I thought the whole subtle FIRST! shout via first letters of words or other steganographic schemes was quite classy. But sometimes those who do get it just get a nice chuckle from it, while those who don’t get it are the ones who comment.

I can kind of respect calling first – if it’s artfully done, is topical, and does more than just announce your overzealous punctuality. But next time, you have to include the exclamation mark :)

Personally, I don’t mind “first” comments… especially if they piss off the same crowd that likes to re-use the same stale old puns over and over again like they honestly believe they’re being clever. Honestly, I don’t like puns at all, but some folk at least put the effort in to be original… while others just parrot back the same crap ad nauseum.
Compared to that… someone shouting “FIRST!” at the top of the page is actually funny.

That’s a good excuse for this story to include the trope of “Obligatory Tavern Brawl for No Good Reason” into the plot.

It’s the same reason why pirates are dashing instead of frightening and why stealing is cute instead of despicable. Not to mention how war is fun and heroic. Fantasy has always twisted these things.

To people who deal with serious violence for a living (or just as part of daily life), pub fights are basically sport. The rule is not to do so much damage to people or property that your favorite pub goes out of business. Dojos, boxing clubs etc are for nobles and merchants. (I play in an Irish pub band so this is a familiar subject :)

At first glance, this kind of throws me because I’m used to Byron as the serious leader type.

Then I look back at his first appearance and go “Wait, yeah, this fits.” I guess the weight of the responsibility was too large for him to handle and be at ease.

Yeah, it’s a big burden off Byron’s shoulders to be held responsible for a tavern brawl now that Bandit’s taken up the leadership mantle. Its a big responsibility for such petite shoulders to bear…
