Aw c’mon Frigg! Gratitude is a bit much perhaps, but you could at least reduce them to only quarter-sucking!

      Gratitude?

      You don’t understand, do you?
You only do a favour for a Chaotic Neutral if they requested it (or sometimes if you owe them)… THEN they’ll thank you.
Try doing a favour for a Chaotic Neutral unbidden… and it will be treated like you’re trying to collar them… and nothing will make a C/N hate you quite so much as trying to collar them, so to speak.

Normally I’d disagree, but Frig torched the Number One Nun; and pillaging is, by requirement, accompanied by FIRE.

You know, I do see Frigg’s point. Syr’nj is apologizing for a drunken insult, when right now her biggest concern as a healer should be the fact that her patient is beaten, fatigued, and probably dehydrated/malnourished. Besides, I’m sure Frigg’s been called worse than ‘knothole’. She’s definitely called people worse things XD.

Certainly she’s even more bad tempered when injured than she is when kicking ass.

Interesting to see what the rest of the group does now. If I had a player reacting that way, there’d be a “therapy session” as the player explained (again) the difference between roleplay and actually being pissed at the other players. Most of the time my players don’t bother with this kind of outburst even though at least one of the characters would react just this way!!

Since we’re talking about the differences between looting and theft, I’d like to say that I’ve always had trouble reconciling myself with paladins looting. Am I alone here?

Well if $DEITY didn’t want you to have the wealth, they wouldn’t have helped you kill the creature and/or they’d stop you from looting, right?

Also, since the guy died it’s not theft since no one owns it anymore. It might be graverobbing, but that’s probably not so bad in their world?

It’s only grave robbing if there’s a grave involved. Taking loot off a dead but not buried body = Fair game. That’s even how it was in real life Medieval Times (not the attraction) You’d always get the local peasants picking over the fallen warriors after a battle for trinkets to pay for their next meal beside the ravens pecking the corpses for the best meat.

Its not theft because it’s spoils of battle. Spoils of battle aren’t theft.

            “Spoils of battle aren’t theft.”
Of course, they are. I mean, when you pick up, say, a beret, or any other item from captured enemy troops, it’s not like you ask them to sell it to you or something like that.
Not to mention when a city is taken over by the army you fight in, breaking into civilians’ houses and taking stuffs like silverware isn’t spoil of battle either, but plain theft.

That’s just my opinion, though. I’d like to know what the military laws say about this.

Theft implies ownership. You can’t steal something no one can lay claim to. If possession is nine-tenths of the law, then a corpse has no legal right to anything let alone an empty suit of enchanted armor.

That thing you smited was evil. It did not deserve those gains, which, even if not ill-gotten, were certainly undeserved.

Putting it in the hands of the righetous is only necessary. Not only did your god give it to you, but it NEEDS to be used/spent. Now it has serviced the cause of good!

Leaving it there would have risked letting it idle (A sin in itself) or letting it be used for neutral or evil purposes. By taking it, you know what it furthers.

Most Paladin Orders include a vow to tithe. Technically, the paladin is collecting spoils, wealth, equipment, and items so that the order and by default the religious body can propagate its agenda. The paladin keeps only enough to live on and upgrade equipment as needed. The rest goes to the “church”. So looting the bodies is actually a part of her job. Good thing there isn’t a paladin in the party or Byron and the Bandit might have some competition.

I once had a player in a game I was GMing ask me the same thing. I told him to go ahead and try it it, if your deity is unhappy with what you’re doing you’ll find out kinda quick.

Well if we were to take Christianity as an example (since it is the de facto religion upon which any Paladin type class is based) I think very few deities would take offense to looting the dead. There are only a few isolated cases in the Old Testament where people were punished for looting, but in all those cases those people had been given explicit directions NOT to take anything.

Couple this with the fact that the Bible mentions money and prosperity in some 700 instances throughout the text and I’d say that God thinks money is kinda important.

I said it months ago, and I’ll say it again now: Byron is a great character, but he’s one lousy excuse for a berserker.

I don’t want to hurt the creative team’s feelings. Really. This is one of my favorite webcomics and has been since it was less than a month old.
