Just under 8 and 3/4 years. Early September 2009. Which, if I’m doing the calculation right, puts the ending tomorrow, rather than either today or Friday, so either it’s not EXACTLY 3200 days, or I’ve screwed up the calculation…
It’s funny, I’ve been reading this comic since the very beginning, although I didn’t comment for the longest time. I hadn’t realize that I started reading this comic around the same time Champions Online launched. Ten years goes by so quickly.
An eyeblink and an eternity. Time is a peculiar thing, long in the unfolding, but swift in the passing. Seeming straight, but bent, perhaps curving back on itself.
I wasn’t here for all of those days, just most of them. I had done a special “surprise guest page” for Thanksgiving, which turned out to be my own “demo reel” you might say. Phil and T liked it. They were looking for someone to fill Erica’s shoes, and I was looking for something to do, so…
I started on chapter 8 page 5, November 30, 2010. That page went up on Dec. 6th. It was a Monday. And it looks like I’ll be finishing on a Friday. Appropriate. ;-)
I remember your surprise guest page ( http://guildedage.net/comic/guest-page-john-waltrip ) as if it had been last week. You used Mont St. Michel as a reference. Thanks for the great (almost) eight years!
Even if it kills him. Maybe even more so – to die doing the thing you love most, in the sea, at the helm of your own ship, fighting against impossible odds… Even if dear admiral shall perish, he will go in blaze of glory, leaving a legend behind. Not many people even in his world can mark that on their bucket list.
He’s going to be killed by the monster he neglected to contribute to the defeat of back when he was in charge of the Navy. Can’t be a proper Karma Houdini if you die to poetic justice.
Plus nobody will know what happened to him. If Gralor destroys the ship, he and the sailors of that ship will be lost to the inky depths with no one the wiser…
…that is unless of course Rendar’s ship happens to spot the fight and decide to intervene.
In my mind’s eye I picture Best playing some beast charming tunes to calm Gralor down. And then once, Gralor leaves, the airship crew flips the admiral the bird and flies away.
Braggadocio would definitely attack Gralor. When they were talking to Byron about leaving, Braggadocio’s mental image had him fighting just such a beast. And it would certainly help restore his appetite.
Presuming this is not a patrol armada; nobody knows where they went – basically, if he commandeered the ship; Rendar’s crew is composed of blind, deaf degenerats; nobody beside Rendar and co is watching him right now – which, given discrepancy between his previous career and policy stand, and his current placement behind the helm of the ship, however disciplinary of a task it may be, is more than likely; and, if Gralgor sinks the admiral before proposed intervention, Best shows himself as complete unrepentant arsehole.
Then he would become a character of a cautionary tale – a saga of sorts. Like, say, Beowulf, or Gilgamesh. And ‘The Fall of Annunziata’ would be recited by hundreds of generations.
Fair enough. I had the impression it was something else. But that was just wishful thinking on my part. I tend to associate the yellow glow with Rachel. ;-)
“Stop eating my ship!!”
“Wha-? ‘Eating?’ ‘Ship?’ We’re making out here! Mind your own business, this is private!! (C’mon, Baby… Let’s ditch these barnacles.)”
The next is the last? Really??? D: I was enjoying all the follow-ups! I still, for SOME REASON, wanna know about Rana, and Weo, and godammit, Best’s grave is still confusing me!
Everybody wants to be a shark
because a shark’s the only shark
who’ll eat any carc-
ass
Everybody’s grabbing on to the same sirloin
while kicking each other in the groin
A shark with a horn
makes you wish you weren’t born
everytime he plays
And with a bone in his throat
from the leg of a goat
he’ll make anybody deaf for days
I heard some feral wolves who tried to howl
Still, a shark’s the only shark
who knows how to growl
Who wants to hunt with a bite that’s tamer than the bark
when everybody wants to be a shark?
This has been a truly excellent adventure — true to the gamer culture, true to hardboiled noir mysteries, and true to the strangely gentle ethics at the heart of some of the most violent games.
I’m going to miss the odd symmetry of Gravedust and Frigg most, I think.
Well done, authors and artists. I fully agree with Lirazel. You did an amazing job, with full stories, character development, unique art and character design. 10/10, would read again! :)
3200 days?
It’s been about 3,198 or so as of today.

It started on September 4th 2009, so adding 3200 days to thay comes to June 8th 2018.
The end is near.
*sob*

I’m not crying, you’re crying!
Ah, so I did do the calculation wrong.
*starts panicking* o_O

Guys, LEAP DAYS.
Hrmn. Annunziata’s a bit of a Karma houdini here.
Not if Gralor kills him.
Even if it kills him. Maybe even more so – to die doing the thing you love most, in the sea, at the helm of your own ship, fighting against impossible odds… Even if dear admiral shall perish, he will go in blaze of glory, leaving a legend behind. …that is unless of course Rendar’s ship happens to spot the fight and decide to intervene.
If they intervened, would it be on Annunziata’s side or on Gralor’s?
In my mind’s eye I picture Best playing some beast charming tunes to calm Gralor down. And then once, Gralor leaves, the airship crew flips the admiral the bird and flies away.

Too much presumptions for my taste.
Then he would become a character of a cautionary tale – a saga of sorts. Like, say, Beowulf, or Gilgamesh. And ‘The Fall of Annunziata’ would be recited by hundreds of generations.
I just realized that Webmetz called this: http://guildedage.net/comic/ask-an-adventurer-life-at-sea-is-preferable/ .
(Do a find on the comment section for “kraken”.)
Even if it does at least he outlasted the rest of his peers.
It somehow warms the cockles of my heart that he’s out there living a life of adventure, like he always said he wanted to.
That first panel is one heck of a character callback.
Hmm, I could’ve sworn those two also showed up around Fightopia, but the tags don’t show them there.
Aha, I’m right! They’re just tagged Emory and Henry there. http://guildedage.net/comic/chapter-23-page-1/
They were going through a phase at the time, metaphorically speaking
Look, up in the sky!
Kobolds!
Home~
Music?
Life
Seaaaaaaa
No, wait, it’s almost…
Oh, the sharks. Right. They existed…
Ye gods, they discovered music. THEY’RE LEARNING! RUN!
The Jaws theme isn’t going to invent itself, you know.
Gralor!!!
Oh and HAMMERHEAD! I asked for him the other day. And what’s he doing? Eating. Of course he is. It would be newsworthy if he WEREN’T eating.
Om Nom Nom
I’m curious as to WHAT he’s eating.
I’m curious to WHO he’s eating…
My question preCISEly!
Now if someone were eating him, THAT would be newsworthy.
I can’t expect all loose ends to be resolved, but I hope we see what happened to Rana.
I want to see what was the glow Bandit was seeing in her last panel.
The sun.
Fair enough. I had the impression it was something else. But that was just wishful thinking on my part. I tend to associate the yellow glow with Rachel. ;-)
Silly land sharks, you can’t devour music.
Someone obviously hasn’t been watching the Family-Ness.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaCzbqdFS24
I think the land sharks are developing a bit of their own culture, I don’t recall them having any interest in music before.
I can almost imagine HAMMERHEAD’s become lost among his own people.
…But I don’t want it to end.
All good things must come to an end.
…so better things have a chance to begin.
Alright, you all heard it here folks, Better Things were promised!
XD
Yeah, we still haven’t seen a spin-off featuring Goblaurance and Auraugu Goes to White Castle.
Yar, squiddy. I got nothing against ya but I heard there was diamonds in yer belly.
It’s been a great ride, folks.
yes…
yes it has.
So the next page will be the last? I’m going to miss this comic, but I must say I have enjoyed every bit of the ride. :D

So the comic ends with Gungier and Avidro?
what an adventure it has been ♥
