Chapter 12 – Page 20
Guilded Age is looking for guest strips! Have we said that already? I feel like we have. Oh well. A helpful reminder never hurt nobody. More information here.

I see… subtext… in panel 1.
That’s not subtext, that’s a cigar.
Best training scene ever. Everybody’s faces are hilarious, I love the ignited arrow, and Byron’s look is very intriguing. Is he made sad by the way everyone else glories in the fighting? I think so.
The arrow lighting reminds me of Robert Aspirin’s Myth Adventures. The one where Skeeve, Aahz, and Tananda grab a few mercenaries and fight off an army.
i absolutly loved the Myth books or at least the early ones. Later it got more and more modern and wasn’t so good anymore.
But the one you mean is clearly one of my favorites.
The later ones were… Okay? But the character development was taking a bit of the fun out of the series. On one hand, I liked Aahz as Skeeve’s mentor. But Skeeve had to grow up and do his own thing, and it’s only natural that he became a bit of a douche when you’ve got a Pervert for a father figure.
…Pervect, excuse me.
Aspirin just got to the point where he couldn’t write any more and had to take a break. He released a book to try to get back into the mood, but it was absolutely terrible. Then he started teaming up with another author who apparently continues to write the series after his death, but I haven’t picked them up to see how good they are. They do bring Skeeve and co. back to a low-tech world, though.
While I agree that the early books were much less complicated and not as bogged down by politics, I’ve found all of the books to be quite enjoyable.
The biggest issue with Jody Lynn Nye coming in seems to be that you have more 3rd person narration, where everything before that had been entirely told from first person perspective of either Aahz or Skeeve, and occasionally by Guido, Chumly, Gleep, and I think maybe Vic or Massha. With the 3rd person perspective you lose a bit of the personal connection that you get from 1st person narration, and you have to make more of an effort to sympathize with clueless characters, due to the omnipotence you get from the 3rd person perspective and being able to see things the main characters can’t.
The arrow lighting made me think of Crono Trigger and dual techs.
And now I’m going to play that.
Yeah, exactly!
Bandit, how we missed you :D
Love the first panel.
something tells me Byron feels a bit left out.
I like the way she’s making the machine sweat in panel 2.
I believe he is thinking on how somehow this “training” will not prepare them for the horrors of war, and that some of them will not survive.
My money’s on “Welcome to Corneria!”
I like swords!
Welcome to Corneria!
Urge to destroy world rising.
Looks more like “I like swords. Dammit, why don’t I get to use my axes against them?” to me.
“It is my duty to keep you alive. For many of you, I will fail.”
He’s not even allowed to try to keep them alive. That’s his problem. http://guildedage.net/webcomic/chapter-12/chapter-12-page-9/
Go Go Bandit Dagger!
You tiny, running, Bandit dagg-eeeeeer.
Dagger dagger dagger dagger dagger dagger
Argh! Snake a snake! Snaaake! A snaaaake, oooh its a snake! Its a
Dagger dagger dagger dagger dagger dagger
I think Byron is thinking: “Why am I not out there?”
Syr’nj, you better get going on solving his issues.
Either that or he’s the one footing the bill for the training drones. :D
Yeah, it’s ether “they don’t need a danger like me” or “there goes my robot army.”
C’mon, Byron. Run some laps or something. You’re not THAT left out. Just need to train differently, is all.
…and when they go into battle, they have him do what? Run away? It really sucks when your a Berserker is not allowed to fight, let alone not trusted by your team mates.
Running still builds endurance, speed, and leg strength, especially if he does it in armor like he’s wearing. Yeah, it won’t do much for his upper body, but he can still last a bit longer in a fight.
There’s always pushups, weighted weapon drills, maybe get in some underwater strength training. I’m sure they got a pool. They got everything else. Hell, go meditate and work on that rage problem.
I see Byron…checking out Bandit..just cause
The faces are great. I really love that the automaton chasing Bandit in panel 2 looks frustrated (notice the sweat!)
I noticed that too. Loved it
Panel 2 feels like when a song and dance routine would break out >.> who’s with me!?!
*Sigh* Times are tough
First thing I thought of, too. I miss that series.
He got the chance to do Venture Brothers. I can’t blame him.
First thing I thought of. I wonder if it was intentional…
Psssh. Of course it was intentional. What do you take the creators for?
Glad I wasn’t the only one thinking about that XD
I’m glad people still remember that comic. Damn shame it stopped at such a huge event. It makes me smile that it still lives on in the memories of those, like me, who loved it.

Always fade out in a montage… MONTAGE…..
If you fade out…
It seem like more time has passed in a montage…
(Montage!)
Wait… wait…
Is that seriously an RPG World reference in the alt text?
http://rpgworldcomic.com/d/20001021.html
Wow. That brings back some memories.
No kidding! I loved that line! Thanks for the link, I’d forgotten the name of that comic. :)
Anyone notice how Rachel had no arms to break off… but her movements were exactly the same? idol worship in full effect
ugh, nevermind, i see scip’s off the edge of the screen >.<
I like how, in panel two, all the fighters are striking in unison.
Also in panel one. It’s a parry drill. Don’t know why part of the drill involves looking the other way in panel 1, but whatever.
Rachel’s making gooey eyes at…um, Frigg.
Rachel is admiring her hero, Frigg. Frigg is trying to outdo Scorpio. Scopio is just doing his thing. I do like that they share almost the same moves.
Sadzerker. :(
Byron the Boohoo’er is Boohoo’ing
*East bound and down, loaded up and truckin, We’re gonna do what they say can’t be done. We gotta long way to go, and a short time to get there, we’re eastbound just watch ‘ol Bandit ruuuun!*
Poor Byron wants to get in on the team-fight.
Wait…are these random avatars linked to one’s email? I crossed an ocean and changed computers since last commenting, thus the surprise at seeing “Dour Barmaid”.
Yes. It shows even for your old comments. For example, just below: http://guildedage.net/webcomic/chapter-9/chapter-9-page-16/#comment-18006.
If you want to change it, go to http://en.gravatar.com/. What ever you assign there will apply anywhere that uses gravatars.
Yep. It’s psychic.
I actually think it’s kinda creepy if I start commenting on a wordpress blog somewhere else, because I forget it tracks between them :)
Mwhahahaha!
Also because I don’t want to spam, great comic!
This scene looks so lovely, yet so sad. They seem happy, I wonder how many of them will survive the real battle. Guess is easier to smile for now.
Man, this is a great page. The first panels are so happy-go-lucky…then blam, Sad Byron makes the whole page kind of wistful.
Good job on the art and the pacing on this, it’s really wonderful!
Love E-Merl’s thumbs up in panel three. also, love how Bandit’s last name is Keynes, am I right in thinking it’s a Dune reference?
Thought it was a reference to economic theory …
The are rapidly rending Rendar the Renderer’s rehearsal ravagers.
I hope he made plenty of spares. :-?
Awww, poor Byron.
Don’t worry, Byron. The next time you kill Bandit, I’m sure it will stick. At least they all bought the “Berserker” story you fed them. They have no idea of your dark ambitions…
Byron, the TRUE villain of the series.
(That twist would likely cause people to break their computers if it happened. XD)
Well, his name would make better sense anyway.
Considering the circumstances back then, it would utterly cement him as Stupid Evil, though.
I now read this comic for Scipio.
This makes Frigg jelly.
Panel 1: Frigg – “That blankety-blank-blank show off is trying to steal Gravedust from my team! I am so going to smash his face in.”
Panel 2: “Stretch, two, three, four! Swing, two, three, four! Disarm, two, three, four!”
Panel 3: “Dash, swing, looks like you’ve got flat wheels, metal-head!”
Panel 4: “I have to foot the bill for all of these dumb practice drones and I don’t even get to bash any of them. So unfair.”
The Loneliest Berserker.
Well, you folks have had your fun with these rogerrogers. Now we’ll send in the terminators.
syncronised disemboweling, somehow I suspect it won’t work on the revolutionaries
Bandit, are you tired? Because you’ve been running through my dreams all night long. Then you hamstrung me and took my hat and wallet…and my heart.
Gold Star.
Cherish it forev… too late she got it already.
That last panel is tremendous. Byron is almost Kilroy. I would have been tempted to break the gutter to have his nose overlap the bottom border.
Holy crap I just realized something – Bandit just sneak attacked a construct.
Best. Rogue. Ever.
That limitation never really made any sense for mechanical constructs.
Maybe she runs on first edition Backstab rules?
Maybe Bandit uses a Pathfinder build?
I think it was supposed to be because sneak attack represents being able to hit soft targets on an enemy. Or at least that was the justification. My group just used it to stop the overpowered rogues.
I think she actually hamstrung him.
*it
I wonder if the drunk man who first came with the idea of robotic fighters is now rich?
With “Shame about his brother” I expect he got locked up for turning over kids to pirates.
Not only is sad Berserker sad, he’s also watching Bandit do the Exact thing she did to Harki… also probably the last thing Byron remembers before he reded out…
No-one knows what it’s like to be the sad man, to be the bad man…
Behind brown eyes!
Aww poor pyron he looks like someone stole his bike.
PIE-RON, LORD OF CUSTARDY DELIGHTS, USURPER OF FLAKY CRUSTED REALMS AND KEEPER OF THE SACRED FILLING.
Perfect avatar.
byron
So, I’m a bit late for Q&A but I have something I just HAVE to ask.
Byron’s berserking and killing friends n’ stuff, is it a feature of the barbarian class as defined by the game, or is it a bug?
Also, cool, I got Tombdirt as an avatar.
I know I’m a bit late here, but I hafta say I love the RPGWorld reference.
Alt Text: YES :3
