Honestly, that made me think of something.

If Caneghem and the Sky Elves decided to come back and say they wanted in on this, what should the Council say to them? Thoughts?

Well, Caneghem wouldn’t. He was only ever a reluctant ally of Gastonia and made his dissatisfaction loudly known.

I think the council’s reaction would be confusion and a demand for why they’d backpedal from their isolationism now. Because there had better be a very good reason for this. If not, there’d be a curt but professional refusal.

Caneghem doesn’t seem the sort to make frivolous demands or come back hat-in-hand. So it’s not going to happen. If nothing else, his pride would prevent him from working with Clair and the “Street Elves.” Sky Elves are just powerful enough independently that they can carve out their own niche, even if means being less-than-nice about it. (Conjuring is theft, but there’s no question they’re fully capable of it.)

If they didn’t come back when the war ended, then why do the sky elves have a representative on the council?

Hmm. Maybe Clair represents the shit elves too. Maybe the sky elves who stayed behind are just shit elves now.

No. The shit elves are the ones who flew off to live in total isolation. These are the earth elves. Or the high elves – because they’re definitely tops when it comes to morality, by comparison to the old farts they flipped the bird to by way of goodbye.

Crochety as he is, I did like Caneghem and sympathize with his motives. When it came down to it, he disliked Gastonian corruption and just wanted to stay out of the wars.

And if he’d been less selfish and cynical and more willing to help the Peacekeepers, he would be where Clair is now, and have what he told Syr’nj she was cruel for encouraging Reynolds to think he could ever have.

I find it hard to hold that against him seeing as how he never wanted Clair’s job. Then the selfsame Peacekeepers switched sides and then tried to tell him, “No, no, don’t worry, THIS time will be different.”

Hard sell. I think his just pulling up stakes and leaving was a reasonable response given the information he had.

The sky elf archmage never wanted to be the archmage? Or he wanted the title but not the responsibilities that went with it? One implausible, one inspires no sympathy from me.

Either way. Beyond that, I just checked his tag. It appears, unless some early tags were missed, he made his very first appearance as a Gastonian Head of House. You appear to have filled in a lot of details of his off-panel life and how he came to join the Altruists; that is, of course, something you have the right to do for your own reading, but when you’re talking about things that were not actually presented in the comic, you have to be prepared to get the answer “what I would fill in off-panel is radically different from what you’re asserting,” as you are here.

Firstly, Caneghem was always “Archmage” before he joined the Heads of House. In the same way that Reynolds was always Dean and Gobligno was always Don. He possessed the title long before he ever joined the House.

Secondly, this is all on-panel. You make it sound like Caneghem wants to be part of the coalition and have a seat in the House. He’s warned both Syr’nj and Reynolds that Gastonia. Even Iwatani noted that Caneghem did not care if he crowned himself king.

He was reluctantly persuaded to join the Gastonian coalition simply because he was persuaded that either World’s End or Gastonia would eventually develop the capability to invade their city. So they might as well side with Gastonia to head-off that possibility.

Well he tried that, and Iwatani was assassinated by his son. And then our heroes try to tell them that things will be better and different with the World’s End.

I can sympathize with Caneghem’s perspective here. That all looks very suspicious. Our main band of heroes look like they have fluid loyalties, so why would you trust them? Weren’t you telling us that the World’s End was the mutual enemy? And now they aren’t? Well that’s awfully convenient. And Gastonia has gotten taken over by a mad child king after his dad died under suspicious circumstances.

If you’re Caneghem, you already think the Gastonian humans are duplicitous, warlike and greedy. So none of that improves your opinion of your “allies.”

So no, he wants nothing to do with Clair’s coalition. She’s welcome to the seat in the House. He tried it her way, and as far as he knows, it didn’t work.

And now the council is the leader of each race.

The four panels on the left side have the former World’s Rebellion races, and the right side the former Gastonian Alliance races.

Gastonia was two (or three, if wood elves weren’t generally playable, which they probably weren’t) races down from the World’s Rebellion the whole time, wasn’t it? That’s a kind of imbalance that’s kind of surprising in an MMORPG, but it makes sense when the game’s premise is that one of the factions is about one race’s perception of its manifest destiny.

Humans might have technically counted as two races too, since there was apparently a differentiation between Gastonians and non-Gastonians, like Elder Scrolls with Imperials, Nords, Bretons, Redguards, etc.

Yeah I see the main topics being rebuilding and more long term working to smooth over relations between all the races. You have an even more diverse range now then even the savage races had, and a populace on both sides that is coming out of a bitter war. Not to mention yeah various actions each side took against the other that may not be easily forgiven by the general populace. My guess is things won’t be perfect, but at least on a better track then they were before.
