanna, you’re probably going to want to start at the start: http://www.faans.com/books1-6/index.php?p=1.

Or if you really just want a look at Judith’s first appearance, it’s at http://www.faans.com/books1-6/index.php?p=248 and http://www.faans.com/books1-6/index.php?p=249. Obviously this is a different world with different details, and Fans has a different tone overall than Guilded Age‘s Sepia scenes. But it might be a fun comparison, in any case.

Like most writers, I have a tough time looking at old work without dissecting it, but I’ll restrain myself this once.

If she’s not the same shanna…but look to her actions. this is someone who could be the SAME Shanna as the one in FANS!, she’s certainly showing the personal capability, and the reference back to a certain convention in the past…

I’m slowly warming up to Shanna, but these last few pages have been scaring me. Of course, she’s running for her life so I guess there probably aren’t going to be too many warm and genuine smiles in the near future.

No, he was suggesting that Shanna should spend more time with her mother, who is mentally ill, but not on life support.

To more fully state it, the doctor is suggesting that, if Shanna is moving, that she should take her mother with her, and maybe care for her on an in-house basis. Were Shanna simply moving, she probably would take her mom to a new care facility, if what we’ve seen of Shanna in general means anything.

Shanna’s pissed because the doctor is implying that Shanna is intentionally abandoning her mom, when the lady hasn’t got a choice in the matter – running is hard enough, running with a older, not entirely healthy, and entirely delusional, woman, is significantly harder.

I’m pretty sure you want an “or,” not an “and,” in that – Shanna probably isn’t the kind of person to suicide if there is another option…and killing all the bastards in self-defense is definitely another option! :)

Don’t worry he will make sure you find him in his basement when needs you for the right kind of sacrifice, in the meantime go ahead and run. Yeah now you know why mommy is batshit insane, and you have been stuck taking care of her.
