HELLO! The guy used the words “Northport Docks” and “three”. The word three is not directly connected to the word insurgents. Now, can anyone think of someTHING else that might come into port and that there might be three of.
Huh. I didn’t think of that, but now that you mentioned it, it seems perfectly plausible. Maybe he was raised by dwarves, and is now their inside man? He certainly has that carrot hair. ;-)
I wouldn’t read too much into the name given that there’s just too many places you can go with it. Scorpions aren’t generally considered nice creatures but between the zodiac and Scipio Africanus this guy just may be aloof but fair in his dealings. That, and we’ve already got an arrogant guy named Best and a bandit named Bandit, so hopefully we’re not going to be introducing Smarmy Smarmerson next.
I think panel 3 is full of ominous foreshadowing. That squirrel will harbor a grudge for that time he was startled and almost dropped his acorn, going on to gather up an army of adorable woodland creatures and lead them to devastating victory over the human[oid]s!
Also, sudden dislike for Scipio, what-ho? I don’t agree that he’s instigating. I think he doesn’t trust Bandit very much. Which of course makes perfect sense.
I think if any of the “new crew” are dumb, it’s Rachel; Scipio might be the smartest of them.
I still wonder if these “new crew” are elaborately well-programmed AI, or if they are a new crop of test players…
I was wondering if in some bizarre twist they’re some of the the heroes’ original player characters, now on some form of autopilot or under H.R.’s control. I know that’s a stretch.
I would immediately believe that if the EEG signals had not shown the resurrections so clearly. If they simply had respawned as different characters it would not explain the carefully aligned offsets of the onsets, I guess.
I like Rachel the least, but, really, for me, this is the opposite scenario of when Campbell introduced a slew of new characters to “Fans”. Then, I only liked a few of the “new guard”. However, I came to like them all to some degree over time, so, for those on the fence, unless Phil and T. plan to feed them all to the wolves right away, maybe something similar will happen here, and these characters will become more and more affable as the plot goes on.
That said, Raeg (Scipio) is my favorite. His real name that Phil and T. gave him is pretty cool, too, but I really wish he had remained “The Man With No Name” so I could use my nickname for him all the time.
Like any good tank, Scipio is merely keeping tabs on the entire group, good situational awareness and all that. stirring things up a little is just his way of investigating what peoples intentions are. or I could be reading this all wrong in which case my point is moot.
“Guess we’ll have to keep gaining experience…” is the closest I’ve seen to a metagame reference from one of the protagonists in quite a while. It has the form of a dedicated roleplayer’s trying to put an in-character wrapper around a metagame problem.
Hmm. So far, we’ve had Birdserker, Lone Crab, and now Squirrel Nutkick. Two more, and we can have an all-animal team. Birdserker is obviously the fighter, and Nutkick is the rogue. Perhaps Crabby is the mage? And what of clerics? Will we see Rabbi Rabbit next?
trying to figure out how Scipio is stirring things up. Bandit told him abuncha stuff she probably shouldnt and he said “Guess we’ll have to earn their trust” and then makes a deadpan joke about how it was probably easier in life just being a thief.
I really don’t understand how Scipio is “stirring things up”. To me, he seems to just be trying to figure out why Bandit isn’t hanging with the old crew, Bandit is just taking it further by herself.
Bandit brought the new team together and organized everything. It’s only natural that Scipio would see her as a leader — and wonder why the newcomers weren’t treating her as such.
Stirring things up? Scipio’s a team player, smart enough to see that something’s going on that he doesn’t know about, and discrete about how he asks the question.
So the savage races have sent “three” to the docks.
But three WHAT? Three orcs? Three trolls? Three BATTALIONS of orcs and/or trolls? Three of those dinosaur-mounted war platforms (as seen here: http://guildedage.net/webcomic/chapter-12/chapter-12-page-11/ )?
Well he did mention guerilla insurgents. Guerilla suggests a small and non-regular unit, usually meant for sneak attacks and sabotage. Insurgents would hint that they have been there for awhile disguised as non combatants or otherwise seemingly harmless wouldn’t it?
Eh, the terms in D&D were named such so that they could be referred to directly in game without going of character…with the exception of the term “levels” ..there used to be an actual name for those. Nothing wrong to say you need more experience. The post-9/11 buzzwords though…Egh. At least, I’ve heard worse instances, like the entirety of Avatar.
I believe what he is referring to is the fact that ‘Guerrilla insurgents’ is an entirely redundant phrase, which no respectable media outlet would have used in the recent past, but which modern-day mainstream US media, oriented as it is towards the lowest denominator who would benefit from the repetition, is quite fond of. Guerrilla and Insurgent are after all more or less synonyms, are they not?
Well something I just realized. They are going to a port, assumably a port neart water, assumably water containing something we saw on the coverart for this chapter.
#OccupyGastonia
This is excellent.
*gasp* A “solo” adventure with Bandit, Scipio, Rachel, and E-Merl?
I love you all so much right now.
P.S. Panel Three is full of win and lolz.
I’d be surprised if Bandit’s face didn’t become a gravatar.
SQUIRREL!
I’m surprised Bandit was surprised by a huffing-puffing messenger.
The “mystery” she’s thinking about must be really knocking her off her game.
Only three insurgents? Do I need to say it?
IT’S A TRAP!!!
No dude, it’s totally just three insurgents.
This is totally legit.
Totally
Legit.
Well, it could be three REALLY TOUGH insurgents. (These are the savage races after all. Don’t they have like, axe-headed rapasoroususes or something?)
Or maybe he meant like, three warships or something.
I’m getting that vibe too. On one level, I hope I’m wrong – we just met this new party – but on another level, a little intrigue is always welcome.
HELLO! The guy used the words “Northport Docks” and “three”. The word three is not directly connected to the word insurgents. Now, can anyone think of someTHING else that might come into port and that there might be three of.
I like Big Swordy Cigar Guy more and more.
Every group needs a Deadpan Snarker, and i think he’s it.
And I like him less and less. He seems to be stirring up shit for the sake of stirring up shit.
Yeah i don’t trust him either. His motif of scopions remind of the aesop of the frog and the scopion. his name literally Mean sscorpion. Suspicious.
Huh. I didn’t think of that, but now that you mentioned it, it seems perfectly plausible. Maybe he was raised by dwarves, and is now their inside man? He certainly has that carrot hair. ;-)
He’s inscipid
Gold Star.
while he is secretive, I think its for the good of the group, probably a secret with Bandit.

I do not like Scipio. He’s so condescending, smug and smarmy and I’d really prefer it if something lobbed an arm of his off. (Perhaps two.)
What, Harki, why are you posting comments here?
Ominous foreshadowing? Is that you?
god Bandit is cute in panel 2 <3
Quick, let us race to the savages! Surge to the Insurgents, Dock to the Northp….okay that last one doesn't work
I forsee doom…Best is clearly leading this attacking “guild”.
I think panel 3 is full of ominous foreshadowing. That squirrel will harbor a grudge for that time he was startled and almost dropped his acorn, going on to gather up an army of adorable woodland creatures and lead them to devastating victory over the human[oid]s!
Oh, also the squirrel is Dedalus’ alt.
I like the squirrel too!
Also, sudden dislike for Scipio, what-ho? I don’t agree that he’s instigating. I think he doesn’t trust Bandit very much. Which of course makes perfect sense.

I think all the other characters besides the main ones are actually real people from the universe that Daedalus accidently tapped into.
Like any good tank, Scipio is merely keeping tabs on the entire group, good situational awareness and all that. stirring things up a little is just his way of investigating what peoples intentions are. or I could be reading this all wrong in which case my point is moot.
And I thought he was going to scream, “They’re after me lucky charms!”

Panel 1, the studs look like nipples. I’m sorry, but the people deserve to know.
He’s wearing Schumacher Brand Armor ™.
scipio: thers nothing wrong with a little JUSTICE
Bandit: there is when it’s served up by a man wearing IRON NIPPLES!
reference:
Working as intended.

Phil and T. are prepping for their special “Animal Arkerra Avengers!” special.
I saw a mudcrab the other day.
Nasty little things. I try to avoid them when I can.
(repeat ad nauseam)
did you hear that the wizards are holding a boycott of imperial goods?
Oh, yeah, and it’s obvious that Scipio is Dedalus’ alt.
trying to figure out how Scipio is stirring things up. Bandit told him abuncha stuff she probably shouldnt and he said “Guess we’ll have to earn their trust” and then makes a deadpan joke about how it was probably easier in life just being a thief.
Like his namesake, Scipio’s kind of a prick.
A neutral prick. The best kind.

I must admit, I’d have preferred “Grab y’r saddles an’ let’s Skedaddles!”
So the savage races have sent “three” to the docks.

Maybe there was a miscommunication and he meant to say three Gorilla insurgents.
That would change the tactics a bit.
Or maybe when he said ‘Thuh, thuh, thuh, three’, he meant 3,333.
armored gorillas!?
truly terryfying
Guerrilla Insurgents? *siiigh*
I like that you choose that to sigh at, rather than “we need to gain more experience”
Eh, the terms in D&D were named such so that they could be referred to directly in game without going of character…with the exception of the term “levels” ..there used to be an actual name for those. Do you think that maybe, just MAYBE, you are reading too much into it?
I think he may just mean that the terms have been so saturated in the media that it’s sort of a drag to hear them, regardless of intent.
Airbender or Aliens?
Post 9/11 buzzwords? Sir I think a decade of coverage of the Contras would like to have a word with you.
I don’t trust the word of any gnome who whispers into his hat.
Sir Keebler needs to calm the hell down.
So are the new guys going to get cast page entries, or will they be dead too soon for that to matter?
Well something I just realized. They are going to a port, assumably a port neart water, assumably water containing something we saw on the coverart for this chapter.
tentacles!
hopefully they yell “surprise!” before engaging in anything….
