In a time when the Industrial Revolution has become an all-out war, Mad Science rules the World...with mixed success.
If Sepia World is destroyed, then Phil (and T?) will be destroyed with it! Then, we’ll never know what happens with the other worlds.
I’m assuming the Waltrips live in our world, since they use more than just sepia and the six tube colors in their art. Maybe T and Phil communicate with them using Fringe style typewriters.
With great knowledge comes great power, with great power comes great responsibility.
“Carol, tell me how to stop it!” – “It can’t be stopped. It’s self-sustaining now.” – “THINK!!”
Meanwhile publisher J. Jonah Jameson-Bedard looks out and imagines how to spin the events so he can blame ’em all on that wall crawling wood loving elf.
So, this page really made me think of Spiderman 2.
He is seriously the most terrifying thing on that page in my opinion. Because as best as I can tell, he either is getting exactly that he wants, or is so completely dead inside that no horror can shake him.
Eh, I dunno. I can see how a rational person could reach this state of affairs.
“Well, the savage army is attacking. Can I run away from this? Nope. Can I do anything to change the outcome of this day? Haha, definitely not. Might as well sit around and wait for either the Brat King to announce victory or a mob to break down my door and haul me out for trial/lynching.”
LATER
“Holy shit, a giant purple monster is trying to eat the world! I have to… well, actually, I still can’t do anything about this. And since it seems to be eating the world, I highly doubt there’s anywhere I can run to to escape it. Might as well wait for either victory by mortalkind or eternal madness and damnation in the gut of an eldritch horror beyond the ken of sane minds.”
He doesn’t care for escape or being caught or dying. He just cares for the story.
He’s basically a more passive, more observer (but- I agree with everyone else- still terrifying) version of Heath Ledger’s Joker.
Well, if you think you are about to meet your inevitable demise, and there is a crazy shitstorm of giant monsters adn explosions and fire and crazy ass shit going on outside, what should you do? Panic? there’s nowhere to run, possibly he could hide in the basement, but then he wouldn’t know whats going on. Might as well watch the pretty destruction until it gets you. It makes perfect sense to me, but i’m feeling depressed lately….
I think the giant cultist munching thing is all of the little monsters that were throwing themselves into the tank’s reactor combined into one giant monster.
“Hi. My name is biggmac. It’s been 1 year and 32 days since my last GA update. So much has happened since then – the North Korean nuclear conflict, half of Florida gone due to sea levels, and the worldwide economic holocaust. Meeting with you guys thrice weekly is the only thing that keeps me sane. To revisit my theory of what happened when Sepia world and Gastonia merged …
this is not a time to debate responsibility and start fixing things by the most expeditious manner possible I would suggest starting with the Mozambique drill and following up with the full vampire removal system. For those curious it’s 2 to the chest and 1 to the head.
Holy F*ck. The more flameys he eats, the more he is sprouting arms and other appendages with oposable thumbs and extra eyeballs too. MF got eyes in the back of his head.
At this point, Knowledge isn’t power or responsibility, it’s insanity loss and calling of the elder god and old ones. I swear HR is summoning something Lovecraftien into this world right now.
IIRC it was the fact that the game world is another, real world in which the players occasionally control its denizens?
Oh gosh, now that sounds terrifying…
That whole thing about Arkerra being an actual physical world that H.R’s game taps into/modifies. The strange thing isn’t that they’re still active (them being actual people), the strange thing is that the players perceived them to be under their control.
Okay, I don’t love him, but I love imagining the ear-splitting cacophony of war from the first panel going almost silent in the second. Then, Bedard blows on his tea, before taking a long, amplified slurp. And then, the cacophony returns in the third panel.
Nonono. Knowledge is power. And while, with great power, there must also come great responsibility, the responsibility is to abuse that power.
heh, now thats finally a logic i can get behind. xD
Knowledge is power. Power corrupts. Study hard, be evil.
Hey, there’s 42 comments! That must mean there’s something really significant about this strip. Oh, wait, now there’s 43. Darn…
Dilbert’s Salary Theorem:
Time is Money
Knowledge is Power
Power = Work/Time
Therefore, Money = Work/Knowledge
Conclusion: the less you know, the more you make.
Geez, Shanna, calm down. It’s not the end of the world.
Well, not yours, anyway.
Probably.
Maybe…
Possibly…
Ehhhhhh…
Actually, The sepia world destruction is at least as probable as the Arkerra one.
Mehbee sepia will all turn color like that Don Knotts movie and e’rbody will live hapily ever after.
Or it’ll go like Pleasantville…
Noooo!!!
If Sepia World is destroyed, then Phil (and T?) will be destroyed with it! Then, we’ll never know what happens with the other worlds.

So, this page really made me think of Spiderman 2.
Would it matter if Carol told you, Shanna? You don’t believe in magic.
Plus you know… gun. Probably not helping.
All according to Bedard’s master plan.
I suspected he was a cultist for a while now.
He is seriously the most terrifying thing on that page in my opinion. Because as best as I can tell, he either is getting exactly that he wants, or is so completely dead inside that no horror can shake him.
I think he’s salivating over tomorrow’s headlines.
Peacekeepers Perish by Purple People Eater
A man who sits by and watches the world burns down around him, sipping his tea calmly….. Yeah, he terrified me the most on that page.
why not both? But yes, he is terrifying

“…”
“I’m thirsty.”
If I had lost all hope of escape, I might react that way, but with chocolate and ice cream.
He doesn’t care for escape or being caught or dying. He just cares for the story.

Shanna’s gonna have a field day with this in her anti-gaming blog.
Breaking: Computer Game throws two worlds into turmoil!
So I only just noticed that H.R. has been missing from these tags.
Apparently the last time we saw him was back on page 5 of this chapter.
Yeah, noticed that too.
I think the giant cultist munching thing is all of the little monsters that were throwing themselves into the tank’s reactor combined into one giant monster.
Don’t forget the bratty dictator. Add him to the mix, and you’ve got an Ungodly Taror.
…and that’s why gaining knowledge is just too much of a pita.
Yay! Auraugu found a field medic to team up with!
You can tell because he’s already lancing a boil.
And I realise it’s not just this comic I am going to miss when it ends but all the regular commenters.
*sob* I don’t want this to end.
I second that.
Very much so. Perhaps we need a Former Commenter on Guilded Age support group…
OK, so in early 2019, will we be doing this?
“Hi. My name is biggmac. It’s been 1 year and 32 days since my last GA update. Your gravatar- from what update in the comic was that?
Gravatar images aren’t all from Guilded Age.
But this one is.
SHOOT HIM.
Bad idea : this probably cause something worse than an explosion.
this is not a time to debate responsibility and start fixing things by the most expeditious manner possible I would suggest starting with the Mozambique drill and following up with the full vampire removal system. For those curious it’s 2 to the chest and 1 to the head.
Knowledge is power, guard it well.
Wellness is guarded, know it powerfully.
Guarded, know it wellness is powerfully.
France is Bacon.
So is Kevin.
Yeah, I tried to get a well to guard my knowledge, but it turned into a fount of knowledge, and spewed it everywhere.
Waitaminute waitaminute waitaminute…
Is Bedard another shell for Daedalus?
no, mr bedard is the man in the high tower sipping tea
Holy F*ck. The more flameys he eats, the more he is sprouting arms and other appendages with oposable thumbs and extra eyeballs too. MF got eyes in the back of his head.
Dis paarpel saiber-deemun is eck-streemli deinjeruss, and mei attack at enny moment… så vee must deel vitt it. *flips switch*
Vellkamm to de hydd-rollik press channel!
*SPLORTCH*
Is that glass bulletproof?
https://youtu.be/0E-ByyrW9IU
But I can see why the proper apportionment of responsibility would take priority over, y’know, actually doing something …
E-Merl is missing from the tags.
At this point, Knowledge isn’t power or responsibility, it’s insanity loss and calling of the elder god and old ones. I swear HR is summoning something Lovecraftien into this world right now.
H.R. summoning something stolen from H.P.? Shades of August Derleth!
Only Auraugu would be badass enough to put an extradimensional monster in an armlock.
Hyes!
So how is Scipio and other such characters active if their players are offline?
IIRC it was the fact that the game world is another, real world in which the players occasionally control its denizens?
Oh gosh, now that sounds terrifying…
That whole thing about Arkerra being an actual physical world that H.R’s game taps into/modifies. The strange thing isn’t that they’re still active (them being actual people), the strange thing is that the players perceived them to be under their control.
Some people just want to watch the world burn.
#BedardFreaksMeOut
I love Bedard, in that panel.
Okay, I don’t love him, but I love imagining the ear-splitting cacophony of war from the first panel going almost silent in the second. Then, Bedard blows on his tea, before taking a long, amplified slurp. And then, the cacophony returns in the third panel.
