Wow, these nuns sure are devoted. If you took a snapshot of my thoughts while standing watch in the middle of the night they probably would be about something irrelevant like food, or rocks, or sex

Coming to think about it, that probably explains why I’m not a nun.

          I’m not a nun because I got man-parts…

… also I’m a Nihilist, but that probably doesn’t matter (at least if you go by Nietzsche’s definition).

Now just to be fair, these nuns did an excellent job. Many people in clergy are all to happy to help misguided people overcome challenges.

That nun needs some more time in nun school. You’re not a heathen if you worship a deity. A heathen is someone that worship’s no god.

If you worship a false god you’re likely an idolater, and if you worship a real god that’s the wrong one, you’re an infidel.

While I’m at it, if you speak in an insulting fashion about your god, youre a blasphemer, if you act against the commandments of your religion, you’re a heretic, and if you act against the doctrine of your specific church, youre a heterodox.

Just thought I’d clear that up.

Actually, a heathen is someone who doesn’t believe in a Judeo-Christian god. Someone that worships no god is an atheist.

I suspect that “heathen” meaning “anyone who does not worship a Judeo-Christian God” is a fairly recent development, and that ahdok’s definition is the more archaic usage (i.e., the version likely to be used by a medieval religious organization). Incidentally, I’d say that a more accurate description of “infidel” would be “one who has rejected the true God for something else” – aka “apostate”. in – fidel, in meaning not, fidel meaning loyalty = infidel meaning lack of loyalty. A similar construction gives us “infidelity”.

Actually, heathen comes from old english. It means you’re not a follower of the Bible. There’s argument over the etymology of the word, but it’s meaning is fairly clear. In any dictionary it’ll have that as the first definition and then something like “uncivilized” in the second.

P.S. It also works for Muslims since their religion is a spin off of Christianity the way Christianity spun off from Judaism.

I think, perhaps, despite its historic use, heathen has come to mean more than just a non-follower of Christianity and now means a non-follower of any specified religion or a pagan.
The English language is constantly being molded and changed by those who use it. As the generations of speakers come and go, certain words are pruned and new words sprout. Syntax changes; Lexicon evolves. A word’s meaning may change while its intent remains.

Perhaps an equivalent of non-Christian is paynim?
(These are just opinions btw. This is totally up for debate. Maybe I’m wrong?)

I still wonder how long it will take me to be fed up with this… On one hand it is justifiable to a certain degree. On an other hand, it sure gets old to be told constantly “we firmly believe you are an idiot and this is the vague and general idea we have of your world-view that by chance has nothing to do with reality, but we still roll with it ’cause making others look idjots iz funz.”
