That explains who the thought bubbles were from, as well as how those things move.

Though their planning to kill Rachel makes me wonder if they all think Byron’s ‘Berzerker’ name is just for show, too.

Why… did Bert knock over his own machine? I’ve been confused since this chapter started, really.

Clearly he was just bluffing to get them to retreat.

That is, however, an excellent comment to icon combination.

Complex, I’d bet. He can’t be feeling that great as an adventurer on a crutch; letting machines do his job is worse.

Also, arguably, saving someone who needs help is closer to what an adventurer should do than dabbling in politics. Letting her get smacked by a mace while he stands there, I don’t think its what he wanted. Likely was hoping to chase them away, or didn’t know till the heat of the moment.

Also, Fr’Nj is cute. Never underestimate the power of cute in persuading people to do things they otherwise would not. Just ask anyone who owns, or has owned, a Bassett Hound puppy.

It took only 2-3 seconds for Fr’s hotness to kick in and make Bert discard his hoes in favor of the subhuman girl.

What exactly did you persuade someone to do? Do I even want to know?

I was persuaded to buy said puppy. It was an act of poor judgement, but when they trip over their own ears it’s very difficult not to chuckle.

There’s also the fact that deep down, he’s still loyal to Gastonia. Yes, he’s upset about how he got treated, but not enough to kill anyone over it. He just needed a wakeup call.

I think I remember Phil saying at some point that he does have at least some capacity to influence the otherwise random icons. However, this could be an hallucination caused by lack of sleep and almost enough caffeine.

Sundar: “Ya think some of you guys pokin’ in vain at the blue ball could c’mere and HELP ME???”
    Scipio: “Well, this sucks.”
Braggadocio: “Aw crap – knocked down again!”
Gravy: “Did someone get the number of the truck …”
Byron: “Damn. Two panels, and not one good shot of my face.”
E-merl: “Hey Frigg. Thought you said my Circlet was wussy. I don’t see you complainin’ now.”
Frigg: “One more comment, E-girl, and you’re gonna have a glowy, sparkly, spiky rectal probe.”
Rachel: “I’m not dead yet! I’m getting better!”
Rendar: “Hey – how do I know Byron’s name?”
Bert: “My need for hoes is just a crutch.”
Fr’Nj: “It’s nice to be hot. Gets me saved, and out of so many traffic tickets.”
Bandit: “Yesterday, full cute facial on last panel. Today, two legs and a shock of hair.”

Rendar knows Byron because he and Sundar were in a bonus story in book one.

Also, Rendar built the sword-wielding robots they guild used for training when Rachel complemented Frigg on learning so much from Scipio. The rage-face was unforgettable.

That flying loon has never seen what phospher can do to a living body, has he? Is he going to burn what he believes to be Rachel’s lifeless body? Or burn her while she is still alive?

If he believes doing either will get Byron and Gang to back off, he is loonier than Bragg’s feet smell

I think Rendar is counting on shock & awe, that they’ll run if there’s a flying contraption they can’t reach raining fiery death on them. I would also guess that Rendar is not aware of Gravy’s magical arrows or E-Merl’s increasingly accurate firebolts.
