Well, Caneghem wouldn’t. He was only ever a reluctant ally of Gastonia and made his dissatisfaction loudly known.
I think the council’s reaction would be confusion and a demand for why they’d backpedal from their isolationism now. Because there had better be a very good reason for this. If not, there’d be a curt but professional refusal.
Caneghem doesn’t seem the sort to make frivolous demands or come back hat-in-hand. So it’s not going to happen. If nothing else, his pride would prevent him from working with Clair and the “Street Elves.” Sky Elves are just powerful enough independently that they can carve out their own niche, even if means being less-than-nice about it. (Conjuring is theft, but there’s no question they’re fully capable of it.)
I expected Caneghem to still be in charge of the sky elves, really. I mean, he was part of the conspiracy, but only to the extent that he ignored it because it was human bullshit and just he didn’t care.
Do you not remember Caneghem and most of the Sky Elves decided to just entirely relocate rather than deal with the Gastonia problem? Only a few dozen Sky Elves elected to stay and help.
No. The shit elves are the ones who flew off to live in total isolation. These are the earth elves. Or the high elves – because they’re definitely tops when it comes to morality, by comparison to the old farts they flipped the bird to by way of goodbye.
Crochety as he is, I did like Caneghem and sympathize with his motives. When it came down to it, he disliked Gastonian corruption and just wanted to stay out of the wars.
And if he’d been less selfish and cynical and more willing to help the Peacekeepers, he would be where Clair is now, and have what he told Syr’nj she was cruel for encouraging Reynolds to think he could ever have.
I find it hard to hold that against him seeing as how he never wanted Clair’s job. Then the selfsame Peacekeepers switched sides and then tried to tell him, “No, no, don’t worry, THIS time will be different.”
Hard sell. I think his just pulling up stakes and leaving was a reasonable response given the information he had.
The sky elf archmage never wanted to be the archmage? Or he wanted the title but not the responsibilities that went with it? One implausible, one inspires no sympathy from me.
Either way. Beyond that, I just checked his tag. It appears, unless some early tags were missed, he made his very first appearance as a Gastonian Head of House. You appear to have filled in a lot of details of his off-panel life and how he came to join the Altruists; that is, of course, something you have the right to do for your own reading, but when you’re talking about things that were not actually presented in the comic, you have to be prepared to get the answer “what I would fill in off-panel is radically different from what you’re asserting,” as you are here.
Firstly, Caneghem was always “Archmage” before he joined the Heads of House. In the same way that Reynolds was always Dean and Gobligno was always Don. He possessed the title long before he ever joined the House.
Secondly, this is all on-panel. You make it sound like Caneghem wants to be part of the coalition and have a seat in the House. He’s warned both Syr’nj and Reynolds that Gastonia. Even Iwatani noted that Caneghem did not care if he crowned himself king.
He was reluctantly persuaded to join the Gastonian coalition simply because he was persuaded that either World’s End or Gastonia would eventually develop the capability to invade their city. So they might as well side with Gastonia to head-off that possibility.
Well he tried that, and Iwatani was assassinated by his son. And then our heroes try to tell them that things will be better and different with the World’s End.
I can sympathize with Caneghem’s perspective here. That all looks very suspicious. Our main band of heroes look like they have fluid loyalties, so why would you trust them? Weren’t you telling us that the World’s End was the mutual enemy? And now they aren’t? Well that’s awfully convenient. And Gastonia has gotten taken over by a mad child king after his dad died under suspicious circumstances.
If you’re Caneghem, you already think the Gastonian humans are duplicitous, warlike and greedy. So none of that improves your opinion of your “allies.”
So no, he wants nothing to do with Clair’s coalition. She’s welcome to the seat in the House. He tried it her way, and as far as he knows, it didn’t work.
The four panels on the left side have the former World’s Rebellion races, and the right side the former Gastonian Alliance races.
Gastonia was two (or three, if wood elves weren’t generally playable, which they probably weren’t) races down from the World’s Rebellion the whole time, wasn’t it? That’s a kind of imbalance that’s kind of surprising in an MMORPG, but it makes sense when the game’s premise is that one of the factions is about one race’s perception of its manifest destiny.
Gastonia had 4. Humans, gnomes, sky elves and wood elves, the latter race introduced in the same expansion that made the fuzzy peoples a playable race for the rebel horde.
Humans might have technically counted as two races too, since there was apparently a differentiation between Gastonians and non-Gastonians, like Elder Scrolls with Imperials, Nords, Bretons, Redguards, etc.
First order of business, I propose that we start conspiring against each other until one day one of us (or our children) becomes the absolute ruler of Gastonia, do I hear any Aye?
I notice that the least well armored/fancy person in the room is our berserk? Maybe it’s a safety measure – if he goes nuts, it gives everyone else a better shot at taking him down at all?
Hmm, seeing Gondolessa again made me wonder about Rana. Hope we at least see or hear of what happened with him in the end. Whether he found closure or if it was too much for him to deal with…
I’m actually a little concerned about Clair. She looks… a Little too much like her Elder Predicessor. but War and Loss can Dim people’s outlook on life. Hopefully it’s not as bad as all that.
Governor Hackenslasher… I just love that name. I want to hear a name like that on the news someday.
“Today, Governor Hackenslasher signed a bill into law that would legalize the open carry of hatchets and swords for personal defense, citing the Second Amendment…”
And Do note where he’s Sitting. Next to Dean Reynolds. Essentially his Race’s *rival* race. I’d imagine he’s thinking quite a few unkind thoughts about that.
When did he do that? I know Ivar was judgemental about it. But I can’t remember Gobligno caring one way or another. He’s probably more displeased that his war profiteering is now over.
Yeah I see the main topics being rebuilding and more long term working to smooth over relations between all the races. You have an even more diverse range now then even the savage races had, and a populace on both sides that is coming out of a bitter war. Not to mention yeah various actions each side took against the other that may not be easily forgiven by the general populace. My guess is things won’t be perfect, but at least on a better track then they were before.
I hope Supreme Chancellor HAMMERHEAD makes an appearance.
Yes, I think he would love to be part of the executive department.
Honestly, that made me think of something.
If Caneghem and the Sky Elves decided to come back and say they wanted in on this, what should the Council say to them? Thoughts?
Er… ahem.
The last panel of http://guildedage.net/comic/chapter-47-page-12/ sums it up pretty well.
Yeah… That whole page is full of win. I especially love the jeering dancing by all in the last panel, as you pointed out.

You wouldn’t conjure a carriage.
Somebody call me?
… body shots?
Berserkerism shots. Gotta be ready in case someone tries to revive the Cult!
I wonder what’s making Clair more depressed. Death of her best friend or being a politician?
I thought he was her brother?
Both. :(
It’s the position. I mean, do you remember Caneghem?
I expected Caneghem to still be in charge of the sky elves, really. I mean, he was part of the conspiracy, but only to the extent that he ignored it because it was human bullshit and just he didn’t care.
Do you not remember Caneghem and most of the Sky Elves decided to just entirely relocate rather than deal with the Gastonia problem? Only a few dozen Sky Elves elected to stay and help.
If they didn’t come back when the war ended, then why do the sky elves have a representative on the council?
Hmm. Maybe Clair represents the shit elves too. Maybe the sky elves who stayed behind are just shit elves now.
No. The shit elves are the ones who flew off to live in total isolation. These are the earth elves. Or the high elves – because they’re definitely tops when it comes to morality, by comparison to the old farts they flipped the bird to by way of goodbye.
Considering their contributions to the war they earned that chair and maybe their infusion of magic can revive what the “shit” elves originally had.
Clair represents the City Elves, which is what her faction of Sky Elves call themselves, now, since they’re urban rather than airborne.
Crochety as he is, I did like Caneghem and sympathize with his motives. When it came down to it, he disliked Gastonian corruption and just wanted to stay out of the wars.

I never picked up that Canaghem had any proclivity for yarncraft.
And now the council is the leader of each race.
The four panels on the left side have the former World’s Rebellion races, and the right side the former Gastonian Alliance races.

And possibly 5 if shit elves count.
The way things are, you’d probably hear ‘Ugh, not *again*.
Or, maybe from Don G., ‘Not now’.
I notice that the least well armored/fancy person in the room is our berserk? Maybe it’s a safety measure – if he goes nuts, it gives everyone else a better shot at taking him down at all?
Berserkers eschew protection in favor of aggressive diplomacy.
He’s armed with a t-shirt, a feather and an inkwell.
And a chair and desk. The desk will likely serve as a shield.
You stop this circus right and tell me where in the bloody hell is the Champion of the Fuzzy Peoples before I flip a table!
He’s not ready to lead. Weo said so. I’m actually surprised Don Goblingo survived. I thought he was within reach of the corrupters.
He’s their champion, not their ruler. He’s busy saving the city from some other new threat.
Suplexing society’s problems for a brighter tomorrow, HYES!
With the comic winding down, this is the perfect time to announce The Adventures of the Fuzzy Peoples…
I picture him doing publicity stunts and photo ops for social causes. Like building schools or funding infrastructure for clean drinking water.
Hmm, seeing Gondolessa again made me wonder about Rana. Hope we at least see or hear of what happened with him in the end. Whether he found closure or if it was too much for him to deal with…
Oof, I want to know, too. And Bandit! And the cultist guy. Pretty sure he lived.
I’m actually a little concerned about Clair. She looks… a Little too much like her Elder Predicessor. but War and Loss can Dim people’s outlook on life. Hopefully it’s not as bad as all that.
Welcome to the New Republic!
…why does this sound so familiar?
Ooh, I’d be careful using the word “chart” when you’re at the head of a new government bureaucracy.
However, “shart” would be totally appropriate, no?
Governor Hackenslasher… I just love that name. I want to hear a name like that on the news someday.
“Today, Governor Hackenslasher signed a bill into law that would legalize the open carry of hatchets and swords for personal defense, citing the Second Amendment…”
Specializing in budget cuts, tax cuts, cuts to poverty and bureaucracy, and torsos. DEEP torso cuts.
You wound me, dear sir.
I will choose pen over sword.
Your words cut me deep.
Wait, is Penk in charge?
Is the new leader of Gastonia an orange-skinned, messy-haired troll that no one voted for?
Are we Making Gastonia Great Again?
I feel that does Penk a disservice. He’s actually useful, for one thing.
Yes…a serious disservice.
And he has military experience….
idk bout you guys, but its 42 here in minneapolis now. ive been ready for shorts!
As I posted above, “sharts” is appropo, even if shorts aren’t yet?
Your logic is scat…
“I call this council to order, lets us commence our proceedings with the ceremonial consumption of a bottle of scotch.”
The council doesn’t get a lot done, but they have some really entertaining meetings!
I think that Scotch has the prerequisite of a Scotland.
Clair’s makeup and not-wide-open eyes make her look like an entirely different person.
And Sir Groff is the CUTEST! ^_^
F no, I don’t want to end this with an HR avatar!
And that’s a little too upset…
Nnnnn— hmmmmm. That’s kinda good actually. I shall go out with a Shan.
First red flag:
Don
Goblino’s
*fucking*
_FACE_
He’s the only member of the council who isn’t friends with all the others, so it’s not surprising that he’s grouchy.
And Do note where he’s Sitting. Next to Dean Reynolds. Essentially his Race’s *rival* race. I’d imagine he’s thinking quite a few unkind thoughts about that.
Hey, can he help it if he has resting orcface?
Well, he’s seated next to Gondolessa. And has already made known his disapproval of Gondolessa’s lifestyle choices.
When did he do that? I know Ivar was judgemental about it. But I can’t remember Gobligno caring one way or another. He’s probably more displeased that his war profiteering is now over.
Yeah, last time we saw Gobligno and Gondoleza together, Gobby was sucking up to Gondie.
He seems to be glaring at Reynolds, Syr, or Gravy – the fact that Gravy is looking in that direction suggests him.
In every war, the orcs always lose.
Claire’s gone kinda goth-y and thats cool.
But yeah, wonder if the council will have to deal with the whole Orc enslavement deal, and the maurauding landshark horde.
Yeah I see the main topics being rebuilding and more long term working to smooth over relations between all the races. You have an even more diverse range now then even the savage races had, and a populace on both sides that is coming out of a bitter war.
