This game title comes up a lot here in the comments. Besides what sounds like remarkable similarities between it and GA in terms of plot… is it a good game?
Still, the story was very good, and honestly, I never saw the twist coming. Much like with Guilded Age, it basically blind-sided me and came out of nowhere.
its actually one of my favorites. i loved the item creation. also, the battles are avoidable by avoiding the map sprite, and the fights are action based, unlike a lot of RPGs. which means a bit of skill and strategy can get you through with minimal grinding.
It was decent, but had many faults, including the previously mentioned item creation system. What I mainly didn’t like about it, though, was the structure of the plot. It’s a two-disc game, so you’d think the plot would be fairly involved. Actually, they reveal just enough to hook you in the first hour or so of gameplay, and then the whole thing gets completely derailed. The result is that most of disc 1 feels like a long and kind of irrelevant detour while you’re playing it. It later becomes apparent that disc 1 exists primarily so that the protagonist’s actions in it can serve as a ridiculously overextended analogy for something his dad did. By the time the plot gets back on track, there’s not a lot of game left.
Might be too early to call that. After all, she left the question hanging for the next strip. For all we know, he could answer with, “No, of course not. Don’t be stupid,” and then explain.
I am most interested in how the sculpture analogy fits with the multiple-universe theory. What did HR remove from Arkerra to make it compatible with his virtual reality simulation?
Yeah, we noticed that the Green pod seemed empty, but that didn’t make sense because we think it’s Syrn’j’s pod. It was especially odd because yellow, which we’re fairly sure is Best’s was still occupied.
This may put a dampner on my theory of Best and Bandit being the same “player”.
Then again, the reason he’s still in the same state as the other is due to the fact that he -is- Bandit now. But then again (Yeah, second “Then again”) H.R. would most likely know of it if that was the case.
What if he’s running BOTH and they don’t know it?
Now that Best has departed it might explain how Bandit survived since her body wasn’t buried like the others… for all we know…
The points tally in favour of H.R. being Bandit. As for the world being really real? I doubt it. I think Best’s player is just creating an alternate dimension/afterlife in his dreamstate. I think H.R. would be pretty frightened of the idea that players can create a world in his system, just by mere thought.
I’d been thinking that Bandit was Carol, but it looks like Daedalus has been at the workstation for an extended period of time — consistent with his playing Bandit — but Carol seems to have been away from the keyboard for at least the previous scene.
The book was very well written actually. Kinda like this, takes place in a game and has elements of the real world. Made me look at World of Warcraft in a different light (since yatzee based the novel on his time playing WoW)
Oh. It’s THIS guy again. I don’t like this guy. He’s so boring. And brown. He’s boring me with his monotone existence. Go away, Monotone Man. I want more of the colorful tube people!
Of course “Just as real as our own” could be going the other way as well. It could be implying that the world they are in isn’t real. That it also is a game, or…or…some sort of visual entertainment for the masses.
My internet’s been down for like 5 days (the horror… 0.o) and when I finally came back online and went to check out GA I thought the last two strips were jokes or really, really elaborate guest strips.
From the mysterious, shadowy C.E.O dabbling in forbidden “sciencemancy” H.R had turned into an unshaven “guy” sitting down, eating chips and waiting for Frigg to say something funny and both he and Carol were being all verbose and up close. Seemed so uncharacteristic.
Now that the daze of my “logging on sickness” has passed I feel a bit more at peace. An interesting development (though not an unexpected one) and it’s nice to see Carol’s lovely visage in full bloom so to speak.
I’ll send you my ISP’s address (the “street” one, like an actual place you can go to) so the next time they decide to fuck with me you can pay them a visit and give their asses a good friggin’.
Dum dum dum….theory is right….the world exsistants…bang! Also..Scorpio guy is probabbly Arkerra’s godly overlord with that awsome cigar
Does that mean there’s some guy in arkerra looking into a screen watching some other guy looking into a screen watching HR and his secretary?
HADOKEN!
Oopsie.
anyone play star ocean: till the end of time?
… Mind = Blown.
I got to that point in the game and kinda stopped playing then. I can;t remember why
Dunno, but given my own experience I’d wager it was the item creation system. :\
This game title comes up a lot here in the comments. Besides what sounds like remarkable similarities between it and GA in terms of plot… is it a good game?
It’s similar to Final Fantasy in many aspects. I like it, although I never finished it.
Well, it is made by Square Enix… they don’t rock the boat in terms of game format.
Still, the story was very good, and honestly, I never saw the twist coming. Much like with Guilded Age, it basically blind-sided me and came out of nowhere.
its actually one of my favorites. i loved the item creation. also, the battles are avoidable by avoiding the map sprite, and the fights are action based, unlike a lot of RPGs. which means a bit of skill and strategy can get you through with minimal grinding.
well, i was AFRAID this plot twist was coming. but when it did i decided that i would keep reading….
I never made it to the twist. I thought it was alright, honestly, but not as good as the previous Star Ocean games.
It was decent, but had many faults, including the previously mentioned item creation system. What I mainly didn’t like about it, though, was the structure of the plot. It is an utterly atrocious game. So terrible.
I know someone called it.
I wonder if she’s going to quit on H.R. for playing with/possibly murdering real people like this. Up until now, she thought it was a game.
…I wonder if Best will end up in a cyberpunk universe and end up with an AR axe with a laser blade. :|a
Might be too early to call that. After all, she left the question hanging for the next strip. For all we know, he could answer with, “No, of course not. Don’t be stupid,” and then explain.
True enough.
I hope HR doesn’t do that. I rather like the idea of the multiple world theory as opposed to the stuck in a video game theory.
I am most interested in how the sculpture analogy fits with the multiple-universe theory. What did HR remove from Arkerra to make it compatible with his virtual reality simulation?
Nobodies died yet, even Best.
ohey the tanks are backwards. The chairs and screens are on the other side from the spell book. right.
Whew, the green pod is still infact occupied. Existential crisis averted.
Why is the green pod significant? Isn’t that the one with Syrn’j in it?
Yeah, we noticed that the Green pod seemed empty, but that didn’t make sense because we think it’s Syrn’j’s pod. It was especially odd because yellow, which we’re fairly sure is Best’s was still occupied.
Phil said John forgot to draw it in and it would’ve been a pain to edit her in.
…Huh. My little avatar’s different on my laptop. :|a
VINDICATION!!!!
“I’m not a God, I just like to Play God.”
I’m just borrowing this universe from the guy down the hall.
*Kratos walks in*
“Damn it Hank, I told you to stop paying with my stuff!”
“No, hold on, he’s just having a stroke.”
This may put a dampner on my theory of Best and Bandit being the same “player”.
Then again, the reason he’s still in the same state as the other is due to the fact that he -is- Bandit now. But then again (Yeah, second “Then again”) H.R. would most likely know of it if that was the case.
*Brain starts melting*
What if he’s running BOTH and they don’t know it?
Now that Best has departed it might explain how Bandit survived since her body wasn’t buried like the others… for all we know…
In the meantime, Syr’Nj makes pink lemonade in her lab.
I’m pretty sure that what she’s mixing up there is actually the Medieval Fantasy equivalent of Pepto-Bismal…
“Only You Can Save Mankind” brought to a higher level
Brain…hurts…arrrgh!
The points tally in favour of H.R. being Bandit. As for the world being really real? I doubt it. I think Best’s player is just creating an alternate dimension/afterlife in his dreamstate. I think H.R. would be pretty frightened of the idea that players can create a world in his system, just by mere thought.
Could he have made it into a different MMORPG?
And then Best was hacked by gold farmers.
I’d been thinking that Bandit was Carol, but it looks like Daedalus has been at the workstation for an extended period of time — consistent with his playing Bandit — but Carol seems to have been away from the keyboard for at least the previous scene.
Obviously Best did some wallhacks and found his way into the expansion zones.
Well then. I’m stuck between thinking this is like Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, and Mogworld. Maybe a mix of both.
There are apparently a lot of RPGs I need to play.
Mogworld is a book by Yahtzee of Zero Punctuation. :P
Shows what I know.
I’m not sure I could read a book without proper punctuation though.
The book was very well written actually. Kinda like this, takes place in a game and has elements of the real world. Made me look at World of Warcraft in a different light (since yatzee based the novel on his time playing WoW)
It’s supposed to be satirical. I’ve been keeping an eye out, but I haven’t picked up a copy yet.
You should read Matthew Stover’s /Heroes Die/ too.
This revelation seemed to have opened her eyes.
Now we’re just waiting for an event so shocking it opens his mouth.
Gold Star.
I’m getting Tad William’s Otherland series.
*waits patiently for Dread*
I’m betting on cultists.
What I want to know is, how did you get William H. Macy to play H.R.? That’s a casting coup right there.
I’ve been noticing that myself!
Starts to look a lot like “Avatar” to me… :-)
…and why I have a Best Avatar? I want a Byron (or a Scipio) one….
We all can’t be winners, champ.
Anyway, most people would be proud to have the Best avatar.
What if we are all just players of a game, and our real world is full of magic and elves?
… rather likely. our world is digital, not analog, you know.
Oh. It’s THIS guy again. I don’t like this guy. He’s so boring. And brown. He’s boring me with his monotone existence. Go away, Monotone Man. I want more of the colorful tube people!
Best is now keeping the pimp hand strong in the GA version of Hello Kitty Online Adventure.
PROTIP: In the alt-text, T and Phil are talking about themselves.
Why the peace symbol on the panel of our dear berserker in the first panel? Last I remember, that symbol was connected to Syrn’j…hmm.
Just realized H.R. has ‘Syr’Nj’ profile on under the main screen.
That makes more sense. Here I assumed the smiling face was Byron.
The green Peace sign kinda gives it away.
Of course “Just as real as our own” could be going the other way as well. It could be implying that the world they are in isn’t real. That it also is a game, or…or…some sort of visual entertainment for the masses.
Naaah, that’s silly.
Number of the Beast by Heinlein, anyone?
Very compelling page. Just reading this single page, I have decided to read the rest of the comic. Well one, good sir. Well done.
So if Best got sent to the Void, does that mean Exdeath is involved?
http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/7586/bitcheslovethevoid.jpg
Best isn’t in Arkerra anymore. So maybe now he needs to Escape From Cyberia.
http://guildedage.net/webcomic/chapter-9/chapter-9-page-6/

Welcome back, Jean-Luc. Your absence was noticed, and shan’t be tolerated again.
I’ll send you my ISP’s address (the “street” one, like an actual place you can go to) so the next time they decide to fuck with me you can pay them a visit and give their asses a good friggin’.
Have you read Heroes Die? A great series that takes a similar premise and then runs it into the ground in the later books
So who is in the silver colored tube?
I now feel sorry for everyone that stopped reading before this point because of the “just a game” implication.
There are so many walls in this that I fear what will happen whenever they take one down…
