Ronnie
A depressed, portly, hirsute anime fan stumbles through life in the ever-pursuit of chicken nuggets and other life-shortening indulgences.
Well, lumber has been trying to get at the elven forests for generations, so, life long dream about to be achieved…? And Agro has been beaten to $#it by the invading army, so new troops are good. The four military guys are aware that the only unit that hasn’t yet failed (nevermind repeatedly and completely botched their missions – army, field marshal), is led by this little…non-human…lady…which would irk any bigoted misogynist, even without her being rubbed in their faces by giving her a council seat.
I think Miyamoto’s the only one of them that’s upset. Annunziata looks like a pretty standard soldier, Jarvis looks bored, and Ardaic looks to be lost in thought.
Actually Annunziata probably IS upset seeing as midway through Syr’s little speech, someone (Persson?) implied he hasn’t been doing anything for the war effort.
Hooray, somebody recognized my gravatar! (I really, really like that game…though I haven’t played it in a while…trying to mostly forget most of it before giving it another go, and try to romance Donald. >_>)
Donald is such a conflicted cutey. I always liked Ellen’s romance storyline, myself…Hope they get the next in the series knocked out in the next two years…
I <3 Ellen. She’s my default romance, and I always go for her if I’m primarily pursuing a non-romance goal. (Donald’s the only proper romance path I haven’t done, yet – although haven’t been able to get the Big Steve partial romance, yet, and dodged the Grabby wedding. Though I did get a kiss from Pastel!)
And, yeah, I can’t wait for Wolf Hall to finally see the light of day. I’d also like to see an expansion for Horse Hall to allow you to romance all the characters.
And I think people may be looking at us funny. >_>
You might also add Municipal Police Forces. In other words, Syr’Nj’s situation isn’t FUBAR, but with bastards as Miyamoto, Iwatani, Bedard and possibly admiral Annunziata and – I sure as hell hope not – grand marshall Jarvis, I think it’s already SNAFU.
Pardo, Iwatani, and Miyamoto are all dukes. Presson is a guildmaster (obviously). Annunziata, Javis, and Ardaic all have military titles, Reynolds is the dean of the gnomish academy (forgot name), and Bedard has no formal title (thus mister).
I’m not questioning why they have a different title than the others present, I’m questioning why they have a different title than they had before.
Their Graces Pardo, Iwatani, and Miyamoto were previously referred to as Don Pardo, Don Iwatani, and Don Miyamoto. Now they’re being consistently referred to as His Grace, or simply Grace. (Don Pardo, Don Iwatani, and Don Miyamoto are all names of real people, thus my comment about Don being replaced with Grace being a prelude to bringing in House Slick.)
Great composition on this page. In a text format this would fill anywhere from 2-3 pages. Syr’nj and her scribe entering the concil hall. Noting all the councillors present and their demeanors.
Syr’nj walks to the speakers well and does what she does best. Try to bring conflicting factions together for the greater good.
Now there’s a leader worth following!
Yes, that’s what strike me most about this page : Syr’nj looks like the strong monarch addressing its – admittedly powerful – council. Wonder how many of the councilors are picking up on that vibe given their prejudices … and how many are already planning their own pseudo-regicide as soon as they can get away with it.
Answer me this: Is Iwatani a distortion of Iwata, as in the CEO of Nintendo? Pardo is from Blizzard, and Miyamoto and Persson are pretty self-explanatory. Care to rattle off where the rest come from, or do I have to use my Google-fu?
Ed Annunziata – Ecco the Dolphin (hence, navy)
Jon Van Caneghem – Might and Magic (hence, magick)
Brian Reynolds – Zynga/IGDA
Renaud Bedard – Capybara Games/Fez (hence, press; look at all of it surrounding Fez)
Rob Pardo – World of Warcraft (a clear influence on the series)
Markus Persson – Minecraft (hence mining)
Shigeru Miyamoto – Mario (hence municipal services)
Eugene Jarvis – Defender (Arcade title) (hence defense)
Toru Iwatani – Pac-Man (how does agriculture fit here?)
The only one I can’t figure out is Ardaic, but everyone else is pretty clearly drawing from video game developers.
I don’t think I really like the new format either. It doesn’t really have that seamless, single-document look that the previous version did, and while the comments always were a bit to the left of the comic image, this makes it stand out more as disjointed looking. (Might be an effect of NoScript, though.)
Oh, I should also say that I’m digging the new banner, it’s so awesome – however, I tend to run adblocker (as I hate animations in my webpages) – and it does horrible things to the new layout.
I, for one, refuse to take responsibility if the site doesn’t look right if you’re blocking the ads (y’know, the things we make money with so we can make comics so you can read them for free?).
In all seriousness: I’m not going to entertain complaints about site malfunctions if you’re viewing it through a modded browser. We will only ever make the site to work in a fashion that is compatible with the majority of the viewing audience… which is to say, using the browser in its vanilla form.
It’s like walking into a bar with sunglasses on and complaining that you can’t see well.
Probably way, way too late to be seen or read, but I do like the site design that came up after the one we were talking about here.
Also, thank you for using an ad provider that doesn’t require Javascript to see. I often feel guilty about NoScript’s incidental ad-blocking for harming the sites I care about, but unethical ad companies are frequently the exact sort of adversary that I put NoScript on my system to shut down in the first place. It’s good not to have to risk my security to support the people I like.
Just kidding =P It’ll take some getting used to but it looks pretty nice. Not as… argh, why isn’t there a good word for “stilren” in English? Simple? Clean? But I kind of like it anyway.
However the flag on the title banner on top looks weird, in fact the entire banner does. Like screen tearing or something.
I was just looking over the names and after a few moments of checking, when the names were said to be having some meaning, I found the following, because some of the names were familiar like Miyamoto and Persson:
Each is somehow famous in a ‘nerd’ field, most in programming or gaming of some sort. Bedard is a stretch, and I couldn’t find anything for Ardaic (though once I couldn’t, part of me thought about HARDAC, the computer from Batman)
Iwatani: Pacman
Perrson: Minecraft
Caneghem: Might and Magic
Annunziata: Ecco the Dolphin
Pardo: WoW
Jarvis: Defender/Robotron
Reynolds: Various Civ type games
Miyamoto: Nintendo (Municipal Services, Mario is a plumber for example)
Bedard: Comic Book Writer
Ardaic: ?
It was what I had found and thought about adding it when I saw the WoW character, but figured I’d leave that one out. Good to know I was on the right path.
Iwatani: stereotyped mexican exclamation about pretty body parts (ai! what a knee!)
Perrson: what a cat calls a person they like
Caneghem: a polite cough informing a gentleman that he has accidentally forgotten to collect his cane from the umbrella stand,
Annunziata: famous engrish exclamation and running joke from an anime about finishing schools. (Annunciate!)
Pardo: Cheape knock-off fake of a popular dice game
Jarvis: Common name for Cocker Spaniels
Reynolds: A dimensionless number that estimates of the ratio of inertial forces to viscous forces and therefore indicates the relative importance of these two forces for some systems of flow.
Miyamoto: What the Italian gentleman who owns the UK motorway services firm “moto” calls his company.
Bedard: Brother of famous Eastenders acting dog.
Ardaic: A particularly strong form of steady pain.
Well, I feel like an idiot- the only one I had was Don Pardo, the announcer for most game shows through the 70’s (look up “Thank you, Don Pardo!”) and the original man who spoke the words, “Live, from New York, it’s Saturday Night!”
Oh god, name overload.
Now I have to go back and retroactively tag them all…ARCHIVE BINGE!
Brooding Ardaic is brooding.
… a couple of these guys are way too happy.
Pardo: I GOTS ME SUM NEW LUMBEEEEERRRR!
Reynolds: Oh thank Cog, a friendly elf. Finally lunch at the Council cafeteria won’t be so soul-shattering.
Not sure you are counting Iwatani, but just in case.
Iwatani: That’s it girl, play right into my hands.
Honestly, I get the idea that Iwatani legitimately likes her.
Doesn’t mean he won’t stab her in the back the second he believes that is the course of action to gain him the most benefit.
(Hopes this post is not remembered if proven horribly wrong)
But he’d fell slightly slightlyyyy bad about it after. Probably skip dessert next meal cause he’s just not feeling it.
Pardo’s sitting there with some lumber, alright. This council was a sausage party until Syr’nj showed up.
Archmage Caneghem (eyebrow #1): Is that country girl still this naive!?
Archmage Caneghem (eyebrow #2): Nooo she isn’t. So what’s her game?
Well, lumber has been trying to get at the elven forests for generations, so, life long dream about to be achieved…? And Agro has been beaten to $#it by the invading army, so new troops are good. The four military guys are aware that the only unit that hasn’t yet failed (nevermind repeatedly and completely botched their missions – army, field marshal), is led by this little…non-human…lady…which would irk any bigoted misogynist, even without her being rubbed in their faces by giving her a council seat.
We’re looking at YOU Jarvis
Miyamoto is municipal services?
So…lawyers, taxes, labor unions and such?
Also, upset council members, you are on the bottom because you are so upset. Deal with it.
I think the Municipal Services thing is a reference to plumbing.
First – yay Magical Diary! You may be right, Jarvis may be tired of all the speechifying…

Argh…HTML fail ate my post…

Previous message to Tsapki.
I think that SNAFU is probably a safe assumption…
Yup.
Guildmaster Persson! Of the Mining guild! It’s perfect! Oh Minecraft, you have devoured so many hours of my life.
I’m wondering why all of the heads of houses are now being referred to as His Grace, rather than Don.
Planning to add a House Slick, maybe?
Pardo, Iwatani, and Miyamoto are all dukes. Presson is a guildmaster (obviously). Annunziata, Javis, and Ardaic all have military titles, Reynolds is the dean of the gnomish academy (forgot name), and Bedard has no formal title (thus mister).

(Don Pardo, Don Iwatani, and Don Miyamoto are all names of real people, thus my comment about Don being replaced with Grace being a prelude to bringing in House Slick.)
Any one else misread Pardo as Lardo on the first pass?
No? Just me?
OK.
Also, I think he likes her outfit. All wood products…
Quite sorry, cannot find where they are referred to as such. Who called them that? In an informal setting, I can see Don being appropriate.
Yeah, this one’s a new one on me as well.
The only Don we have is Gobligno. Sorry if you’re confused.
I must have walked in from an alternate universe or something…
Ahh yes… there’s few things more satisfying than artfully calling out the screw-ups, and blockheads in a meeting.
Iwatani looks waaay too amused…
(Bets on who goes into a frothing rant and storms out of the meeting first…?)
All my bits, all my internets on Miyamoto.
I think Miyamoto need to drink a little less coffee.
C’mon, fellas … are you going to sit around and take that from an elf? A FEMALE elf?
Ray, a drop of golden sun?
Me, a name I call myself.
Great composition on this page. In a text format this would fill anywhere from 2-3 pages. Syr’nj and her scribe entering the concil hall. Noting all the councillors present and their demeanors.

Merriam-Webster:
I think they meant the modern slang meaning, but it’s interesting to think that maybe they didn’t.
Teach me how to bougie, teach teach me how to bougie.
Actually… don’t.
The burly gentlemen with the rubber gloves will be ringing your door shortly.
I’m a burly gentleman with rubber gloves.
… This is gonna get hairy.
Literally and figuratively.
*snerk!*
Also, right before I lettered this page I was watching Lincoln.
Felt good, man.
RHETORIC! 1-Luv.
Be honest. Guildmaster Persson. You couldn’t think of a name, could you?
Not that I’m complaining. Got a laugh out of it.
All of our names are deliberate, I’ve gotta say.
Answer me this: Is Iwatani a distortion of Iwata, as in the CEO of Nintendo? Pardo is from Blizzard, and Miyamoto and Persson are pretty self-explanatory. Care to rattle off where the rest come from, or do I have to use my Google-fu?

Man, for politicians, these guys have AWFUL poker faces.
Iwatani’s smuggeriffic face makes me want to giggle, though.
I LOVE Dean Reynolds expression! It’s excited without being to creepy.
I, too, have an August body.
Maybe more a November. After thanksgiving dinner.
Hah!
Jarvis, eh? New boy on the block (never been tagged before anyway). What do we know about him? *rubs chin pensively like Ardaic*
OH AND ALSO are they implying that Harky got away? Graiya didn’t get his ugly ass? INTERESTING
AHH WHAT THE HELL DIFFERENT FORMAT CHANGE SCARY.
NO! NOT THE GRAVATAR! ANYTHING BUT THAT! COME BACK TO ME
Oh, there we are. Ooh, an Avian!
I don’t think I really like the new format either. It doesn’t really have that seamless, single-document look that the previous version did, and while the comments always were a bit to the left of the comic image, this makes it stand out more as disjointed looking. (Might be an effect of NoScript, though.)
I think it’s actually that shape, although I also use various things to mess around with page layouts. (I’m not doing noscript though)
Oh, I should also say that I’m digging the new banner, it’s so awesome – however, I tend to run adblocker (as I hate animations in my webpages) – and it does horrible things to the new layout.
Well, don’t run adblocker, I guess.

Oh no, I’m not complaining, just letting you know about it. (Like, everyone I know uses adblock, so it might be affecting a lot of your userbase.)

AAAAH CHANGE! CHANGE BAD, CHANGE FRIGHTENS ME!! D=
Just kidding =P It’ll take some getting used to but it looks pretty nice. Not as… argh, why isn’t there a good word for “stilren” in English? Simple? Clean? But I kind of like it anyway.

Never mind, reloading the page fixed the banner issue!
Sooo … let’s how it sounds :
Caneghem : Dutch or Belgian-flemish
Iwatani and Miyamoto : obviously, Japanese
Pardo : A lumberjack … hmm … Canadian.
Annunziata : Italian. From Sicily or Calabria. Other than that, destination unknown.
Bedard : French. Or French speaking Swiss.
Persson : Norwegian.
Reynolds : British (English)
Jarvis : American, from British (English) descent.
Ardaic : American too, but from (northern) German and (or) Danish descent.
Were those the inspirations for the characters’ names, Phil ?
“let’s how it sounds” : Let’s hear how it sounds.
I am Belgian and archmage Caneghem is one of my absolute favorite characters.
YOU my friend, have just made my day.
HUZZAH FOR THE BELGIAN ELF WIZARDS!!!!

Pardo: WoW
Jarvis: Defender/Robotron
Reynolds: Various Civ type games
Miyamoto: Nintendo (Municipal Services, Mario is a plumber for example)
Bedard: Comic Book Writer
Ardaic: ?
Everyone give this reader a round of applause for solving such a riddle.
The reason you can’t find anything for Ardaic is because he’s not a Head of House, so he’s not named after a “Nerd Figure of Note.”
He’s simply named after one of the better friends, and rap battle partner, that I had during my time playing WoW.
It was what I had found and thought about adding it when I saw the WoW character, but figured I’d leave that one out. Good to know I was on the right path.
Ah… I had the following:
Iwatani: stereotyped mexican exclamation about pretty body parts (ai! what a knee!)

Caneghem: a polite cough informing a gentleman that he has accidentally forgotten to collect his cane from the umbrella stand,
Annunziata: famous engrish exclamation and running joke from an anime about finishing schools. (Annunciate!)

LOLLLL
Hahah Guildmaster Persson! Where is his hat?
